The double SACD release is great, BUT... also... the concert they released on DVD has a killer discrete live mix. Highly recommended.

Another awesome video, thanks!Some really great recommendations. Looking forward to trying them--especially Steely Dan, Gaucho, Dark Side of the Moon and Hotel California. Love that version of the Night at the Opera. The Beatles White album is really great, too. Awesome news about the Doobie Bros release.

The Doobie Brothers The Captain And Me Was available on DVD-Audio and is available on stereo SACD. The DVD-Audio is Multi-Channel and sounds fantastic! Alan Parsons Project's On Air on DTS is up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here and Roxy Music's Avalon as some great sounding Surround sound discs.

Great list, but I'm shocked none of the Elton John SACD's made the list - those are all reference quality mixes. I regularly pull out 'Tumbleweed Connection' to demo for visitors. Also missing, but most likely because it's not classic rock, is Neil Wilkes' incredible mix of Love & Rockets' 'Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven'. And I'm also a huge fan of Peter Gabriel's 'Up' SACD. Hard for me to choose top 10. But if I did, I'm sure those would be in there.

My top Ten in no particular order Roxy music Avalon Elton John Goodbye yellow brick road dvda or bluray Jethro Tull Aqualung on Bluray ELP Brain Salad Surgery dvda Rush- Farewell to kings Steven Wilson version- This made a Rush fan out of me!! Eagles Hotel California dvda- All I can say when I had my Acura Tl this was pure nirvana Fleetwood Mac Rumors DVDA same as above Bruce Soord-All this will be yours DTS lush and discreet the acoustic side is also amazing. Yes Tales of topographic Oceans.. Steven Wilson Any of his solo work Honorable mention XTC-Skylarking-Mike cannot thank you enough for showing me how good this group is and what a fantastic CD

Terrific video. Oh for some disposable income! I don’t have many surround mixes but I love Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle” (DVD), although the memorable “Space Intro” is oddly absent. There’s also video content of a more recent concert performance on it as well. Would love to see some of the Beach Boys 70’s albums mixed for surround.

I’m amazed Jean Michele Jarre Aero isn’t included , it really is the most stunning surround mix I’ve ever heard and it was purely recorded for surround and it will showcase any system to its max. an incredible piece of work. I’m sure everything else is very very good but out of all the surround I’ve ever heard , this is top of the pile

I love it too. It was a vote of some of our peers though! I'm so glad Waters had it mixed in to 5.1. It's an all-time favorite album of mine.

First I thought about good old classics albums that I love like Parsons ‘Tales’, most of Oldfield's multichannel mixes, Pink Floyds ‘Meddle’ and many more…. But I ended up picking albums with multichannel mixes just the way I want them: Stick Men - ‘Prog Noir’, Pat Mastelotto & Markus Reuter’s - ‘FACE’ (mc mix close to done:), Markus Reuter - ‘Truce’, Markus Reuter - ‘Music Of Our Times’, Keith Hopcroft - ‘Route Secondaire’, Interstellar Sequence - ‘The Chrysalids’, Interstellar Sequence - ‘Sequence Of Life’, Michell Guzmán - ‘Redshift’, Bernhard Wöstheinrich - ‘Elsewhere’ & odyssey - ‘metastasia’ ;-)

Grover Washington, Winelight: Just the Two of Us . The best of all that I have bar none, and I have all of Porcupine Tree's and Steven Wilsons, Toto, Beck, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc. I will say that some of the vocals on Billy Joel SACDS is fantastic and worth a listen.

Top video LiS! I can't believe I didn't put 'Ship Ohoy' by The Ojays in my original list?! In fact there's a few I'd change so I'll have a refresh and post later... I think 'Rumours' by Fleetwood Mac was mixed by Ken Caillat. As much as ES deserves extra credit! I only say that because he also did a couple of single mixes on some Silverline compilation albums that peeps might not know about. A few famous songs which don't sound too bad... Considering! 😎

Very similar to what I would include. Just ordered Metheny was not aware of it, thanks. I would throw in some NIN and Primus mixes up there as well. I like Elton John’s releases and if you want some great immersive vocals I gotta recommend Lady Smith Black Mombazo! Love immersive audio!

The Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies DVD-Audio is stunning in surround and much better than the recent BluRay Quadio release on Rhino. The bonus Elected video is a great watch.

I know I keep adding comments HOWEVER, I came across a surprisingly good DVD-AUDIO disc of Crowded House’s debut album. Of course it’s out of print like most DVD-AUDIO’s are so I can’t believe I accidentally came across it brand new for $14.99. If you haven’t heard it it’s a really good surround mix. Nice visuals with lyrics that progress along with the music. I also came across a Silverline DVD-AUDIO version of Tesla’s “Standing Room Only”. That disc is kinda MEH! but it’s cool to add to my collection. IMO Silverline released some decent surround mixes but that isn’t one of them, plus I didn’t really pay attention to the fact that “Standing Room Only” is a live album so it doesn’t have much if any surround delight but it’s still nice to have. Every now and then I’ll come across a decent DVD-AUDIO album for a decent price but most decent ones are selling for wallet draining prices and then my dumbass pays it because I’ve just gotta have it. I still wish Rush would release some of their 80’s-90’s albums in DVD-A or Blu-Ray audio but I don’t think that’s going to happen. They released “Moving Pictures” in Dolby Atmos on Apple Music but that kinda sucks. Actually Apple itself kinda sucks. B

Great video Mike, as always. I’m a little surprised that the Genesis 5.1 mixes didn’t get more votes. I think collectively, any of the box sets are fantastic, but the 1970-1975 Peter Gabriel era collection is stunning. Progressive rock is just made for surround. I also really like Mary Fahl’s interpretation of “Dark Side of the Moon”. Fantastic surround mix by Bob Clearnountain. I also would have voted for the Toy Matinee record and “The Division Bell”. Both of those sound great to me, too.

I forgot to add: I really enjoy Sting’s “...Nothing Like the Sun” in 5.1. The Beatles’ “Love” is stunning. And I agree with another commenter: Peter Gabriel’s “Up” is incredible too.

Great video. I agree with most of the titles but I would have included Bryan Ferry: Boys and Girls (kind of a sequel to Roxy Music: Avalon) and Flaming Lips: Yoshima Battles the Pink Robots. I have a few others in mind but need to listen to them again before making any claim on them.

Wow, cannot believe you/your participants missed THE MOST IMPORTANT dvd-A, dts, DD album ever released. Not just in sonic multichannel terms but also great songwriting ability. One of the earliest direct to digital 5.1 releases. 'Nightfly' from Donald Fagen. If ever there was an album to take with you when shopping for a new acquisition in terms of an audiio system, vynil stereo, or digital surround (multipul formats), this is it!!

Very informative video! I'm kicking myself for not purchasing the Chicago Quadio Box. I have the DVD-Audio releases and the limited quad release of Chicago Transit Authority which sound awesome.

Hopefully, if you keep seeking Chicago Quadio you'll find a decent deal. I've patience pays off, for me, from time to time (e.g. Genesis Green Box SACD version).

Just a word of warning for anyone contemplating getting the immersion Floyd sets for the quad mixes of WYWH and DSotM (which I agree are fab) , try to avoid the EU editions. The WYWH blu-ray has three audio glitches, and the DSotM blu-ray has failed for many over the years. But the North American immersion sets seem fine (see the Steve Hoffman & QQ forums for discussions on the discs), so caveat emptor.

I own a copy of Linkin Park reanimation on DVD audio. The 48khz 24bit 5.1 surround mix is stunning and holographic sounding. They are masters in the studio. Highly recommend.

Great list! But where is ELP's Brain Salad Surgery on DVD-Audio??? Probably my #1. The Doors' LA Woman has incredible dynamics (from whispered lyrics to in-the-room drum thwacks). The front-to-back layered lyrics on Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection's Love Song always gives me goosebumps. Why did his Don't Shoot Me album never come out in 5.1 - or when WILL it come out?

