The first challenge was because the umpire didn't have the balls to overrule and knew it was in. The second was way too late. I'm torn because a call is a call and I think if wrong should be automatically overruled whether a player asked for a challenge or not. But those aren't the current rules. So I think the umpire was way off because I see a lot of them refusing people challenges after they hit the ball yet here she gives Venus the opportunity, but really those points did not belong to Strycova anyway.

But Radwanska “got greedy”/over confident by claiming she knew better than the overrule. In doing so she rejected the “freebie” replay in order to insist, no, I believe it was out, I know better than the line judge who overruled it. Again challenge implies that Aga would have requested a challenge even if no original out call / subsequent correction had been made.

I dont understand how Radwanska could lose a point if it was a line person who stopped the play 🤔
@s.w.d4010
@s.w.d4010 3 жыл бұрын
Николай Николай Because she challenged the call after it was corrected. The line’s person called it out and then corrected the call. If Radwanska didn’t challenge the corrected call, they would’ve replayed the point. However, after the call was corrected, Radwanska challenged the call, thus stopping play. That’s why she lost the point.
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 3 жыл бұрын
@@s.w.d4010 Even if she challenged the call after it was corrected, the point is still a let. The play is already stopped when the linesperson corrected themselves. If a player challenges and it's wrong, they still replay the point. There have been plenty of matches just this year where players have challenged corrections, and they were wrong. And they didn't lose the point. I've seen Roger Federer do it plenty of times on calls that were overruled or corrected, and his challenge was wrong, and they still replayed the point. In Venus Williams' loss today at the French Open, the umpire made a correction on a ball that was called out. She disagreed and had the umpire check the mark. He showed her that the mark was on the line, and they still replayed the point. The only way Aga could lose the point is if she actually gave up on the point and didn't hit the ball. But she did hit the ball back into the court.
@s.w.d4010
@s.w.d4010 3 жыл бұрын
Pomerlain89 Why is this so hard to understand? An out call was made. Play was stopped for the FIRST time. The line’s person corrected the call. So the players would have to replay the point because Radwanska had a play on the ball. BUT Radwanska challenged the CORRECTED call. She stopped play for a SECOND time because she thought the ball was out and it wasn’t. That’s why she lost the point. If you stop play to challenge a call and you lose the challenge, you LOSE the point. She should’ve just kept her mouth shut. They were going to replay the point before she challenged the corrected call.
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 3 жыл бұрын
@@s.w.d4010 How is it so hard to understand the THE PLAY WAS ALREADY STOPPED AND A LET? Challenging a corrected call does not stop play and it doesn't lose the point for the challenging player if they are wrong. If the challenge is wrong, the point is still replayed. Like I've said there have been matches at this year's USO and FO, where players have challenged a correction, and they were wrong. They did not lose the point. I've seen this same umpire, Kader Nouni, have players challenge a correction or overrule that leads to a let, the player challenges the call, is wrong, and the point is still replayed. On serves, a linesperson might call out, and the umpire issues an overrule and issues a first serve since the returner got the ball back. The returner will challenge the overrule, be wrong, and it's still just a first serve, not a loss of point.
@s.w.d4010
@s.w.d4010 3 жыл бұрын
Pomerlain89 No that’s not correct. The lines person called the ball out and then corrected it. That means the players would have to replay the point right? But INSTEAD of replaying the point Radwanska decided to challenge the CORRECTED call. If the ball would’ve been OUT Radwanska would WIN the point but the ball was IN so she LOSES the point! A decision was already made to replay the point but Radwanska CHOSE NOT to replay the point and used a challenge which she got WRONG. That’s why she lost the point. That is the point you keep missing. You are not understanding the challenge system. If a player STOPS play which Radwanska did to challenge the ball and the player gets the challenge wrong they LOSE the point.

