Why would you underexpose a person by one stop if they have very light skin, the zone system says you should actually overexpose that person by one stop because light skin falls in zone VI and you metered for Zone V

You need to get away from the Amateur look ! Get that Flash off the camera. Flat light is the Enemy here.If working at night then at least use several flash guns with radio slave.

This is a really great suggestion. “Hey, drunk guy who barley know what planet your on. Stand in this one spot and stay still. I have a bunch of stories set up on the public sidewalk for street portraits.” That will define end well.

@@JoeLyman I do not understand who is the drunk guy you talk about ? All i know is that 6 x 7 negative is totally wasted with flat light , Black out background ,Amateur look and some ''pictures'' that are in same level as old lady with an old cell phone.

With 6x7 Pentax you will be out of Sync unless you use the 90mm old Pentax lens with leaf shutter.To much trouble to use anyway. Take a Hasselblad instead if you are planning portrait work with fill flash.

Use an incident flash meter like the seconic L 308, and bounce the flash off the cieling or a wall. Or better yet, use a softbox, gridspot or two!

FYI when using reflective/spot metering darker skin is below middle grey...what you said was more light was needed for darker skin which is the opposite of what is correct. Spot metering dark skin would put it 1/2 to 1 stop brighter than it actually is so you would close your aperture to compensate, not open it ... if someone is REALLY white skinned then they might be closer to zone 6 or one stop over middle gray so you would open the aperture to correct of the spot metered middle gray reading. That being said when using incident metering like you are here it is measuring the light falling on the subject so you don't need to compensate for anything except for some specific scenarios like maybe a really bright snow day where light is reflecting from unusual directions and could trick the reading. People get on their KZfaq rants about doing it right and then they don't know how to do it right :)

Joe, I'm amazed at the results of your Instagram survey. To me it is the end result (ie, the quality of the image) that is the most important. I make a point not to follow KZfaq photographers who consistently post bad images no matter how informative or entertaining they are. Yes, I like hearing how the image was made but if the example is a plain old snapshot that any 8 year old could take without thinking about composition and exposure, I won't subscribe. You notice I'm still a subscriber to your channel. That's because I like your images.

Thanks for the video. Your Portraits of Strangers reminds me of Richard Avedon's "In the American West" project. I have never used the 127mm on my RB67. For portraits, I use the 90, 140, 180, and 250mm lenses.

I’ve been doing film for close to two years now, digital photography for 10, I didn’t actually know that metering was for gray this whole time and this is really going to help with learning flash and exposure for film. Thank you!

Sorry mate, your explanation of ambient light metering is super confusing. Ambient metering measures the intensity of light falling on the area you have the meter. Subjects that are darker than neutral gray will be darker, while subjects that are lighter than neutral gray will be lighter. It offers a consistent measurement that is not affected by the tone or color of a scene.
@photozen8398
@photozen8398 Жыл бұрын
@6:17, if you get an incident (INCIDENT) reading like you did ( dome on , meter under your talent chin) you get the actual tonality of the skin, you do not need to lower your exposure for white skin nor increase your exposure for black skin, now what you are talking about with the grey card is reflective meter built in your camera or if you have a Minolta meter that reads flash ( REFLECTIVE) that what gives you the 18% grey ( your meter is nice you point it from your camera position, lens axis, to where you want to measure, like background, so on so forth)….Thank you very much for allowing me to comment on your channel .

It’s slightly more expensive than the SQ6. The design is definitely way better though. I guess it just depends on how much you value shooting instax with this camera. For me it’s been revolutionary.

Great roll! I disagree with the poll, I'm absolutely interested in how you create great images! You seem to have a unique talent for capturing special moments and a lot of your photos have a certain feel and quality that I can't quite articulate. I'm way more interested in hearing and learning about how you go about creating that than I am hearing about your gear or camera settings. It could be just where I'm at in my photography journey, but I'm interested to hear more about how you go about approaching people to ask for pictures. We chatted a bit about it on facebook and I completely understand your hesitancy to share about it. I'm just not confident about my approach yet and the very few approaches I have tried have been unsucessful, so I'm looking to improve. You're my favorite photographer, thank you for sharing everything that you do, I appreciate you! Have a great day man!

How’s the focus patch? And how easy is it to focus precisely? I’ve and used several Leica M and find the Nikon appealing but don’t want to be stuck at range focus.
@JoeLyman

It was pretty dim when I got it. I had the camera CLA’d and he brightened up the patch quite a bit. The only time I’ve struggled to nail focus was in extreme back lit scenes.

The shot of the meatball son is so good. Ooozing character. When you talk about shooting at box speed, does that mean setting your light meter to the ISO of your film and using that to set your exposure or are you talking about something else?
@JoeLyman
@JoeLyman Жыл бұрын
Exactly. There are some scenes that require you to over or underexpose the film. Like a backlit person for example. You almost always need to overexpose by a stop or so in order to get all of the details in their face. There are other variables, but this is generally true.
