Loved this video! Crafting a book blurb definitely feels way more complicated than writing the actual book and I think a lot of it comes down to the amount of time we spend reading books vs. blurbs. Reading a blurb takes only a moment. Experiencing the actual story takes hours or days. (We're also more emotionally invested in the story, which helps us remember it better.) Our brains have more time to absorb story structure than we do blurb structure. Writing the blurb isn't actually more difficult than the book, we just have less experience with them and the unfamiliar can be scary/daunting. Even though a lot of what you said feels like common sense advice, it can be hard to know where to start when you're facing something that feels more like a mountain than a molehill. Videos like this take away the I-don't-understand-how-so-I-can't-do-it mindset and make it so much easier to get started/keep going. I really appreciate the time you put into these because they make the whole publishing process a thousand times more approachable.

As someone who has haunted booktube for 3 years, I have to say: this is an EXCELLENT synthesis of writing a book blurb. Wow! Thank you, thank you. This will replace my current 4 links with one superb one. I am trying my hand at a fantasy novel. It's for an older audience maybe than yours, but I think all your advice applies. This is great.

A suggestion for your blurb. "Jezebel has to keep her gift secret, or forsake it for eternity. When her friends discover a portal to the human world, she takes the chance to explore her powers in this other world. Little did she know her secret would be betrayed, by someone in her circle. Whispers of rumours is how it started, then turns to demands as she is compelled to transfer her powers to her aggressor. How can Jezebel repulse this assault? Who is against her, and why?"

Love the video and the tips! So helpful. One thing about blurbs that I go against the grain with as a reader is if a blurb starts with credentials of author I skip over it and don’t care. I just want to read the description to see if the story seems compelling. Doesn’t matter to me if the author is a New York Times best seller

Symbolism means everything. if she could tell us more, which Shes is capable of; I see suggestions in the border; she chose the leaves and gnarly wood to give it this 'ancient' appeal and a depth in the pictures also says ancient and mysterious. Just imagine if the great old codex's had Microsoft.

Hi Bethany, your KZfaq videos are very immersive and enjoyable. Could you do a video on how authors can write an effective reference/recommendation letter for a beta reader whose feedback they found useful? Maybe show a sample of such a letter? This would help unpaid and paid beta readers to build up a portfolio and also motivate them to give it their 100% when giving an author feedback. Have a great day 🎉💜🍃Ciaoni

Do you have a video of how to get past that "oh crap I lost it" phase? I have a bad mental habit of completely loosing my story I'll be on a roll and have to stop to like eat or sleep and when I go back to writing I got nothing and can't remember where I was going at all and even rereading any of my notes or the already written part doesn't help "spark" my memory Any help would be great it's very frustrating

I have a question. Wouldn't it be better to end it at "except someone does" that way you don't give away that it was someone she trusted instead of say a another jin she didn't know?

That’s a cliffhanger for sure, but it didn’t feel like enough to make a reader care, if that makes sense?

I've learned a lot listening to your videos, even though I neither read nor write in your genre. Two things struck me about this blurb. You refer to JINN and Jinni. You assume the reader understands those words. I don't. Could you add a couple explanatory words, like "magical world" or something that defines JINN, right after the word? The other thing was the cliffhanger. Why can't Jezebel live without her innocence? Doesn't everyone lose their innocence in one way or another? I can understand the problem with losing her freedom, but innocence didn't work for me. If the book is already printed, and can't be changed!! - please ignore everything I said! Again, I've learned so much from your excellent videos.
@simonwoodward-pe8uv

Not sure I'm with you on your blurb example @4.51 simply because you reference "Jinn" or "Jinni". How is a new reader going to know what that is? And if they can't know, then I would suggest that the new reader would lose interest, and put the book back on the shelf, virtual or otherwise. I may delete my comment after seeing your video through to the end, let's see.

My hook for my story "MATTHEW REYNOLDS, AGE 40, FATHER OF FIVE, MURDERED BY AN AGENT OF RASR" Then my following two sentences before the official synopsis: "Two years later, Kurt Reynolds has been sent off to the finest military school in the country of Sayleth. What adventure possibly awaits him there?" (I just published book 1 and working on the sequel :D)
