I'd say Vampire Lord was actually pretty good early on. It was even good enough to be Limited for over a year back in 2004.

I suspect Vampire Genesis is supposed to be an homage to Dracula's second form in Castlevania, since both Yu Gi Oh and Castlevania are made by Konami.

More proof that Spirit of the Pharaoh is bad: In the GX anime, there's a one-off villain who plays a Spirit of the Pharaoh deck. The fact that he runs that bad card is then used as evidence by the other characters that he's a terrible duelist, and his 100% win record is just an artifact of his servants always throwing games.

Fushioh Ritchie can be cheated with a wild monster appears and save himself by flipping himself down.

Kind of wished they retrained Fushioh Richie since it was a pretty interesting card. Especially in terms of lore of a sorcerer killing others in order to become a undead lich from the looks of it.

Spirit of the Pharaoh, is super bad. But I think it's important to remember that it was legitimately made as a joke card. In the anime the guy who uses it was royalty, and he "never lost a duel" until he played against Jaden, and he thought he was the best, but only because his servants would just intentionally lose in order to make him feel better about himself, while Jaden just treats him as another opponent instead of Royalty. It's just a card in service to be a lesson about honesty. Though it is just like, the worst thing ever and loses him the game like the second after it's summoned.

Fushioh Richie CAN be cheated out via "A Wild Monster Appears!" All you have to do is flip it face down via its effect and it won't be shuffled back into the deck.

I can sort of see Spirit Of The Pharaoh having some play for the sole purpose of summoning Obelisk and using his effect.

Immortal Ruler is one of those cards that blew my mind the first time I saw it due to how bad it was. They should have made the effect something like this: "If a Zombie World you control would be destroyed by a card effect, send this card from your hand or your side field to the graveyard to prevent its destruction. If this card and Zombie World are both in your graveyard, banish this card to add Zombie World to your hand." There! You still recycle Zombie World but you don't need to waste your normal summon to do so, meshes with the playstyle of the deck that would use it, and even if it still had the special summon restriction, I could see myself giving it a chance in the World Championship and Tag Force games. Nowhere near competitive, I know. I've never played competitive Yugioh anyways. If there's something wrong with the wording (I would be surprised if there isn't), don't pay too much attention to it. English is not my native language and I haven't played physical Yugioh since the early GX days, so I'm used to the simulators dealing with all the complicated ruling stuff for me.

I wish they would make something like a “Vampire Genesis Reborn”. Just as an example. They could rework his effect to make him meta like doomking balerdroc is. Maybe allow you to banish zombies to summon him like a chaos zombie boss monster and then allow you to summon from hand or grave like a red eyes darkness metal for zombies.

That Skelgon was useful in Forbidden Memories (PS1) since it was considered a dragon. You could use it for Twin Headed Thunder Dragon fusion.

Whoa, Blackland Fire Dragon might be THE most generic-looking dragon in the entire game.

On Vampire Genesis defense, as far as I know, the structure deck also included a lvl 8 zombie that revives itself upon being discarded. As unlikely as it is to have both on hand at the same time while vampire lord is on the field, konami actually made sure that it could somehow work.

I actually own a good chunk of these cards (my favorites being Immortal Ruler, Revived King Ha Des, Il Blud, and Vampire Lord), mostly because I'm a HUGE fan of collecting cards with bad ass artwork, no matter how bad they are. Zombies, Fairies, and Fiends tended to always be my go-to collectors just for being amazing with art, and tragically wasted on bad card effects (like The Ghost Tricks).

Another reason Vampire Genesis is so bad is that, at the time it came out, Vampire Lord was one of the best level 5-6 monsters in the game. Weaker attack than Jinzo or Summoned Skull, but a revival effect that was ABSURDLY strong for when it came out, and an incredibly good effect when it dealt battle damage, back when the graveyard wasn't really a resource. So you were trading a really, REALLY good Zombie monster for... something other cards did better. In fact, there was a better Zombie revival card, Book of Life, released IN THE SAME STRUCTURE DECK.

Hey! Vampire Lord was my signature card during Middle School! Sure it helped that I basically knew my opponents decks and could just snipe stuff with his ability but that's besides the point.

a little fact of return Zombie: that card was made during the era of Yata-Garasu Locks, when Konami was experimenting how to counter their own broken cards. unfortunately the card despite having a better stats than Sinister Serpent, that monster was not really good in their job aswell.

The other thing Great Mammoth of Goldfine has over Skelgon, is the fact that the former's materials are both zombie types, wich is more consistent in a zombie themed deck (except if you play Zombie World so that Blackland Fire Dragon becomes a Normal Level 4 Zombie, which is better than a Level 3 Zombie Dragon I guess...)

As a hard Zombie Main, I love plenty of Cards on this list. Pain Painter is my boy, Vampire Genesis was always so fun to use, and I will forever love Dokurorider and demand a Retrain of him (and Genesis).

I'd love to see a retrain of the pharaoh archetype. It's a cool concept, swarming the field with low level zombies but there needs to be better synergy, maybe a fusion or a xyz summon that binds it all together

So you can guess what we called him, for a couple months at least. Haha. (That's why these cards are two of my favorites. Not too, but def close up there.)