No the umpire correctly followed the ITF rules. I agree it's a confusing scenario and kind of hard to get your head around, but when Aga challenges the ball it effectively overrides the "fault correction" - so is treated like she stopped the point. If you challenge an IN call in the rules it means you believe the ball was out - so if the challenge is wrong you have to forfeit the point. Aga thought she had nothing to lose by challenging because either way they would replay the point, but it actually doesn't work like that - that's why the umpire looked a bit bemused by her challenging. Most people would have assumed this as well so I don't blame her. This scenario is quite rare, but the outcome was correct by the ITF rules.
@tendrugimichal
@tendrugimichal 3 жыл бұрын
@@yeahiagree1070 That is an impressively long piece of bullshit my friend. The WTA issued an apology to Radwanska after the match. The very famous KADERGATE ended with Aga being right, and it is because she wasn't the one to stop the point but the linesperson.
@tendrugimichal
@tendrugimichal 3 жыл бұрын
the situation is actually not THAT rare. I've seen it dozens of times after 2012, and in each and every case, the point was replayed (as it should).
@yeahiagree1070
@yeahiagree1070 3 жыл бұрын
@@tendrugimichal Oh wow, you use tennisforum.com, I'm really impressed. LMAO! I suggest you actually read the comment again. The point of contention is challenging an IN call. The rules state that if a player does this, there is an assumption from them that the point is over. Challenging with a back-up replay is effectively trying to take 'two bites of the cherry' - sportsmanship. I just SAID Aga has no blame in this example because of the confusing forfeit rule. The "rare scenario" is the point NOT being replayed - you literally just agreed with me that it's rare for this to happen. Also this ITF rule has been clarified SINCE this match that happened years ago - and the WTA "apology" was randomly claimed by Aga with no context. An "apology" (real or not) could refer to numerous issues surrounding the overrule and how the rule was explained - it's not an admission that she was wrongly forfeited a point. All this is explained in your precious KADERGATE thread btw. Nice try though!

I've seen many times tennis players admit the truth for sake of their opponents. I used to play amateur billiard pool and bumped to dishonest situations only twice. There's nothing in sports like admitting a mistake in favour of your opponent. I've done it as many times as it was done to me (at least), but never did I let referee make a wrong call for my good...

@@ironhazes Wtf is funny? That I am pointing there are sports and competitions which promote honesty and honor over winning? Have you ever seen a tennis player, snooker, billiard (amateur or pro) or else admit a mistake for their opponents' sake? Somehow WTA is loaded with unsportsmanlike conduct. This is funny to me and I've got no explanation, but show one example when female tennis player admits something in favour of her opponent and I'll show you five examples of males doing it.

Kader Nouni is a good umpire, but that was a bad call on Aga. As soon as linesperson called "Out" and then "Correction" the point is a let and it's replayed, regardless if the player challenges or not. Not to mention, Aga still hit the ball back into court, so she didn't give up on the point. We've seen numerous matches where linespeople correct themselves, and when the player challenges and the correction is proven to be right, the point is replayed.

@db200508
@db200508 3 жыл бұрын
After looking at it again Kader is correct. The linesman called it out then immediately called correction. Kader didn't even get to say replay the point because Aga asked for a challenge. The challenge showed that the ball was good. At that point she loses the point because she incorrectly challenged a call that was good.
@cameronbedeau8542

@@db200508 I don't care if the umpire immediately corrected themselves. Once they say out the point is over and then it's at the least replay the point. And Aga then challenges. If ball is out, it's her point. If it's in, it's replay the point. It's never Safarova's point. Ever

@@jnayvann If you watched any of the HC tournaments this year, there were plenty of calls where the linespeople corrected themselves or the umpire made an overrule and the players challenged and it was wrong. They did not lose the point. The point was replayed. The point is dead once the linesperson makes a call, and if they say correction, it's automatically a let. Even if the player challenges the correction and it's wrong. The point is still replayed.

Radwanska vs Safarova: the ball was called out, then corrected= the point is over. That is an automatic replay. It doesn't matter if she challenges the call because the call from the linesman was already made as out. It makes no sense that a rally was stopped by the linesman and then corrected by the umpire, isn't replayed.
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 3 жыл бұрын
Except if the overrule by the chair umpire is wrong. If that ball had been out, and Aga challenged, and was correct, she wins the point. Happens at every tournament. Umpires and line judges do get overrules and corrections completely wrong, and should a player challenge it, and be proven correct, they get that point. There's no rule that if a line judge or umpire makes an overrule or correction, that the player can't challenge.

1st Radwanska should get the benefit of the doubt just because she had the guts to approach the net for her shot. 2nd Radwanska was only challenging to see if the ball was out, in which case she'd get the point...but since it was in, she did hit it back, it wasn't a winner, and the ball had been called out...she doesn't lose that point for challening.
