Agree with your top 5 completely haven't played a few of the games under that. Ori is my favorite Metroidvania it is as perfect as it gets. My favorite are ARPG and 3D platforming and have been for a long time but Metroidvania are great fun too.

Nice to see Monster Boy getting some love! I never see it on Metroidvania lists, probably because it's on the easier side and has a whimsical and light-hearted mood. Really fun game though!

Yeah i loved BS when playing on my xbox but switch version is trash and was unplayable at launch. Maybe better now but still sub par. Id reccomend it on another platform. @ph584

Is Dead Cells a metroidvania? I mean there’s not a lot of exploration and there is no backtracking. It’s more of a Rougelike

Yeah no this guy and a lot of others keep misinterpreting wtf a metroidvania is, sire dead cells has a very few select abilities that you keep but no back tracking, procedurally generated levels and progress reset on death? Yes 100% a rouguelike not a damn metroidvania people throw that term around to loosely

The game is fantastic, but its plagued with insanely terrible load times on Switch, and has issues with crashing. I wouldn't put it on a list specific to Switch for that reason.

When you think of metroidvanias you think of Metroid and Castlevania and Dark Souls a lot more the metroidvanias our souls like. One of the best of them being Blasphemous2 to which is more like Dark Souls sit in a Castlevania world than anything like metroid's I'm starting to think that some should be called metroidvanias and other should be called soulvania's a couple on your list could be considered more less Megaman clones than metroidvanias . There's one I highly recommend coming out soon it's a really good metroidvania I've already bid on Steam but I will be getting it on switch called nine years of shadow . How do you make a list blasphemous l and 2 deaths Gambit blood-stained ritual of the night a robot named hit vigil the longest of night. Heroine anthem zero . Lost epic . Sword of the vagrant. Grim Guardian afterimage Missing ?

I played both and HK was a masterpiece, but I was completely in love with Ori. I guess it depends on each individual preference and we can all agree that both belong into the list of best metroidvanias ever.

For me Hollow was super good, but damn, both Ori games are another level man. Actually I prefer Blasphemous and Ender L. over HK.. But I insist, lovely game and waiting for Silksong!

btw F.I.S.T is good, playing it now (almost finished) I like its combo system, probably better than MK because you can create your own combinations, unfortunately those combos are almost useless against strong enemies they just interrupt them, @@dantefitts

I agree. I have played Hollow, Knight, and the second Ori. Well, both are good, hollow knight I could play multiple times. Ori I had no desire to play it again. It was still very good though.

I’m looking for a new Metroidvania. Dread was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences ever, but it should have been 2-3 times longer. Hollow Knight was fascinating and unreal - hard though. I’ve never came so close to a true rage moment as HK. I just 100% Ori and the blind forest, so whisps is probably my next move. Talk about a stunning game and beautiful story. I keep hearing about Axiom Verge and Blasphemous. The latter left off this list. AV looks a little too old school, while I don’t mind the look, I get annoyed with a limited D Pad control style. It feels clunky, maybe AV isn’t like that? TL;DR recommendations please?

Axiom verge is great, don't let the old school graphics fool you, I think it actually has one of the best stories in the genre. If you're looking for something more souls-inspired (like Hollow Knight) Blasphemous is a good choice, and I'd also recommend Salt and Sanctuary and Vigil: The Longest Night. A few easier games I can recommend are The Messenger (if you're good at platforming) and Super Metroid (if you've got a Nintendo system.)

I play on Switch. Just bought Salt & Sanctuary. I’m about to start Ghost Song. Vigil isn’t on Switch. What about Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night? I hear the Switch port isn’t great. Have you played?

@UltraGeezer bloodstained is awesome. It has most bugs fixed. I played through about 2 years ago and the only issue i had was losing a couple of large progression saves. Happened like twice but i just went back and did it over, didnt freak me out to bad. I cant remeber how the issue happened (been a couple years since playing) but I think it was lack of me saving often enough and the game crashing.

These lists are always so predictable. The games at the bottom are personal favorites of the writers (or games they’ve been asked to bump) and the top games are always the same 5-8. I mean… where the heck is Blasphemous or Bloodstained? Or even at least one Shantae game? That being said, props on Owlboy and Cave Story+. I feel they never get enough love.

But, it was on the horizon. So, it should’ve been well into your psyche, at that point!) aren’t in the Top 3 or 4 - & that’s at MINIMUM, then I can’t take your list seriously. Honestly. DEADCELLS IS NOT I REPEAT NOT a metroidvania, it is a roguelike completely different, a metroidvania doesnt reset your progress after dying, sure there are other permanent abilities you acquire but calling it a metroidvania fuck no its not
