I generally don't bother with new/updated versions of games I already own (at least partially since selling used games around here isn't trivial). But in this case they also had a level for an upgrade pack instead of the full new collector's edition, so I did back that... 😞 Most of the WYG games are (were?) indeed very very good. At some point they stopped selling directly from their site, drastically slowed (or stopped) their releases, and I figured it's about the end. Then this KS looked like a potentially positive sign, getting some money in from an upgraded known successful and relatively popular game so that they could get back on their feet and get to making new ones. Given the long track record, I had very few concerns. And, well, that didn't work out.

The failure of MCE is an example where the crowdfunding platform fails backers. Creators running off with funds block all sorts of avenues to completion. The designers (if outsourced) are stuck with nothing (if not pre-paid). The backers are stuck with nothing. The printer was stuck with a bunch of stuff in their warehouse for a long time before they likely tossed them all into the trash bin (or re-used them for other games; you might for example spot the coins being used in another game being published someday if not already). The gametrayz that Noah produced are likely scrapped. The 25-50% down payment with the printer in China was lost (unless they had a better than normal deal for a lesser up front cost). Even worse would be a higher than 50% deposit but I think that range is fair. So aside from coin, trayz, and the upfront deposit Mariano and Veronica ran off with the rest to pay their bills (medical, food, utilities, moving expenses, etc.). The printer of course may have actually profited a bit if they didn't spend that deposit on the proto manufacturing efforts. If they spent more than the deposit to get to that stage then they lost money. WYG claimed that about 99% of the game was ready before the campaign was even started (see KS "Risks" section in the campaign) so aside from a few component quality checks and so forth there wasn't supposed to be a huge amount of money thrown at design. Even their intermediary Fortunato (an propulsion systems expert in the Auto industry located in Shanghai for a few years) was paid nothing. The 2 designers of the game were paid nothing. Backers funds were essentially embezzled. There is no way they mismanaged this money making actual business decisions related to the project. Noah or the coin company or the printer in China did Not eat up all this capital funding from backers. Mariano and Veronica simply walked away with the funds and strung us all along by feeding lies to their friend and printer in Shanghai. I almost feel sorry for Fortunato in Michigan. That said he has IMHO one of the most expensive games in the history of board gaming ever produced. He has potentially either the only copy of MCE or maybe 1 of less than 10 total maybe 5 (1 for each designer? 1 for Mariano?). Its hard to say if the BGG ownership status is accurate. The only possible ones I trust there are the ownership records by the designers and Fortunato. Too many of us marked them owned when we should have selected "Pre-Ordered". If and only if they manage to sell the IP to all these games with the requirement that the buyer complete the Madeira campaign do backers stand a chance of seeing ANYTHING from the campaign. The printer rep has labeled Mariano as unreliable and IMHO has not kept any of the material on standby . The time to negotiate a 3rd party was when the printer asked for final approval - ~5/13/2023. Transparency was in order. "Sorry we ran off with the money, we're putting our IP up for sale" but the buyer's purchase price has to cover the cost of this campaign. But why? There doesn't seem to be any affordable mechanism for 4k backers to demand anything from a new owner of WYG IP. There doesn't seem to even be a contract between buyers and creators in the crowdfunding space. What if anything prey tell protects crowdfunding from the creators seeing the GIANT cookie jar and running off with the funds? Well reputation in the industry may certainly be a factor. Was there actually a crime? Is taking crowdfunding funds and using it for personal expenses a crime? Would fear of being charged with such a crime be a deterrent? The larger the campaign the larger the cookie jar. It seemed to all of us that the in real life problems that Veronica in particular faced put her in a position to simply take the money and run to pay her bills to help her family. If this is legal than it suggests to me that something needs to change in the crowdfunding platform to escrow backers funds to be used for and by backers to pay printers, fulfillment centers, and yes designers of the game to get it done. Its time to stop trusting creators with ALL the funding money. We need a substantial redesign in funding distribution mechanisms to prevent this kind of "theft"/embezzlement. Perhaps a very specific platform being offered by printers/fulfillment partners should be