👉 #1 Vicovation OPIA2 - $250

👉 #2 Street Guardian SG9665GC - $200
The camera to pick if you want something stealthier that has been proven to work in very hot environments. While the OPIA2 has gone through a summery without problems it doesn’t have the two years of solid performance the SG9665GC has.

👉#3 Thinkware F770 - $400
Our choice for two channel parked recording. It’s energy efficient with best of class video quality. Full review: • Thinkware F770 Review ...
SD Cards: Thinkware is VERY picky as to what SD cards work. Transcend // High Endurance cards do NOT work with the F770. We suggest buying Thinkware's brand or the Transcend 400X cards if you want to save money.
BlackBoxMyCar
Our recommended retailer for the F770 because they have extensive experience in hardwiring luxury vehicles. For example, some BMWs will spit out an error message if you tap the wrong circuit. I'm happy to admit where I'm not an expert, go ask them for hardwiring advice. Check out their Instagram to see some of the vehicles they've worked on: / blackboxmycar
As disclosure, we got the Blackvue DR650GW and the Thinkware F770 rear camera for free from them. Our recommendation is from watching their actions with customer service and dedication to the dash camera market over the years, not from the samples.
Use coupon code "CarCamCentral20" to get $20 off an order of $399 or more.

First time viewer... WOW!!! What detail... It's great you open up the products to take a look inside. Very detailed reviews. I'm a subscriber now. Keep up the great work and I look forward to future reviews! P.S. If I tell my friends about your selections... I'm guessing the links above in the description are affiliate links correct? I would want to be sure to tell my friends to come here first before hopping over to Amazon directly. ***Update*** I read the description again and you already answered. You ought to highlight a spot on each video description a Generic Link to Amazon. I buy a lot there and I can go through your link. I went to your "tip jar" on your webpage and pulled the link to my desktop. Thanks for all you are doing!

Bought an A119 just because of your videos. Can't wait to play with it when it is delivered this week. CORRECTION: you said the OPIA has the max temp limit of 65 degree when it is supposed to be 75 degree.

Thanks Choo! At 1:31 I said the camera is at 75°C at 1:58 I said I threw it in our thermal chamber at 65°C. Did I say 65°C somewhere else?

At 1:35 when you said at "65" degree C and 167 degree F, when it should have been "75". Other than that, everything is good. Just recently started watching your videos bc I'm interested in dashcam. Your videos convinced me to buy the A119 like I have mentioned before so thank you. Keep up with the videos. They are very good and informative.

I will consider this video before making my purchase (for my daughter's car), but I usually consult Consumer Reports for any purchases over $100. My biggest problem is finding a professional, in my area, to install it. Thank you for this video.

Go for it. I think they have no idea what they are talking about: www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/dash-cams-coming-to-a-dashboard-near-you/ I'm a fan of consumer reports but they did not do a good job with their recommendations.

I agree completely. Usually Consumer Reports does much better research-especially for such an important item. I felt so strongly about it that I wrote to them offering suggestions for their readers on how to correct this-visit your site- and Dashcam talk. Keep up the good work.

Retired Army With most of the cameras reviewed here, no 'professionals' are needed unless you want an (unlikely) insurance discount or are physically unable to install something. Most of the cameras can be plug and play using the suction adapters, a 12v outlet, and some pushing of wires into moulding or taping exposed wires out of the way. I gave my first camera to a neighbor's daughter after she was wrongfully ticketed for an accident. Literally took 10 minutes and 2 years later she is still using it. My current one took only 30 minutes simply because I had to run a cable to a rear camera. And frankly, CR is over-rated and have been for years, it's likely by the time you see a review of a product it will have a better successor in the channel. Glad you at least want one for your daughter's car, many younger drivers get the assumption of guilt these days. Thank you for your service.

