What’s up everyone. I hope you enjoy these photos because I love every single frame on this roll so damn much. I’ve also moved away from shooting very wide open and I’m loving f4 right now.

Joe, I'm amazed at the results of your Instagram survey. To me it is the end result (ie, the quality of the image) that is the most important. I make a point not to follow KZfaq photographers who consistently post bad images no matter how informative or entertaining they are. Yes, I like hearing how the image was made but if the example is a plain old snapshot that any 8 year old could take without thinking about composition and exposure, I won't subscribe. You notice I'm still a subscriber to your channel. That's because I like your images.

Great roll! I disagree with the poll, I'm absolutely interested in how you create great images! You seem to have a unique talent for capturing special moments and a lot of your photos have a certain feel and quality that I can't quite articulate. I'm way more interested in hearing and learning about how you go about creating that than I am hearing about your gear or camera settings. It could be just where I'm at in my photography journey, but I'm interested to hear more about how you go about approaching people to ask for pictures. We chatted a bit about it on facebook and I completely understand your hesitancy to share about it. I'm just not confident about my approach yet and the very few approaches I have tried have been unsucessful, so I'm looking to improve. You're my favorite photographer, thank you for sharing everything that you do, I appreciate you! Have a great day man!

Love your work Joe, Everyday you go out and the canvas has changed , Capturing the moment is why we take pictures. Thank you so much for sharing. I really enjoyed watching and viewing every photo, I did hit pause to view longer !!!

Thank you. I had to re-record quite a few of those because describing each situation in ten seconds was a serious test. Haha. Thanks for watching

I suppose the quality of the photos can just get lost in the video - and not just because of compression. Some photos interest me more than others, so I'll either need to pause the video or scroll back, which kind of breaks the "flow". I prefer to look at them at my own pace if they interested me, preferably on a specialized website like Flickr. What interests me more is the story behind the photo - how did it come about, how (and if) you directed the model, why (again, if) you chose that particular scene/background (was it the quality of light?), things of that nature. My favorite would then be seeing actual B-roll footage of them being created, however, I understand that it adds a ton of limits, overhead and distraction to the shooting process. I certainly wouldn't want to lug around a LAV and a GoPro each time I decide to go for a walk with a camera :)

Everything you mentioned is a huge moral and applicable dilemma. I’m past videos I’ve attached a GoPro to my camera, but I’ve found that my subjects feel as if I’m only taking their photo for the purpose of creating content rather than making art. The added step of remembering to hit record is also just enough of a change to take me out of my head and distract me from getting the right composition and settings. I made each photo display for 10 seconds in this video, which I think is 3 seconds longer than normal, and it still feels like they go by too fast. It was much easier to leave each one up for a lot longer when I post a full roll of 120 because it’s only 10 frames. I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Hey Joe. How do you handle a situation where you see a couple walking towards you but only one of them is interesting enough to photograph? Would you simply approach them and single out the face you want to photograph? Similarly for a group. How do you pry one person out of a group of 5 or 6? Also from your experience are people with their friends more likely to have their guard down and say yes to you?

This is a great question and the answer is very complicated. I’m almost solely motivated by making sure that my subject leaves their time with me feeling better about themselves and having had a very positive experience. Many, many times I’ll see a girl who is far more classically beautiful than her friend and I just let her go more often than not because I don’t want to make the friend feel bad. The same goes for a girl with her boyfriend in most situations unless they are much older. In a group situation it’s much different. The group is usually very excited for the friend I choose and they encourage them to do it. The hardest part is getting them to relax while all of them are staring at them. I also have a policy about not approaching people who seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere.

@@JoeLyman thanks for the insights. That's fascinating. I expected a different reply about the couple but I admire your humanity and empathy to let the photo go.
