So from my research of the Sentinelese people I have learned that a while back they DID allow a group of researchers near. That groups would come by and float coconuts over from their boat, and the Sentinelese people would gather them as they floated to shore. Each time the team would get closer and closer, continuing to float Coconuts to them until one day a group of the Sentinelese people waded RIGHT out to the researchers boat where they grabbed the ENTIRE bag of coconuts and hauled it to shore. This was after several weeks I believe of contact. They then were allowed to shore on the island where the people showed them their lifestyle and got a basic understanding of how the island worked. The Sentinelese were cautious but non aggressive, yet always were armed during the visit. What happened was that AFTER the researchers left the Sentinelese got VERY VERY sick. It is unknown what they caught but it is believed that due to their limited contact to the outside world and our adaptation to the daily viruses and pathogens humans contain, something that the researchers had like a minor flu hit the Sentinelese. I don't remember the number but it was around 70% or more of the entire tribe was wiped out by this sickness, it literally killed whole generations of families on that island which is a big reason for the low numbers. They act aggressively towards ANY outsiders due to this traumatic event in their history, and the Indian government has banned travel there for both protection of us AND protection of the remaining Sentinelese. I believe it is mainly to protect them from us though if you read the law. But they are naturally hunters, not killers. They just want to avoid what happened, and MAY thing it was either on purpose and we will do it again, or some other reason linked to us.

@@chocolatecosmos1424 Incorrect. This was a first contact scenario and it is typical of first contact scenarios to approach in this way. No knowledge was there known of the Sentinelese and they were curious to chart them like they have every other uncontacted tribe. They were anthropologists so that is their job. Not until after that initial contact was it an issue.

I love two of the stories are about reptiles! I would probably pick croc island because you wouldn't have to go into the swamp. Use drones or whatnot to get views of them. Crocs are one of the few animals that see us as food outright. I keep snakes and love them, but an island filled with that many sounds too dangerous to navigate. Granted, unlike the crocs, the snakes are just being defensive. But it's a defense you're not likely to survive. Island #3: Nope. I'd go see the snakes first.

@dias2264

The name of the island explains how, it means "Island of the big fire". Almost 500 years ago, european explorers found this island, set foot in there and lost a considerable number of their crew for those snakes. Later they got back and take revenge by setting the whole island on fire. They succeded to burn the entire vegetation and almost all snakes died. So, for a long time, the island was snake free and this is when the lighthouse was built. Nowadays, under brazillian army protection, the local vegetation has fully recovered and the few snakes that survided that shaming event reproduced even more than before, resulting in this army of super venomous (and maybe now more fireproof) snakes on the 21 century version of this island. Infact those are the most deadly snakes in the world, they evolved with this super potent venom that almost instantly kills birds, and it is important that the bird falls near, improving the odds of eating before another snakes jump ahead and took their prey.

@@jasonhaynes2952 Brazil's mainland just happens to be the place where these snakes come from to live in this island. Their mainland ancestor actually lives in the forests of south america and can also kill a human with their venom, that is less potent but deadly as well. So, watching your step while visiting south america's forests will be more effective to keep you alive than putting fire in the island again... @@mithrandirthegrey7644 Don't agree with you there. Racism is a political and social construct created to oppress one group and uplift another based on phenotypical differences. Their survival mechanism has absolutely nothing to do with race and everything to do with INCOMING fear of ANY outsider, regardless to the incoming groups phenotype, nationality or color. If racism were, as you put it, a "primal human instinct", then why did the opposite happen most of the time? What's the opposite, you say? Going into an area and physically and forcefully retrieving another group of humans to use for your will and benefit. Hmm, that's not coinciding with your theory at all, maybe "racism" is not the correct word?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but....saltwater crocodiles don't need an experience like this to learn to see humans as prey. We already are and always have been prey to them. They are one out of only three animals known to actively and purposefully stalk and hunt humans. To eat them afterwards. Other predatory animals might kill you because you spooked them somehow and they feel like they need to defend themselves. Or they are really really desperate and will eat anything they can get their paws on to survive. Or you are just there at the wrong place at the wrong time (for you) and an easy meal to them. Saltwater crocs aren't that. We are simply prey to them. Easier to catch than a lot of animals on top of that. And they know it.