Just found your channel today while, of course, looking for a good source on dash cams. I've watched 5+ videos, read several articles on your website and several posts on reddit. I must say I'm very impressed with your coverage. The effort you put into keeping information current with description edits and annotations, as well as, your response to comments is quite impressive. I feel so much more knowledgeable about dash cams now and I decided to try my hand at this tech with a A119 based on your recommendations (used Amazon link, BTW). Like I said, I was looking for a good source on dash cams. However, I would classify your information as a great source. I will definitely recommend your channel and website to others. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hi Andrew, Is there any power supply option for parking mode in order to prevent vehicle battery drain ? Perhaps a separate AA-battery option ? That would benefit to most of us as consumers by being a hassle-free option, and by being a more secure way to get it working I guess by getting rid of any potential wrong electrical installation also.
@Lam
@Lam 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, great question, you can get the Cellink-B which uses a more temperature safe lithium-iron phosphate material. It can be connected to your 12V cigarette adapter for an easy albeit slower 5A charge. It does not need to be hardwired. Andrew

Surprisingly hiding the cables for the rear dash cam on my Thinkware system was easier than working the wiring out for the primary dash cam. Pick up an auto trim removal tool kit off of Amazon or any auto parts store for $10 and you can press at the edge of the headliner and gently push the cables as you move to the back. Took all of 5 minutes in my 4Runner, and 4 of those minutes was working out the bracket for the camera since the 4runner rear window rolls down so couldn't simply stick on the glass.

Almost all vehicles will have a rear dome light, the one in my Frontier is less than a foot from the rear window. Dome lights should all have a constant 12v supply as you can activate them just by opening a door without the vehicle running or by pressing a button to activate them inside the vehicle. I wired my radar detector via the front dome light using a fused 12v-5v mini-USB adapter (with battery discharge protection) you can find on Amazon or EBay. It's tucked into the sunglass holder in the light fixture but could likely fit between the headliner and roof. A coat hanger can fish the wires under the headliner to the edge of the molding, almost completely concealing the wires. I haven't done the rear modification yet since I still have a 2ch camera as I'm very rural and don't need parked recording(unless my squirrels arm themselves). When I start traveling, I'd prefer the more urban friendly models and using separate front and rear cams. Keep in mind that this is a constant draw, BDP is a must. Sorry for the long post. Love the channel, recommend it to everyone; neighbors, friends, relatives, etc.
@EastCoastJeepSRT
@EastCoastJeepSRT 7 жыл бұрын
TheOriginalCP9 It's actually pretty simple. They give you enough cable to work it up and around your headliner, around the door jams, and back to the rear window or hatch. Any excess left over you can tuck in the headliner.

Yes, would love to see this review for a back-up camera application. My 2016 MX-5 (Sport version) has a proprietary audio unit that does not have video inputs. Nor is there the option to add a double-din audio unit. So in order to use a backup camera I need to either install a rearview mirror with a video input (Auto Vox seems to have a clean version that substitutes for the OEM mirror (no clip-on). I'd rather have one with auto-dimming and a dashcam built in (with collision warning) but I think that's asking way too much. Thank yo for your reviews. They are very informative :)

OPIA2. I think for most larger vehicles it's nice to have a rotating camera to get better coverage. If you're a professional driver then definitely the OPIA2 as it'll be used a lot and you want to document any road rage, etc to keep your CDL clear.

hi, i am looking for a feature which is not yet found in carcams, i hope you can notify me when such feature avails., or else contact the manufacturers regarding this feature below which i believe will be in high demand. Feature description: single button auto replay of last 5 mins/10mins/15mins. Commonly an incident occurs, and i need to check what happened in the last 10 mins for example. The current technology requires me to fumble the tiny keys on the carcam to access various menus, to dig up the last 5 mins recording! Sad!

I think it's about looking ahead at what to use for the year instead of looking back at the end of the year at "what was." "What was" doesn't matter as much in the world of electronics because everyone's looking forward to the next greatest thing, and these were the best up to that point.

