Tokyo ghoul really gave me that entry to expanding my mind to other genre of anime cause I was sticking to my slice of life, magic, etc… anime. But when I watched Tokyo ghoul for the first time my stomach was in knots…now all I do is watch dark, horror, action, gore etc….Anime

For my horror binge-a-thon, I watch Dorohedoro, Shiki, Another, Hell Girl, Highschool of the Dead, Higurashi When They Cry (2006 version and remake), and Devilman Crybaby.

The thing that I've come to appreciate about Hellsing Ultimate is Ze Major. Unlike most antagonists he pure a non combative character. But what he lacks in combat power he makes up for in charisma and intelligence. I mean you can't hate this man bc of how he presents and carries himself

Ah Tokyo Ghoul, the kind of anime I personally favored despite most seasons being generally hated. I didn’t mind the fact most details from the manga weren’t included for the anime, yet didn’t lessen my enjoyment. Also, Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima are my Favorite Couples of all time🥰

@@jumperwilli7770 I like Season 2, but I did prefer certain parts the manga has. For instance, in the manga, Kaneki managed to put up a better fight against Sachi (Rize’s ‘Father’) than how he went through in the anime. I still like the anime, though, and both Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima are my Favorite anime protagonists.

Higurashi rightfully deserved its number 1 spot cuz it just has all of the hallmarks of a good horror anime with characters you both love/fear, a somewhat isolated place, and of course the gore.

If you like these animes I would also like to recommend Angels of Death. It's a gauntlet of saw games and the story is complex and griping. Really great Anime with loads of symbols and metafors and as the end draws near you could already have figured out what's going on if you catch on. Plus the music is great op and endings.

Sadly some of the horror or psychological games turned into anime do not get as much love as they should. Angels of Death is both an amazing game and anime. Sad but beautiful. Im also a fan of Daganronpa.

The fun thing about Tera formers is that it was considered so brutal that that in order to censor it entire parts to almost the entire screen had to be blocked out butchering the anime because it became so difficult to follow that it just wasn’t worth watching

There’s a lesser known anime that should have been on this list. It’s called Happy Sugar Life, and the anime is one of the scariest I’ve watched and the manga is one of the scariest I’ve ever read. Do NOT let the name fool you, it is not for the faint of heart

Let's be honest, there can be only one number one on this list and you guys nailed it. Higurashi is by far the greatest horror, and for me personally the greatest anime at least up until this point. It's gonna have to be a really great show to be able to top it and not a single one of the other shows on this list came even close.

@wilhelmdietz4023 potentially, but I find so many horror anime lacklustre. It's just not scary, and in this case, boring. For example, I own all of Junji Itos works translated in English. The stories are well written, but not one of them are scary. Seems to just be a thing with anime/manga. It can be entertaining, but never scary

@@Wynterking94 It is not so much actually scary. You will not wake up, screaming in the middle of the night because you woke up dreaming about Higurashi. However it is actually a really beautiful story, this is the thing about Japanese horror. A lot of them have amazing stories, with amazing characters and this in either a spooky or creepy setting. The second one applies to Higurashi, it is mostly quite creepy and unsettling. It sounds like you haven't actually finished it, I would try and watch it in it's entirety sometime, before judging it, you will not regret it, because it is one of the most heart-wrenching, depressing, but also one of the most beautiful stories ever written.

@wilhelmdietz4023 Finished it. Interesting, but the first 14 episodes could've been condensed dramatically. Long, convoluted, and I can understand why up until episode 15 people wouldn't have a clue why time is resetting. As with American Horror Story and Stranger Things, if I have to wait so long to get good, it's not worth watching. That being said, I enjoyed the story and the different scenarios, but allowing the viewer to know what's going on, would go a long way

No ghost hunt or corpse party? Even Mushishi would've been a better choice than some on this list. Yet somehow a shounen action series AoT is on this list as horror? yikes. Violence/Gore does not equal horror given context.

The Umineko story is a great tragedy that can be explained without magic (which was the intention of the og visual novel). Too bad there is not a complete anime adaptation.

