Here in the UK, there is an accute shortage of club builders. At my local golf course the resident PGA Pro butchered my driver. ( I wanted him to shorten it by half an inch, but instead of cutting it off at the butt section he cut it of at the tip and it was then too wide to fit into the hozel. Undefeated he tried to grind the tip down in order to get it to fit into the hozel. The head came off after the first shot. He refused to refund my money and challenged me to meet him in court. Another player asked him to change the lie angles on his iron set. He did not have a lie angle adjustment tool and proceded to clamp them in a vice and wack em with a hammer, totally destroying a brand new set of golf clubs, when asked for a refund, he threatened violence. That's the level of technology and professionalism here in the UK!!!

The USGA legal club length limit is still 48 inches, but the tournament committee can use the optional 46 inch limit like the PGA tour has (stupidly) done. I also use the playing postion unless the club is close to the upper length limit. Mizuno includes the grip cap in the length. Most companies don't.

One-half dozen or the other. When I do my final wipe off of epoxy I dab a small amount of grip solvent on the paper towel. To me, this insures the club hosel and ferrule area are all nice and clean. Not sure if the practice is right or wrong but it seems to work well for me.

The only one thing you didn’t talk about with the Grips is that sometimes people like the tape thicker like me where my second hand is on the grip the lower hand I like to build it up like three down there because that’s just the grip that I like and sometimes it doesn’t wanna slide over and I’ve use the heat gun to warmed the end and also the solvent inside and then put it on put some on the club and some on the grip and then poured on like you said and then don’t stop shove it all the way on but it helps her to get over the gift the beginning part of your grip that you put on the club is warmed up a bit and it fountains it up a little so it’s slides on

It made me crazy was the first time I used shafting beads. I wasn't wearing my glasses while assembling and failed to notice the tiny gap between ferrule and hosel from the shafting beads. A minor incovenience but still a pain

Great video and explanation of epoxy. I have found most people don't understand ratios and tend to miscalculate when eyeballing the amounts of epoxy. I personally use a scale but that because I'm just OCD. Is there a reason you don't use the mixing tips with the 3M glue? yes it is an extra cost but, mixes the epoxy quickly and perfectly.

IMO the tips do add some precision but using them wastes the epoxy

Obviously, I'm doing something very different. When using a butane torch to heat up the hosel, the head is so hot I must wear a glove. You pull it off barehanded. Wow.

Is there ANY standard for head weight to shaft flex? I have an older set of irons with s300’s in them, but the old heads are 15-20 grams heavier than the new heads. So if I transfer them, won’t they be stiffer?
@dylanhannum7032
@dylanhannum7032 Жыл бұрын
Stiffness is only determined by the shaft, now what you are talking about is swing weight, 2 grams added to the head= +1 point ( example: D1 is nowD2 with added 2 grams to club head) 5 grams added to the butt end = -1 point (d2 is now d1 with 5 added grams to butt end.) -Custom Club Builder Puetz Golf Seattle

Duane this is a good how to start an argument question among clubmakers lol. I do too. From comments of golfer it’s about a 50/50 split. Some can live without and some cannot. My opinion is it makes a consistent golf club regardless

Duane…in the early advent of graphites and some very inexpensive steel shafts, spine align or FLO ( flat line oscillation) was deemed critical by custom club makers. As mfgrg quality improved, more OEMs routinely required the shaft mfgrs to include this. Some testing has been performed by some clubmakers Jim McC knows….and playability improvement is hard to measure. As metallic fibers have been introduced, to graphites, designs have become far more stable…and deformation has been reduced. Even in non labeled steels like KBS, I always check FLO, because it’s better todo than not, IMO.

Interesting tidbit I picked up about epoxy a while back is that the viscosity while curing follows a sigmoid-shaped curve, with the transition from liquid-gel-solid happening relatively quickly. I haven't built any clubs yet but I'm hoping I can pick up a decent set of blades that need new shafts or grips for cheap at a thrift store some time, and it's great to know what the proper resin/filler is and how exactly the length is measured.

After epoxy is used and has set up, does extreme cold harm or crack the epoxy. How many club fittings per week do you do? Do you feel that you are well listened to and then the customer goes with your opinion.

Two questions on gripping. 1) Do you also find mid-size grips harder to put on than standard size grips? Especially the Grip Master Kangaroo mid-size grip, that one is a nightmare to put on. Any tips? 2) I removed and re-used some quite old junior grips. Put them back on and some 12+ hours later (kept them in a room with a dehumidifier) some of them were still turning. Never experienced this before so I don’t think it’d an issue with my tape or solvent. Is it possible the grips are too old and after taking them off, they stretched out too much?
@McGolf
@McGolf Жыл бұрын
1) the kangaroo grips are problematic for a smooth install the last I did was a work out. If the grip was old and was on a bigger butt shaft or built up I’d also think the grip would not seat

Can you simply use the quick centre beads to fit a 0.355 shaft into a 0.370 hosel? Or do you have to use a shim?

Hi Jim, do you subscribe to the notion that, when measuring for length, both steel and graphite should be cut the same ( talking standard length here, ex 7i = 37”) or should graphite be cut 1/2” longer throughout the set?
@McGolf

Length is length regardless of the shaft material. YOu are putting in a a lighter shaft for a reason and a result will be a lower swing weight

Looking for help. Wanted to change shafts in a set of old Macgregor irons, graphite to steel. Tried to remove old graphite shafts, when pulling out they have essentially just ripped right at the top of the hosel. Tried drilling out but hitting metal about 5mm down in the hosel meaning no depth in the bore to put new shafts in. Anyone have any suggestions on what has happened or another option for getting the rest of the heads as normal?
@dylanhannum7032
@dylanhannum7032 Жыл бұрын
Graphite is brittle when introduced to heat, use a heat gun, you CAN NOT twist the club head to get it off a graphite shaft. It has to be a Parallel “pull” basically you need a shaft extractor. If not accessible you can cut the shaft off flush then boar the hosel ,start with a small drillbit and work your way up bigger, you’re hitting a swing weight it’s brass and a particular drill bit is needed or extractor, you can try to heat the hosel up with a propane torch sometimes the weight will come out on its own, but at best it will loosen epoxy and be more likely to slide out as you’re drilling. Use heat shield on hosel. But best would be to take them to a club builder. -Custom Club Builder Puetz Golf Seattle