Is street guardian can be constantly used on motion detection mode or it has to be turned on and off every time you start driving? And is it a good practice to live your dash cam on recording 24\7? Hi Andrew- first congrats on a really well done review with your split screen image comparisons, good narration and superb audio and video. Lots of effort put into to making this video. Are you a moonlighting television shooter? I'm researching my first purchase of a dash cam, so I have some questions: 1. What is the largest video card you can use in the Opia2, 2. What's the max recording time? 3. While rolling and recording, on playback, is there much screen breakup or pixilation? I want to record video from a trip and use it in a blog video, rather than using my DSLR. Thanks in advance for your reply, and for the good work. I've subscribed.

Hey Frederic, thanks! I have no official training, I just study a lot and think through my shots. 1) 128GB cards are officially supported 2) At 1440P which is recommended you'll get 11 hours at 128GB. They are large files. 3. Nope, it uses a high bitrate for dashcams at 26mbps. It has the least amount of pixellation of the cameras we've tested. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use this camera for a trip as the colors can be somewhat off. It's not designed for cinematographic purposes but rather for functionality in capturing license plates and other important details. Thanks for the sub and for commenting! -Andrew

Great vid. I log a lot of miles. On the Opia2 how much battery does it use during parking mode? I'm asking so I can have a rechargeable battery hooked up to it so as not to drain the main car battery. Car recharges > lithium ion battery pack>runs the parking mode of camera. Thanks

Hey Andrew! I love the dash cam review videos you make. They are very informative. I don't have a dash cam yet.....can't quite afford one but am saving to buy a good quality camera for around 150 bucks. I have a question; I was wondering if you can make a comparison video between the Viofo A119S vs Viofo A119 Pro? So far, i'm leaning more towards the Viofo A119S for now. Thank you again and great work!

I still think now, after watching this, two a119's is going to be cheaper than 1 ~$400 camera with reduced video quality. Great video by the way, I love the dual view one versus the other it was exactly what I was looking for and you have really helped me get closer to a decision, even if this video is 10 months old, its the best one Ive found so far.

We're not sure when that video is coming. The Viofo A129 review is coming out soon, but in the meanwhile you check our Best Dash Cam article here: carcamcentral.com/guide/best-dash-cams-car-dvrs-black-boxes-of-2018 Our top three cameras right now would be the Viofo A119V2 - single channel, the Viofo A129 - dual-channel, and the Street Guardian SG9663DC if you want a premium camera with great heat resistance and a great company behind it. The Blackvue DR900S offers the best video quality on the market while the Thinkware F800 Pro will give you the best parking mode features. -Rolands

I spoke too soon. I just found that the rear cam stopped recording in January & is now completely dead. I ran the power cable from the cabin fuse box under the headliner to the rear...it was easy. The caps look fine so I'm unsure about method of failure. I can't figure out how to pull the circuit board without causing damage. If I find the problem, I'll report back.

Thanks Don. The Thinkware is a good choice for a stealthier dual channel camera. One channel the Mobius is the smallest. You can grab it in a capacitor instead of lithium in batteries for better reliability. www.mobius-actioncam.com/store/products/mobius-dashcam-package-stealth/ The A119 might be worth considering as well.

Great and informative video as usual. Thank you. However, if one decides to stick with one camera like the OPIA2, wouldn't that be enough to offset a need for a second camera in the back considering it can swivel around? It may not have the best video from the distance from the front or back, but it may be good enough in a court case if needed. Do you agree?
@Lam
@Lam 6 жыл бұрын
Hey David. I can only partly agree with that statement. Even though 360 degree rotation can also record the rear view of your car it is more meant to record action on the side of your car. The biggest obstacle obviously is the distance and as you mentioned it can be just "good enough". A separate rear camera will be a better choice regardless because it is meant to be there and record what you need from the back of your car. Also, while you have rotated your camera to record the back view you are missing out on whats happening in front of your car so you can miss out on some crucial details which may be important in a court case. -Rolands

@Lam

I had a question about that as well. If it vibrates the materials in the car, nothing you can really do. An adhesive mount camera like the A119 will help a lot as it'll be more solid compared to the rubbery and longer suction mounts.

