The most ironic part about the first tale is that not going to jail reformed him far more than his sentence actually would have Edit - Ive spent a whole year now getting responses from guys who clearly didnt read my first post in the replies I shall repeat it here: "Nobody is arguing that the entire concept of prison should be banned. I was using the story to point out how shit the American prison system is at reforming offenders" You can all stop accusing me of wanting to let all criminals, no matter how severe, get off Scott free.

But we know he's a very rare case. More commonly, more businesses would be robbed if a person is not sent to jail. People don't usually "turn their life around" after they commit armed robbery. Society is much safer with those violent criminals in jail.

Guananteed if he ended up in prison he wouod become a habitual re-offender! All u learn in prison is how to become more of a criminal, to not trust the system and develop a hatred for authority. Not to mentiom the lifetime mental health problems you suffer. Too bad prisons are more focused on punishment than rehabilitation. But thats how industrial prison complex works and how these privatized prisons make $$. Its the revolving door that keeps them in business. This man was successful in life BECAUSE he didnt soend those 11 years behind bars like an animal.

In the first story I think the judge did the right thing... It wasn't his fault that they didn't come pick him up. and besides that if he actually stayed out of trouble that whole time and became a better man it would be a serious mistake to throw him in jail at that point. It would have been no different than breaking a fixed man all over again

@NYyankeeboi Too many. There's too many that either weren't talked about enough or at all (both not found out and that never got media attention) alone. Innocent until proven guilty is no longer the philosophy. It is solely a legal 'term' that is used to help a small minority; then lawyers and judges point to and say "Look the system works!" (More judge than lawyer issue ofc). The system is not just fucked. It's absolutely broken. Like every other civilized culture, rehabilitation should be the goal - not punishment. Private prisons are to thank: which has capitalism to thank... Yay, USA??!? We're number 1 (I believe solely in incarcerated people, what other relevant stat. Please. Someone, please make me happy and let me know i dont live in a shithole [However, us citizens are still privileged. I will always acknowledge/recognize that. But I will strive for better. Prison makes more criminals rather than reform them. They give those who could have changed a hopeless dead end life and those who couldn't change deeper into criminality by introducing them to their "associates". And this man was sentenced 13 years while if a white guy did the same he would have been given community service.

The cold and wet of the storm is probably the reason she lived through the high altitude lack of oxygen. “Not dead till your warm and dead.” Is a phrase on ambulances. Cold can reduce oxygen consumption in the brain essentially preventing anoxic brain damage/death. There are Records of people surviving falling into frozen lakes for hours underwater when revived properly.

Huge props to Eva’s team for leaving the radios on over 45 minutes after seeing her sucked up into the sky, just in case. It’s same-same respect to both. Respect for nature’s magnificent power to keep her aloft so long - a cloud made tangible is quite a colossus to behold; while equally respecting their teammate’s tenacity and ability to ride that ride and come out alive. “We’ll leave the radio on, mate, you just let us know when you’re finished tickling the bellies of the gods.”👌

@@electrictroy2010Maybe they don't normally leave the radios on all the time, to preserve the batteries. Like, maybe the protocol is to check in once every hour or something. OTOH, you'd expect the ground crew to have a radio in the car/truck that doesn't have battery limitations.

The theory about the paraglider is that due to the low temperature and her losing consciousness, her body and brain went on "stand by" mode, consuming almost no oxygen at all. This effectively protected her from long-term brain damage and death.

Would it be possible that the updraft brought oxygen with it, so that the air above the storm had a higher oxygen content than would be expected for that altitude?
@therealdeal3672
@therealdeal3672 3 жыл бұрын
That actually makes perfect sense about the theory of how the paraglider survived. Similar to when someone who's drowned in an icy lake, can sometimes be revived. And she would be having more oxygen intake then someone underwater. But you're right the low temperature along with her lower consumption of oxygen, when she passed out, is what saved her life. And regarding the question as to whether the updraft would bring oxygen with it, it wouldn't be enough to make a difference the air is too thin at that altitude. It was the cold temperature and her unconscious state that reduced her body's need for oxygen, temporarily.
@emmanotsostrong
@emmanotsostrong 3 жыл бұрын
@@minerat27 The air at 32,000 feet is not “deoxygenated” or anything like that. The composition of the atmosphere that high is pretty much the same as it is at the surface. The problem is that the air pressure is so low that the amount of oxygen in each breath is not enough to sustain normal human life. The theory stated above is that with her body in this “standby mode,” the small amount of oxygen per breath was enough to keep her alive.

People have been known to survive drownings and similar events when they were extremely cold. You are more likely to survive drowning in cold water than warm. My guess is that this is how Ava survived her asphyxia. Her body temperature dropped, slowing down all metabolic activity esp. in her brain, and that prevented her death. That and of course, not getting struck by lightning or a 737 flying over the storm.

