The Non-PI call in the NFC championship game of the Rams vs. Saints should be on this list. This was one of the worst calls ever in both football and sports history. This is also a great, if not best example of a team getting robbed.

I have a theory on that. The NFL wanted another team for football fans to be SO angry at, nobody would notice the Patriots cheating again throughout the remainder of the playoffs AND the superbowl that season. so the higher ups at the NFL told the officials not to throw the flag for pass interference at that point

In a rec league kickball game in 2007 or so in North Hollywood. I scored from second base after a pop fly after very thoughtfully tagging up. The umpire called me out because he said "I got home too fast" and mustn't have tagged up, despite not seeing it. I'm surprised this didn't make the list, as it cost our team a playoff game.

The 1972 USA-USSR basketball game should be No. 1 because it wasn't just a *mistake*. It was a robbery. Most of the others on the list were simply errors that happened in real time, and in a couple of these cases, the officials involved have apologized for missing calls that will haunt them even though there was no malice involved. In the USA-USSR game, the officials knew exactly what they were doing. If a ref just misses a call, and I get silver instead of gold, I'll say it was bad luck and gladly take my silver. In this case, I wouldn't take that medal, either.

Maybe not top 20, but Kerry Fraser's missed high sticking call in game 6 of the Western Conference final in 1993 still stings Leafs fans to this day. Wayne Gretzky's stick caught Doug Gilmour in the face in the first minute of overtime in Game 6. The ref later admitted that he thought it was the puck that caught Gilmour. The Leafs were leading the series 3-2, and the correct call, a four minute power play would have given them an incredible chance to end the series. Not only did Gretzky score the overtime winner, but the Kings won game 7.

If you were an American watching '72 Olympic basketball, that loss was by far the worst involving an American team. Doug Collins scored with 3 seconds remaining. The Commies inbounded and time ran out. Game over--the USA's perfect record continues. But after a long conference, the refs decide to replay the last 3 seconds. The Russkies tried again and failed, but the refs properly ruled that the inept timekeeper blew the horn as the ball was inbounded. Third time, well you saw it.(BTW, the best amateur player, by far, was Bill Walton, who declined to play to protest the Vietnam war. I like Bill, but I'm still pissed.)

Honorable mention: The Major. In the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoff first round, the Vegas Golden Knights were up 3-0 on the San Jose Sharks in Game 7. With under 11 minutes left an unfortunate incident occurred when Sharks forward Joe Pavelski, who was already nursing a sore jaw, got slammed into the ice inadvertently by Vegas’s Cody Eakin. Eakin was given a five minute major and a game misconduct, although it would be later shown that it was just an accident when Pavelski fell to the ice. The Sharks would take advantage of the extra power play time, scoring four goals in five minutes to take the lead. Although Vegas would tie it late, the Sharks would win the game and series in OT. The rules would be changed in the off-season where all potential five minute majors would be reviewed. Even if it’s not a major, the offending party will still have to sit for two minutes.

The trash on the field from the outfield infield fly was uncalled for. Nobody should ever go to those lengths when voicing their disapproval.

I don't know. I'm sure the delay gave the ump plenty of time to feel like a jerk for blowing the call.

A college football game with Washington at ND in 2009, at one point UW seemingly scored a rushing TD only to overturned because the cameras were not on the goal line resulting in eventual FG. On ND next possession they score a TD and attempt a 2pt try seemingly it was stopped but the refs didn't call it and the try succeeded. ND wins 37-30 in OT.

13:49 Oh he "later admitted" that he pretended to score that goal... "with this I don't mean any disrespect" while smirking ear to ear. I hate men like that, thank you my lord for admitting to cheating over a decade later... no disrespect right? To hell with his fake honesty and humility.

Fail Mary should have been a OPI but when a receiver and a DB catch the ball at the same time the possession goes to the receiver

I feel bad for the baseball fan who leaned forward and caught the ball. You know he had to have gotten bullied for that and probably even beaten up

Lions vs. Cowboys illegal touching call should’ve been on this list. The guy who caught the ball for the 2 point conversion reported eligible several times.

Wayne Gretzky high stick on Doug Gilmour. It was a 5 minute penalty and game misconduct call missed in overtime. Then Gretzky scores.

Houston Oilers vs Pittsburg Steelers 1980. Renfro was in and everybody knew it. The game would have been tied going into the 4th quarter. Best rivalry in football in the late 1970s.

So many of these calls are the result of officials missing something as it happens in real time, but is obvious in playback. That's why I don't have a problem with things like challenges. Missed calls can be game changing.