Early years) Primus: sailing on the sea of cheese, Beatles: white album, Eremgence (Atmos edition), Best of the guess who, Reanimation: Linkin park, E.L.P: Brain salad surgery.

Wow! Where’d Close To The Edge and the other Yes albums, and Jeff Beck and Beck and Chicago come from? I’m very glad I found your channel! I have some of those other ones on SACD or BluRay. Could never find an affordable Avalon. :-( I’m surprised there weren’t more Beatles super-deluxe sets. I’ve got almost all of those and I think they’re great, though I’m very disappointed Revolver didn’t come with a BluRay (wassup with that?) I also have Allman Bros. Live @Fillmore East and Elton’s Madman. No love for those? My faves though, are XTC’s surround series. Excellent! Or maybe I just love XTC. My problem is my surround system sucks compared to my 2.1 setups. Help, please!

I hear today the Appetite of Destruction High Fidelity Blu-ray Pure Audio of the Gun's N Roses and that was mind blowing.... It has the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 96kHz and the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 96kHz and the DTS was way better, was amazing experience.

@@lifeinsurround Thanks for the reply. The Piazzolla is the closest thing to a "classical" recording on my list. It's a collection of Piazzolla string pieces recorded by a chamber orchestra. Astor Piazzolla's most famous record is Zero Tango Hour. If you are not at all familiar with his work, think the score to the film Amelie, which I would say is highly influenced by Piazzolla. Anyway as this is a chamber recording (probably 15 or so players) it's nice and full compared to a quartet, but still intimate compared to a full symphonic recording. The music is both modern (with lots of percussive and aggressive bowing techniques) and highly melodic, a tough combo to find in modern orchestral works. The compositions are soulful and the performances are both powerful and sexy. As it is a live (in hall) string recording, don't expect anything highly discrete, but especially when the low strings belt it out (which is often) the surround field fills out very nicely from the higher strings which are more front facing. Great recording, highly dynamic, not "washy" at all. But like all of the best surround discs, it starts with excellent source material (music and performances) and is heightened by the recording and mix. I just checked and it does not seem to currently be in print (at least not for sale on Amazon) but worth tracking down if any of that description interests you. I know for many people more firmly rooted in the pop/rock world (which would be myself as well), it can be hard to find cool orchestral recordings. This record rocks and is definitely one to seek out.

@@lifeinsurround Yeah, well he began his career in the height of punk late 70's then got more into rock, mainstream and then some truly soul and jazz infused but mostly pop. Very talented. Live interpretations as compared to his studio output are outstanding. Night and Day is one worth checking out.

A good Top 15 - I can't really disagree with any, and there are some I've not dipped my toes in to such as the Steven Wilson Yes work, or the Chicago box set. I'm not sure if this was ever post-recording mixed, but Kraftwerk's excellent live DVD 'Minimum-Maximum' not only sounds beautiful, but has some fantastic surround effects, and truly adds a further dimension to the 2-channel version. Also worthy is the 5.1 of Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers, though that is rather patchy, in my opinion.

I plan to cover Legend soon. Patchy is right. There are a few good reasons. When it's at it's best though... Wow! Kraftwerk released a blu-ray recently called Catalogue 3-D. It's a must. I've never seen minimum-maximum at a price I can tolerate.

The DARK SIDE 5.1 has many issues, so cannot wait for the new Dolby Atmos version. SEA CHANGE is great, esp. on SA-CD. RUMORS and HOTEL CALIFORNIA are great. I like the DTS 5.1 form the SGT. PEPPER'S DVD only in its box set. CHICAGO II and V have 5.1 DVD-Audio releases also worth your time if you can get them. I'll let you know if I find that DVD-Audio of GAUCHO cheap.