Hey cool fact of the case is that, it being so cold and the fact that she fell unconscious most likely is the only reason she is alive. When you are unconscious especially in a situation such as this one your body doesn’t need nearly as much oxygen to survive for extended periods of time, along with the below freezing temperatures that also slow many bodily functions that more than likely aided in keeping her alive especially because of the altitudes that she reached she wouldn’t have been able to survive more than 10 min that high up without any special breathing equipment. This is not to mention that fear and stress force you to use more oxygen and adrenaline also plays a role in your reserves.

This story reminded me of a pilot, perhaps on a British airways flight, who was sucked out of a broken cockpit window. Amazingly an air hostess, who was in the cockpit at the time, managed to grab hold of his foot. She held onto him as he lost conciseness due to lack of oxygen. The other pilot descended into a more favourable atmosphere for life and the man somehow managed to survived this. Crazy!

True... also, the fact that he was living and working meant that he was contributing positively to society and paying taxes. Wonder how she did survive?. I guess her breathing stabilized and was extremely minimal given that she was unconscious. She likely wasn't breathing anywhere close to what she would be had she been awake and in total fear and adrenaline. She's basically asleep and thus very very calm with small breaths. Sometimes organisms or more "stuff that can kill them" aids one another in incredible ways. I no of more than one car accident victim, that was hurt so bad, that there was no realistic chance to survive until help could arrive, let alone before a treatment starts to help. But then those people went into shock. Untreated shock is deadly itself because it basically slows down the whole organism until it stops working, but it can be treated fast and effectively so in those cases lives were saved because a shock slowed down the bleeding out through wounds that otherwise would have been deadly. Once I read an article about a woman who was taking a walk was her neighbor, when she fell in a really old well (what was left of it) and because the ground next to it collapsed when she fell in she got buried alive. When her friend realized that she couldn't get her out and might even make the situation worse by trying to dig with bare hands she made sure to find that place again and ran to get help. After they got her out and to the hospital the case was investigated, just to make sure that it was really an accident. They discovered that by the density of the earth she was buried under and the given space it was kind of a miracle that she was even found alive, concisus but alive and when the doctors said that she was even highly expected to make a FULL recovery the mystery deepens because there was no way that this small "cave" she was caught in for hours could hold enough oxygen that makes that possible. But the pulmonologist came up with a very "earthly" explanation. The woman had a chronical lung disease that resulted in her lungs being less efficient getting oxygen out of the breathing air. Doing no sports, she never knew that. But that made it possible to last longer with the same amount of oxygen as a healthy person in the first place and when she went unconscious the oxygen she did breathe in could be used more efficient (for example a person who is in distress and close to hyperventilating is way less efficient as a person that stays calm, talking, even thinking.. all that leads to needing more oxygen. So basically she was alive and well thanks to a lung disease she didn't even know she had. When I got my Husky from those who rescued him he was badly dehydrated so we put him on an i.v. When he reached a healthy level of hydration he started to bleed through the nose, unstoppable, we had to narcotize him, and treat the bleeding nostrils with a substance that forces the blood vessels to astringe. Doing his blood work it showed that he must have a birth defect or so that lead to significant lack of thrombocytes so he wasn't a "bleeder" in the usual sense when the system of blood clotting is broken. But with that low thrombocytes his body didn't have the ability to close of wounds or rifts so a sneeze that brakes a blood vessel that is a little too big to just be cut of while healing he would bleed, same with wounds. When I brought him home he kind of "explained" me why he was even alive. There are ways to treat that, but he was taken from an owner that chained him up for years and didn't even care for the basics so it seems "unlikely" that he had treated such a blood disease. The answer was handed to my by the dog. That dog didn't know how to drink. He knew how to lick dew from grass and stuff.. but a water bowl was first nothing he understood at all, and after he understood how and that he could drink it he just emptied any bowl of water out until he vomited and the went for more. He had to LEARN how to drink. But it gave a sad explanation for the question how he could be alive.. He wasn't just dehydrated when he arrived to start his new life with me (I work in an animal hospital and couldn't get the day of, so a friend picked him up at the airport and brought him to me at the clinic what turned out to be the best thing) chained in some yard on Mallorca left to mostly fend for himself (he was great and determent when it came to hunting insects, that musk have been a big part of his "diet") he was kind of all the time in some stage of dehydration. His blood got thicker so it couldn't just pour out of blood vessels ruptured by sneezing, coughing or stuff.. so he survived because his owner nearly let him starve and die oft thirst. In those years his body kind of find some kind of "balance" in this and when we rehydrated him, we kind of broke a dam his body had build up. And yes of course there was organ damage because of all the malnutrition and dehydration. But he was alive what he would have never been if his owner hat given him a nice bowl of water often enough. His organ problems were treatable and we had a few great with this dog that was loving and always so happy. He didn't got to get really old BUT he had 5 years with us and I dare to say those years were good for all of us. So if this story is accurate (some stories get bigger and "more" with every time they are told) it is likely that all the stuff she went through turned out in such strange supports, like "getting unconscious because of that hypothermia set her in a situation that slowed her organism down so the lack of oxygen could be tolerated better and longer as it was possible in a conscious person that is not "close to be frozen solid hypothermic". Organisms have strange ways to stay alive and sometimes those ways are amazing.
