For this list, we’ll be looking at films released for each year of the 21st century - so far - that were mostly underappreciated by audiences upon release, and are still struggling to achieve the full status they deserve. Our countdown includes "Brick", "The Nice Guys", “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou”, "Queen & Slim", “Prisoners”, and more! What do you think is the most underrated movie of the 21st century? I watched it for the first time at the weekend. Quality acting, the plot keeps moving, great on screen chemistry and I laughed much more than I expected.

I loved it the first two times I watched it in theaters but rewatched it recently with my girlfriend and didn't enjoy it as much, though I suspect its because I was worried she wasn't digging it haha

But I'm not sure why they said that the movie has a Christmas backdrop, when only the last 5 minutes of the movie take place during that time of year. The majority of the movie is set in late October

THANK YOU for including Best In Show! It’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen and gets better every time. I’d also include 2007’s Rocket Science. It’s a very funny and touching story about a boy with a terrible stutter who joins his high school’s debate team in an effort to impress the team captain (Anna Kendrick).

Credibility at an all time high for watchmojo after adding Take Shelter to this list. Nichols has become one of my favorite directors after watching that movie. Also, his brother is in one of my favorite bands and does a lot of the soundtracks to his movies.

For us who love it, 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou' is among Wes Anderson's best three films. The other two being 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and 'The Darjeeling Limited'.

All around amazing list. I agree with everyone I have seen 95% (Moon, Good Times, Nice Guys, Dredd and Brick especially) I would personally have Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in my list though, and Life Aquatic until Grand Budapest was my favorite W.Anderson movie

13:09. Dredd is A W E S O M E ! I watched it in theaters and I was astonished. I said it to all my friends, and they loved it too! I had no clue why the movie wasn't a big hit at the time. The 3D scenes were gorgeous to watch at the big screen. Hope the movie, someday, gets the credit it deserves. Thanks WM.

Underrated is not a bad position (except financially...). "Life aquatic" in not only Wes Anderson's best film but one of the best ever! It is just too sophisticated for most people (who didn't grew up on Jacques Cousteau films)

Life Aquatic is my first Wes Anderson film and still my favorite of his...its at least better than Darjeeling. Plus...it introduced me to Seu Jorge, who opened the door to other Brazilian artists for me. Sidenotes... Brick and Under the Silverlake are dope AF... Seven Psychopaths by the In Bruges director could have made this list for '12...loved that MacGruber was name checked here, as it IS the funniest SNL adjacent movie (f Popstar)...Dredd had to be seen in theater....Nice Guys is one of Shane Black's at best

The Libertine (2004) with Jhonny Depp, Samantha Morton and John Malkovich is another worth the watch, it's been said it was hugely undershadowed by Depp's most popular role at the time, that of Pirates of the Caribbean.

“Knives Out” (2019) is still very underrated! It’s such an engaging original murder mystery film having a solid all-star cast with enjoyable acting, good cinematography, and a refreshing take on how to solve the story.

In 2016 I have to go with Sing Street as the most underrated film of that year. It's a musical coming of age story set in the 80s about a kid in Ireland falling in love with both a girl, rock music, and the idea of pursuing freedom no matter the risk. It was completely overshadowed by La La Land as far as musicals go but I would argue is just as good if not better than the latter. Jack Reynor deserved a Best Supporting Actor Nomination, any of the songs deserved a Best Original Song Nomination, and the film itself deserved more than a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Picture: Musical or Comedy. At least it's getting a Broadway Musical that was already gaining traction Off-Broadway before COVID.

I'd replace 2020 with one of these: POSSESSOR: Because it was the most engaged an audience of a movie theater had ever been, and a Cronenberg is always a win if you like Lynchian things. CAPONE: Because everyone hated it for what it wasn't instead of appreciating the bizarre originality of what it is, also Tom Hardy tho. THE GENTLEMEN and THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW: Because everyone loved it and no one talked about it.

The Adventures of Power is the most underrated comedy of all time in my opinion, of course. In the same vein as Napoleon Dynamite, it boasts an impressive ensemble cast and is so quirky and weird in its dry campy style, I still can't believe it isn't more widely known. I've shown it to some of my friends and they are quick to dismiss it as well. Idk I just love it and can't understand why not many others do.

I can’t believe you didn’t have It Follows and Mandy on this list. It follows is one of the films that has saved the horror genre and Mandy gave us Nicolas Cage in top form again, and he’s had a career renaissance Color Out of Space, Willy’s Wonderland and now Pig, I mean Pig is fantastic.

List pros & cons Pros: “The Nice Guys” is one of the best comedy’s, if not movies, I’ve ever seen. Acting, script, sets, costumes and so forth are beyond!! A must see! “Little Children” also amazing! Cons: Anomalisa & In Bruges are like 2 of my least favorite movies in any genre. Not my cup a tea luvies.