Mentionable: Jean-Michel Jarre, Aero [...] "Purportedly the world's first album released for 5.1 systems" [...] "being fully "constructed" in 5.1 surround sound, it contains re-recorded versions of some of his most famous tracks" [...] (Source: Wikipedia). One can mix tapes (never thought in 5.1) to death, and occasionally, it may work, as the music is simply brilliant, even in mono. But even if someone doesn`t like synths, it may be good to know the roots... ;o)

The Crystal Method; Legion of Boom is an interesting 5.1 mix though musically it’s weird. My Cadillac SRX has a 10 speaker 5.1 Bose system in it and it sounds phenomenal. I bought the majority of my DVD-AUDIO discs in 2006 but I haven’t really had any way to enjoy them except for at home. I don’t mind that but I wanted to be able to listen to them on the go. Now, 15 + years later I finally can and I love it! I don’t know why Cadillac stopped putting DVD-AUDIO capable players in their cars/SUV’s because it’s so much better quality than MP3’s.

One of these days I'd like to have a car with surround. Maybe my next car. I'd prefer USB capability, so I can load up a HD with FLACS. Don't want to be restricted to one format. I think the new Acuras can do USB.

I'm not sure what the criteria is here. What was the vote for, best surround mix or best surround version of a great album. From the full list, it seems like many votes were cast for favorite album available in surround and nothing more. IMO the best surround mix ever is Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots which didn't even make the list.

Yoshimi is a great and special mix and has been mentioned multiple on this channel. I think your assessment of the criteria used by voters here is fairly accurate. The love of the album musically is often going to be a factor.

Not necessarily. Most DVD/BD players can play an SACD if it is hybrid, meaning it has CD and SACD layers. But, in order to play any SACD layers (stereo or surround) your player has to be SACD compatible. You manual should say.

@@lifeinsurround I generally prefer the 5.1 mixes but that aren't all created equally. eg: a fav album of mine is The Moody Blues "In Search of the Lost Chord". But the 5.1 isn't a true 5.1 mix as the masters were lost. So it's hard to say what I prefer. I really would rate each mix separately. I will say that generally Steven Wilson's 5.1 mixes are terrific.

I think the technology would be easy enough, but I'm not sure they'll ever have the incentive. The vast majority of content creators (shooting from their iPhones) are probably always going to create stereo or mono soundtracks. Perhaps a video hosting site can specialize in surround, as a niche.

I actually gave my copy to a friend, as I had heard it and he hadn't, and at the time the only copies were many hundreds of dollars. Just keep looking. Ebay, Amazon, discogs, QQ Swap Meet. Hope springs eternal.

I did not like the Pink Floyd surround mix that much, it didn’t feel too different from their normal versions. The best surround album I’ve ever heard was the Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk in surround but as far as I know it’s only in the deluxe edition which is expensive.

I think most surround enthusiasts would pick Rumours or the self-titled album above Tusk. Tusk is mastered super-hot in the front channels, which kills a bit of enjoyment for me. If you're not hearing the surround awesomeness of Pink Floyd you might be listening to a James Guthrie mix, instead of the classic 70's mixes. In any case, most listeners rate them VERY highly. Might be worth reevaluating.

@@lifeinsurround I usually boost the gain on the back 2 channels. Tusk is so densely produced that it greatly benefits from the extra space 5.1 affords. Of course, Im biased because Tusk is my favorite album. I'm just not a fan of 5.1 albums that aren't dense because there ends up sounding flat.

I am disappointed with DSOTM, Hotel California, and Rumours. Some tracks clearly have more surround mixing effort, while others have mix like early “ping-pong” stereo. In other words, the mix makes me dizzy because it is not logical. Rumours and DSOTM are such bad mixes I could not get through the albums without the urge to vomit. BIM, on the other hand, is just awesome.

A set of quad headphones with DSOTM would kill you..lool But I loved it . I don't care for the stereo over 5.1 mixes put out as was the Guthrie version of DSOTM ...etc you have 5.1 channels USE THEM..If I wanted stereo, I would use the 2 channel one..aka no imagination..5.1 gives you a wider tapestry for musical expression.I used to moderate for Qudraphonic Quad under ALLAROUNDSURROUND
