Between 1990 and 1993, the anime industry went through a tough phase with fewer productions, often just one or two series per season. This drop was probably due to economic challenges and industry shifts. Despite the scarcity, the latter part of this period brought forth some eventual classics. As the industry recovered, production quality improved, giving rise to memorable and influential series.
I think the challenges of those years acted as a spur for creativity and innovation (Evangelion for example). The limited number of anime allowed for a more focused approach, resulting in exceptional storytelling, unique art styles, and narratives. In the end, the anime from 1990 to 1993, though fewer, significantly shaped the industry and set the stage for the future.
