Another great video Andrew. 4 years since update. Anything new? Also, what's your recommendation on reformatting dash cam cards every few months? Does reformatting cause premature wear?

Problem: more runoff = less perculation = flooding. Solution: INCTREASE PERCULATION, NOT speed of drainage!!! Idiotic "solutions" like increasing drainage is NOT the solution...

This video is extremely valuable for us here in Brazil 🇧🇷 . We faced the most devastating flood ever in the south of the country, and I believe events like these (heavy rains) are going to be more common. Thank you for your research and work!

We have pipes. And dedicated flooding areas around the river. Not just for rain, but also tides. One of them was originally planned as harbour extension, but that plan was scrapped and the area was repurposed for flooding. The century flood of 1946, when a storm surge paired with the spring thawing, helped a lot with overthinking water management, but the flood in 1981 was crucial with designing new flood plains.

Well I know when my 1994 Chevy Corsica stopped being safe. When it was brand new... mine was like 10 or 15 years old when I got it. This doesn't end with me getting in a crash or anything, it blew the engine. But that thing was rated at a 1 star rating for the driver and 2 for the passenger. For 1994; it was off the market in 1995 because it didn't meet the side impact standards at all.

If there were more stringent requirements to get a driver license, with better training and mandatory retraining every 5 years, traffic accidents would decrease probably at the same rate or even higher than putting all of that money into better barriers.

Besides the weight, the biggest Factor to crashes is the differences in the vehicle structure height. Bumper mismatch can make a safe car very dangerous to other people, or a safe car useless to its occupants.

16:37 "My car wasn't designed for this test, which is why it went from being safe to having a dangerous flaw overnight" This reasoning is so flawed, I mean does it even need an explanation?

This video is bullshit the 940 is still by far the safest car in the video. The old red block Volvos have steel in the firewall to prevent the motor from being pushed into the cab. I have personally seen pictures of the same car in a head on collision with a suburban and the metal in the firewall did its job. The occupants of the Volvo walked away with barely any scratches.

As an industry veteran, I've been waiting forever for the right market pressures to be in place, for all modern tire testing to be conducted with the tires at both new, and 50% worn tread depth conditions. It's always seemed unwise to only test them at the wear status they'll spend the very least amount of their service life at. We must demand more.

We need something like this in RS. Digging a hole with some grass and pipes, how hard (and by hard I mean costly, because apparently doing stuff for people's safety is always about price and not social good) can it be?

One problem of highway engineering is counterintuitive. "Clear zones" make sense on highways, but they are often implemented on suburban and urban streets (looking at you Florida), and when drivers see a wide road with few obstacles on the shoulder, they drive more quickly.

Your reference to Ralph Naders book, is without any context... he was going after the Corvair, which by the time his book was published, the safety problems had already been solved... he was a frothing at the mouth idiot during his time...

I just upgraded from a 2007 to a 2018 car and the change in technology is huge. Back up camera with cross traffic sensors, the blind spot sensors, the warnings for approaching a stopped vehicle, lane departure etc. I consider myself a safe driver, but it's pretty incredible what the tech can do now to make it even easier to be safe, and prevention is always the best safety.

In Australia we get floods that none of this would stop. I worked with a local railway and a train crew were flown back. For 160 km 100 miles they could not see a farm fence post either side of the plane. Water was at least 3 to 4 feet or more deep over 100s of 1000s of square miles of land on what is knwn as flood plains. Ground is level as a table top almost. Good luck holding that back
