@@dakotathacker3821 I was locked up 4 days after being taken against my wishes by a sheriff deputy. The first day, there wasn't room at the mental hospital, so they kept me strapped to a gurney for over 12 hours in our local hospital ER. It was miserable. Next time I feel suicidal, I sure as hell won't be calling to talk to someone now that I know how they handle it. Thank god, I *didn't* have good insurance, so I got out! I met people there at the hospital who had been there for months because their insurance pays well. The only dangerous people I saw there were wearing uniforms and had name badges. Universal health insurance for all citizens, like they have in every industrialized nation but ours, could solve that!

Happens more often than people realize. My cousin was sentenced to 45 years for "Ghost drugs". An inmate killed another inmate. Instead of putting the one guy in solitary they put every guy including my cousin who was on that cell block in solitary for 2 years. My cousins letters became ineligible after a year. He was losing his mind. Luckily he was transferred to a different prison and he is doing better now but he was supposed to be released 3 years ago but they keep "misplacing, losing" his paperwork...........The system is corrupt.

I know! I have a history of mental illness, a few suicide attempts when I was a teen & 1 when I was in my twenties (I’m 43 now) but I was diagnosed with anxiety, depression & PTSD. If I went through what they guy went thru I would have probably gone insane permanently. Again, when I was much younger I did something stupid & was arrested & because I was arrested during a Labor Day weekend I was kept in jail for 5 days waiting to see the judge until he came back from the long holiday break. So I was kept in a cell at the same jail where they book you. The cells there are single cells & since people usually aren’t there long, it’s basically solitary confinement because they are single cells & you don’t get to leave your cell at all. Not even for a shower because they don’t have showers there. So for 5 days I was alone in a cell, fed the same crappy McDonald’s food for breakfast, lunch & dinner. I only got 1 phone call when I first got arrested. They didn’t even give me a bar of soap let alone a wash cloth! Couldn’t brush my teeth. I was having suicidal thoughts just from the 5 days of total isolation. They wouldn’t even give me a Bible to read. I had nothing but a thin foam type of blanket (so you couldn’t tear it and make a noose). This wasn’t because of my mental illness history, it was this way for everyone. It was the worst 5 days of my life. I learned my lesson I’ll tell you that! But it is inhumane & cruel to isolate people. I cried & prayed and had some terribly depressing thoughts when I was there. I just thought I’d tell you how awful 5 days was, I don’t know how this guy survived 2 years. I feel so bad for him. How they can legally do that to someone blows my mind. Unbelievable!

When the nurse called into the radio station to say that water intoxication could kill, Steve Maney replied saying that "They signed releases so we're not responsible, okay?". Regarding the 3rd part, I've been in solitary confinement for 17 days (I wasn't in the brig for anything serious, but I got into a brief physical altercation with another prisoner at one point, shoving him against a wall (he deserved it), in front of two guards), and it broke me. I was friends with a few of the guards, but even they weren't allowed to talk to me. We weren't allowed to sleep during the day, and if you were caught nodding off they'd add an extra day to your time in solitary. I learned to sleep with my eyes open, sitting up. You also weren't allowed to write anything, or read anything other than religious books (since they couldn't legally deprive you of that). I read the New Testament twice. I ended up having visions. I had zero social interaction and began hallucinating eventually. I became convinced that there was a demon behind my heating vent and that if I didn't pace my cell clockwise for a specific amount of times per day, it would come out and attack me. I'm still dealing with the after effects 25 years later. Solitary confinement is a horrible thing to do to a human being and should be outlawed. It was, so far, the worst thing that has ever happened to me and caused permanent psychological damage. It is psychological torture. When I hear of anyone being in solitary for months, or years, I cry. It's absolutely horrifying.

Like prison is ‘supposed’ to be for punishment and reformation. But so much of the prison system only puts value on the punishment aspect. And as a result, people come out of prisons worse than they went in. Either they are stuck in therapy for the rest of their lives or end up committing another crime. And people wonder why people say that prison systems as they are now don’t work. And the way prisoners are treated by guards etc. With little or no respect. It’s horrible.

I think it's simply the fact that prison conditions are inhumane in general and they don't know or care about dealing with mental illness, in a lot of prisons they don't care what reason you're there for, you're a prisoner and that's that. It's a place void of empathy or care about well-being, which might be well deserved when you're dealing with actual criminals. The treatment he received does not match the severity of his crime, but definitely plenty of prisoners receive similar treatment every day, we just don't empathize with them because we feel they deserve it.

Guy with DWI: Could have killed an entire family DJ: Negligent...NEARLY impossible to prove there was gross negligence(which is required to prove negligent homicide of involuntary manslaughter which is the most I think anyone could reasonably argue he could be charged with)... Meaning it's something no REASONABLE person would do...and it also is inferred if not implicitly stated in each states laws that you're dealing with someone who has no agency. A babysitter who doesn't pay attention to a child...a parent who leaves their child in a hot car. And even then, those are so RARELY charged as prosecutors have the prosecutorial discretion to use common sense and most parents are punished more by that death than any prison sentence would accomplish. What's more, they paid the man 15.2 million dollars. Meaning...that's not how the Justice System is SUPPOSED to work. It was THAT out of the norm that they gave him more money than people who spend 10 years in prison when they're not just wrongly imprisoned, but imprisoned with malicious intent(ie, prosecutorial misconduct, police fabricating evidence or ignoring other reasonable suspects...etc...etc...). Turn it around, say the drunk driver killed someone and say, "they didn't arrest the drunk driver, but they arrested the guy who had people drink excessive amounts of WATER?" And you'd say the Justice System is incompetent.

@@hollystiener16 no she wasn't trying to impress her kids, she was struggling and was hoping to win this for them as a gift! Plus if you trust the people holding the competition, you trust they wouldn't do anything to harm you! Not everyone has an idea when something is seriously wrong with their body! I don't think its fair to say she needs to accept responsibility for her death because she trusted their intentions! In my opinion they are responsible because this would not have taken place without them! It was their responsibility to be aware of anything that could possibly go wrong and they didn't do that at all.. and were negligent after receiving the warning call from the nurse! Again, I'm pretty sure is she would have thought they were holding a competition that would've been dangerous at all I'm sure she would've stayed away!!! She was trying to give something to her kids she couldn't afford and once she started feeling bad and they didn't stop it, she told herself she could be uncomfortable but not to give up! Cause I truly think she thought that's all it was.. Had they did their research this would've never happened! Or could she have waited a while for stores to restock on sold out items--- like all stores do. *I know this is a crazy concept, but sometimes you need to look out for yourself, and not depend on rando disc jockeys to keep you alive.* Why are parents so scared to tell their kids bad news? Is it REALLY bad news? I mean like ALL sold out items in our country--- they get restocked. She couldn't simply tell her kids: "They are sold out right now, we'll get one when they come back."