Thanks for the review. Wondering if you have one for dashcams with driver assistance features (e.g. lane departure, collision avoidance)? Or if these features are better handled by a separate device. Thanks again!
@Lam
@Lam 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stormy! Neither actually, I don't think any devices have good driver assistance features, the technology isn't there yet. The only good implementations I've seen are baked into the vehicle and supported with useful technology like Lidar. Testla is a good example. Everything else is just a waste of time and attention (IMO).

+Car Cam Central Great video! What would you recommend for extreme cold and good night vision? Living in Alaska we can have temperatures lower than -50F/-46C. Also, in winter months I drive to work in the dark and drive home in the dark. I know the cabin will eventually warm up to a temperature that a camera can operate at. If I had a camera that easily detached then I can take it in when I am at home. But since I need parking mode, that won't work for me when I am parked other places i.e. work , store or a movie theater.
@Lam
@Lam 7 жыл бұрын
At those conditions I'd consider taking in your camera as the condensation on warmup will be a bummer for most electronics. I'd recommend a camera with a conformal (waterproof) coating but I haven't found one yet. I haven't heard of any electronics crapping out because of the cold but it will take longer to start up. I have no recommendations for parking mode in any environment that cold as most batteries will have a significantly reduced energy output if they'll work at all. These are really extreme conditions and there's nothing I've seen on the consumer market designed for that.
@rawbeartoe_AK

Watched your Vicovation OPIA2 video segment and looked at its feedback on Amazon. There were too many very negative reviews about the unreliably of this dash cam. Also, GPS is an extra cost on top of an all ready high $250 price. Thanks for your videos.
@Lam
@Lam 7 жыл бұрын
There actually wasn't that much on the reliability. Most people had SD card related issues and they didn't know it. The OPIA2 has the highest bitrate of all the cameras on the market at 26mbps and it's no surprise the camera stopped working for them. Add to the fact that the error notifications sucked at the time, not much you can do about it. The Trojan 1-star review was just ridiculous.

Hi, I decided on a good dashcam and your review for the OPIA2 seems to convince me. Especially paired with your other video on how to hide cables. Question: How easy it to unmount the dashcam when I'm parked to put it into the glove thing? My current GPS (Garmin) is just a clip, is ti similar? Or will I spend few minutes each time I park to mount/unmount? Thanks!

Hey Polopollo, sorry about the late reply. I found it pretty easy to unplug the USB cables and slide the camera out of the regular mount. On the quick release mount its even easier, you just lift the tab and it pulls out very easily. With the quick release mount it takes seconds to remove. There are, many Korean dash cameras with a large LCD screen can show a blown up rear view. Out of curiosity, have you ever used or plan to use/review the Z-edge Z3? It's about the same price as the A119 and has swivel capability. Not sure if it has batteries or capacitors though. I see a lot of great reviews on this from users and reputable review sites, yet I haven't seen a review on your channel yet and was hoping you might be planning one soon. Love the videos...thanks!
@Lam
@Lam 7 жыл бұрын
Hello me. While the Z-Edge Z3 is a popular camera and recommended by The Wirecutter there are two cameras that have better value for the same or better price. The Viofo A119 has significantly better video hardware and uses capacitors which have better reliability compared to the Z3. The A119 only lacks 360° rotation. If you need 360° rotation the Yi is the better value. For $30-$40 less it has WiFi and only slightly worse video quality. We’d only pick the Z3 if it was on sale for the same price as the Yi as the company has a reputation of good customer support. Our upgrade pick is the OPIA2 , which completely blows away the Z-Edge Z3 in every way that matters. It has far better video quality and reliability. The OPIA2 uses capacitors and is rated for an operational temperature of 75°C vs 60°C on the Z3. The OPIA2 also has an automatic parking mode compared to the manual one on the Z3 which can cause you to lose footage if you forget to turn it off.