Only 1 person has ever been allowed to enter the forest by the tribe. It was a women. I wanna say she was from Asia, some kind of Dr. As sort of a peace offering she brought a whole shit ton of coconuts! And they actually welcomed her on her second visit yelling come friend or something like that. This was a long time ago and to this day she's the only outsider that's ever been successful entering that place, and leaving! Everyone else has died trying. Now they have boats surrounding the island making sure no one attempts it.

@SELİM ARDA OKTAY crocodiles and alligators are easy to kill, you just have to shoot them in the neck one time, and they die, or if you use a Barret, just put a couple holes through them, and the bullets will probably kill at least another croc or gator.

Since I did a bit of research on the Sentinelese a bit ago, I thought I might share some knowledge with anyone who is curious. In the very first contact with the Sentinelese, in 1867, an Indian merchant ship crashed onto the island. The 86 passengers and 20 crewmates stayed on the island for three days before the Sentinelese emerged from the forest and started attacking. Those who survived the attack fended off the Sentinelese with sticks and stones. While we can't know for sure what prompted the Sentinelese to attack. The second contact, in 1880, a British naval officer kidnapped six tribe members. When they came onto the island, they found a camp that was hastily abandoned, except for an elderly couple and four children. They took the six back to Port Blair. While the elderly got sick and died, presumably from lack of immunity from viruses the British carried, the children survived long enough to be dropped back off at North Sentinel Island with gifts. It is unknown if the children were also carrying disease and spread it to the rest of their tribe. But without a doubt, the kidnappings did not do us any favours in befriending the Sentinelese. In 1896, a Hindu convict fled on a makeshift raft to North Sentinel Island. While I don't know much about this encounter, the body of the convict was found a few days later. His body was described as having been "pierced in several places by arrows and it's throat cut". Starting at 1967, the Indian government performed dozens of surveys of the island. Triloknath Pandit was one of the people in these surveys. In the first survey, they performed a "gift dropping". While the Sentinelese did not kill anyone, they weren't exactly friendly either. They watched the group with their bows and arrows, ready to attack. On another visit, they gifted a live pig, which went unappreciated as it was immediately speared to death and buried in the sand. These surveys went on for years, but it was not a true waste of time. In 1991, The Sentinelese tribe waded out into the water next to the boat, and started exchanging gifts with Triloknath Pandit and his group. They made to active effort to attack Mr. Pandit, but he was still cautious not to offend them. However, Mr. Pandit got a got a little too close to shore on one occasion. When he did, a young Sentinelese boy gave him a funny look, took out his knife, and make a motion that he would cut the man's head off if he walked onto their land. I find this interesting because the Sentinelese tribe is not truly violent. They are willing to meet with outsiders on their own terms, but as soon as someone ignores those terms, they are no longer welcome.

Who is to say we are the basis of perfection or what a culture should be. Totally understood why Mr. B would call these people primitive, but it's essentially not true in the way we might think of the word. Great summary, haven't read anything on these people myself, but John Chao seems pretty brave to do what he did. He seemed not so well informed and a little rushed compared to any progress made in the last 2 centuries. He must've heard the Sentinelese weren't really connected to the world and wanted to share the Gospel. From Mr. Pandit's interaction it seems that their land is kind of sacred to them so maybe this is why they attacked John Chao. Maybe the land is off limits because of the horrible actions of the past, killing important elders and maybe even not letting the Sentinelese grieve/ deal with the bodies, but who would want to give back the dead... a whole other confusing tale. Who of us is afraid of the unknown? Especially when left alone, the unknown basically steal your family/ friends. Great of you to share this and epic stories, Mr. Ballen, and while I don't agree with your description on the Sentinelese, I give respect to your view and only wished to share a more expanded view on this people-group. Thanks for not always scaring me to death by producing really interesting content too, lol.

Additionally at one point there was a ship wrecked just off shore of the island, and the salvage crew sent to dismantle and salvage it said the sentinelese would approach to salvage metal from the wreck and never made any attempt to harm the salvagers. They just passively collected metal and existed in the same space and then went on their way.

@@unlearning_distance I wouldn't call John Chau brave. He was foolish. He deliberately went to this island knowing that it was prohibited by law. There had been documentation of this island and the history of contact people had with it but he decided to ignore all of that or simply not inform himself. After several blatant signs that they did not want to be contacted he ignored all of that and still kept forcing his way to the island. Even had they welcomed him he would have killed them by potentially spreading germs or diseases that their immune system cannot fight against. He ignored the advice of the fisherman. Bribed them into breaking the law just to satisfy his own self-righteousness. I'm a Christian myself and this is not the way to spread the gospel.