I'm also glad the Higurashi Gou and Sotsu, cleared it up that they are not connected as prequel and sequel. Higurashi will always be a stand-alone masterpiece.

Attack on Titan is the greatest story I've ever found in my life. P.S. If you want to give me recommendations (in order to despise aot), recommend me great books, not anime, I'm not into anime. Because I've read so many great books but aot is still the greatest work of fiction for me.

Yeah I was more sad that horrified. If anything I found it more Holocaust/mob mentality frightening than "horror" frightening. But then again I'm the weirdo that would see a wolf and say "puppy", see a "monster" and say "what's up?" In my experience the "normal human type" are the most self righteous and monsterous than the "weirdos or fringes of society".

2. This is what I call the definition of manga/anime horror. Makes sense that the downer ending is inescapable as Go Nagai intended to be a Fictional Anti-War Story.

Just finished a binge of the entire Tokyo ghoul anime. It wasn’t great. If you haven’t read the manga a lot of the context and world building is lost. Arcs are rushed, important details are skipped and they try to bring them in at the end, terminology is never explained, and the fates of multiple characters are just completely changed in some cases. If I hadnt read the manga, a few parts would have lost me. It’s an enjoyable watch but it suffers from a couple of the problems you’d expect from adaptation

We all can agree we knew Higurashi would be Number 1 it deserves to be no.1 . Meiruko Chan and Dorohedoro the horror anime with fan service and Comedy. Tokyo Ghoul the horror anime which could have become one of the best anime but never got the best adaptation. Promised Neverland same as Tokyo Ghoul 😭😭. Helsing Ultimate and Devilman Crybaby the real horror and unsettling animes yet so good. Is Attack on Titan really a horror anime I mean it doesn't feel like it . Another the horror suspense thriller anime that is a must watch for anyone even if you aren't a anime fan .

For me personally,when it's comes to horror its Claymore, fantasy - Claymore, music - Claymore, atmosphere - Claymore,drama, battle, picture,monsters all it's Claymore. This is literally a perfection in everything.

I never saw Narutaru but I totally agree on Bokurano that it's underrated. Though I'd recommend more people read the manga since they changed the end.

Mieruko-chan, Hell Girl, Promised Neverland, Shiki, Parasyte, Another, and Higurashi are actual horror series. Umineko is a terrible example since the anime was bad at any horror elements it tried to put forth, but its visual novels are apparently really good. Hellsing is debatable, since it's like 50% action and 50% horror in all sorts of flavors. Higurashi is a relic of its time, and it had some very lackluster seasons recently that boiled down to a friend who loves a friend a little too much, but the older seasons were amazing. The specials were also excellent, especially the SOUL BROTHERS one. The others are not horror series. They have horror elements, but are not actual horror series. Calling those horror is like saying Pokemon is an adult series.

Mmm, I think all the anime listed are good anime, but some miss the horror mark for me a bit! Maybe try watching Ghost Hunt (2005) and Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (2012)! I think these really fit a more horror-like genre than some of these sci-fi anime! (This being said, all the anime are good, and there are a plethora of others to enjoy too!)

High school of the dead was awesome I watched more than half of the horror anime on this list I watched high school of the dead along time ago it was a few years atleast I can't remember I remembered the first time I watched it it was awesome I wished the creator didn't die but still some say it will get a a season 2 but that's for the later years

Thanks for the ranking. It was very refreshing. Those who once gave on the TV Manga Zone Le Mag. Mostly I love old school anime style like Akira, the Vampire Hunter D, the Fist of the North Star, but in this ranking of yours has great suggestions . Gantz is very favorite for me. But this new 3D version looks amazing. I prefer the original but i will watch and this version. At the time, I had started watching Terra Formars but I interrupted him, and then I forgot his name and was no eble to continue watch again. But now thanks to you i will continue watch it because it's very interesting.

I'd switch out attack on titan (a series I hate 😑don't ask) with either Elfin Lied or Death Note. Also, I'd put Hellsing near the top if not the top.