The thing about return zombie. Theoretical, you could draw a quick spell, what you could activate during the standby phase, so you would have no cards in your hand and it is still standby phase, so you can add Return Zombie back to your hand.

The RESULT of the effect of Spirit of the Pharao is actually really good in modern Yugioh. The card "Superancient Deepsea King Coelecanth" allows you to summon 4 normal level 4 or lower fish monsters from your deck, which can then be used for Link/Xyz summons. Of course, the effect gets the cards *from your deck* instead of the graveyard, and the card is just a regular 2-sacrifice monster. 4 Level 4 monsters are already not bad, but with modern extra deck monsters, that's a pretty insane effect. Still though, even if it got 4 zombies from your deck, I doubt anyone would play it even in rogue decks with that insane summoning requirement. The least thing they could have done is have the sarcophagi have half-decent effects and all be spell cards so you can play then from your hand and they're not dead cards. I love the idea behind Spirit of the Pharao, but the execution is so terrible I don't even want to play it, and I'm biased in favor of it.

Skelgon and Great Mammoth of Goldfine both require Snake Hair and other "dragon" as materials to summon. But can anyone explain why the heck a "medusa kind of" thing fuse with a "zombie dragon" become a "mammoth skeleton" thing? That makes no sense! Man, fusion in the old school days is weird...

These cards were so much fun... back when they first came out! Most cards from 90's and 2000's are awful these days... and I still run spirit of the pharaoh 😋 haha

I can guarantee that Reborn Zombie and Return Zombie aren't anime cards. They appeared in one or two episodes, but they never used their effects. The funniest thing about Return Zombie is that it was a Secret Rare in the TCG initially.

To add onto Pain Painter's downsides, Shiranui Spectralsword exists. Its effect is to banish itself and a monster from the grave to special summon a synchro monster of the same level as the two banished monsters added together as long as it's a zombie, basically a graveyard synchro summon. Since it's a *special* summon though, summons like Archfiend Zombie Skull, which need Plaguespreader, can be summoned through Spectralsword's effect.

Though I don't especially like vampire Genesis, i don't think it belonged so close to the top of the list either. Maybe between 5-8. Fushio richie and the fusion are harder to summon and have worse effects. The vampire archetype at least allows lord and Genesis to be searched and summoned with relative ease even if it really isn't worth it

How to semi fix Spirit of the Pharaoh: -Continious Spell card that is treated as "The First Sarcophagus" -On Activation, Special Summon 1 "Spirit of the Pharaoh" from Hand, Deck, or Gy (Or just Deck or GY) if you have 4+ monsters in Grave. -as long as this spell is face up, all monsters in youe GY are treated as Normal monsters and have their levels reduced by 3. This I would say is the minimum amount of effects needed to at least kind of save that card.

Dum card idea/new card type: an extra deck 2, 15 cards, each with a card that can be immediately attached to it’s respective monster. When attached, it a)gives normal monsters a completely new effects or b)gives effect monsters small bonus effects. Just thought this’d be a neat way to make these trash old ritual/fusion normal monsters decent.

You could probly use Pain Painter now in an XYZ rank 2 deck. Also, a card that could be on here would be Pumpking, King of Ghosts. Not only is it a high level zombie with low stats, it's effect is only for itself. What it does is increase its attack by 100 every turn while Castle of Dark Illusions, a fiend monster, is out on the field for 4 turns. Castle of Dark Illusions has 2 effects, a flip effect that increases all zombie monsters on the field's attack by 200 while it's out and while it's out, increase all zombie monsters' attack by 200 each turn for 4 turns. Together, Pumpking can increase its attack by a max of 1500 attack after 4 turns. The problem is both monsters have to survive for 4 turns, else it loses all those buffs, as once Castle, with 920 attack and 1930 def, leaves the field, so does the stat boosts. So a slow effect that actively negates itself after its partner leaves the field on a weak high level monster.

Why not do videos like this for all the types?

I was expecting Fushion Richie (Nosferatu Lich) to have a higher spot on the list just because of the sheer amount of work necessary to summon that thing.

Fushioh Richie was a pretty good boss monster in the early days of Yugioh. Back then, boss monsters were all about big numbers and maybe big burn damage, but Richie actually has some protection. I hope Dezard gets a retrain or maybe some support cards that will help bring it out easier.

I love how much lore there is in zombie cards like Tristan and Isolde which are based off a tragedy play and dead I guess Zombina Zombino and lots of cards appearing as zombies like zombie dragon which looks like dead thousand dragon

Id just rather use my foolish burial on mezuki, or simply have getsu fuhma/marionette mite or other zombie world type benefits like doomking. I didn't play back in the day, but I have played a lot of the WCS 2006 GBA game, and Vampire Genesis is actually not half bad. Vampire Lord can be special summoned by Pyramid Turtle, and you can run Call of the Mummy to special summon high level zombies from your hand, which also gives you a decent amount of fodder for Vampire Genesis.