established where the creators/designers focus on their expertise and get paid when the game is delivered to backers. Funds used to back a campaign need to be sequestered such that they are used for that production only. Escrow arrangements come to mind. Stop robbing Peter to pay Paul. This wasn't the issue for MCE but it is an issue for other campaigns. So even if WYG did sell the IP, and even if the new company that owns the IP from WYG what about the contracts with the designers of MCE? Paulo and Nuno? They were paid nothing. They had contracts with WYG. If WYG sells its stuff to a 3rd party. What becomes of those contracts? Sorry I'm not privy to the contract for MCE between WYG and P&N. But P&N went to court to get paid and M&V didn't show. The only party that is "whole" is Noah of Gametrayz. He got paid for his work. The game trays were delivered to the printer in China. The Coin company (sorry I'm not sure I actually ever focused on identifying the coin supplier) were also delivered to the printer. A proto-type run was completed and then it was all TRASHED (again IMHO). What printer holds on to this stuff for over a year with ZERO communication from WYG? All the printer needed was a create copy IP contract and they could have worked with backers of the campaign and perhaps goodwill from KS to share the addresses of the backers with the printer and a way to request an additional round of funding to get this done and shipped to cover what was "taken"/embezzled. Without a mechanism to hand the campaign over to backers and release any IP to backers to get the project done, backers are TOAST. Backers don't need to own the IP for future use they just need to have the rights to get the game completed even if the creator walks away. This needs to be baked into the campaign. Backers should be instantly granted the IP to complete the campaign as a condition of backing the project. Backers should have a way to take control of a campaign if the creator doesn't communicate with them for X period of time where X = some consensus based reasonable period (get a group of creators and backers to has this out). To suggest that some 3rd party can just sweep in and own the IP and owe the bakers NOTHING for all their contributions to the project is IMHO a foolish failure of the crowdfunding platform. Kimm Alfonso of KS, you do indeed have your work cut out for yourself to figure out how to plug the leaks in the crowdfunding model to isolate backers funds to the project and protect campaigns from villains. To protect them from outside liabilities (Up Front), cut and run by creators (Madeira), and robbing Peter to pay Paul (Monumental Africa/Namiji). Pardon my essay. You can see more of my MCE discussion on BGG. To creators who face hard times use go fund me to request help first please. I've had Energy Empire Cold War delivered after the creator DIED and the widow lost the password to the campaign and company website for six months. I'm about to see Company of Heroes delivered after one of its designers DIED and his family had to pick up the business and figure it out in his absence. Backers can offer support if you are open to them in these awful real life situations. Energy Empire backers did pay for shipping twice but we're happy that we got the product and were understanding. Company of Heroes backers too I hope were patient. (I'd have to go check the comments but I don't recall many backers inappropriately venting.). You do not necessarily have to destroy your company, your career, your campaign if you seek other avenues of support with transparency. That said I think the platform itself needs to do a LOT more in insulating backers funds from precisely the cookie jar it becomes when individual creators or their company face other debtors (Upfront, and yes likely Veronica/Mariano) looking to be paid. Our funds need to be secured from such outside forces. Should they be seen as secured loans to get the product? Should they be escrowed with rock solid contracts that say if the funds aren't used to complete the project and can only be released for printing and fulfillment otherwise they must be refunded to backers. We (ok the platform) needs to do a lot more to protect backers funds from being seen as easy targets for meeting creator's other liabilities whether personal or corporate. What ever happened to Up Front. Go to BGG or Google it. EYE OPENER.

@@BoardGamingRamblings about a third solo, a third 2 player, and a third 3 player. 3 player is fine but runs a little long, perfect at 2 player though. My preference would be 2 > Solo > 3.

That is a great question! I’ll try to answer in a short way, let me know if it makes sense: A game can be tight in different ways, but mostly I talk about this, when I talk about tightness: -Few actions -Hard to have enough resources -Never enough money to do what you want -Timing of actions is very important -Small mistakes can have big consequenses I hope that made at least some sense :)

I have liked some of the new versions, but I am mostly backing the new games in the City Collection going forward :)
