What do they pay per pound at the auction ?

I'd say about 10, 8 ewes and 2 rams.. starting with too many and not having enough knowledge could lead to losing alot of them due to different issues sheep have this was our problem when we first started out and you'd be surprised at how much your flock would grow in a year

I’m getting into sheep myself, so I’m curious what your landscape is like. Most sheep breeds do better with grass than goats, which really thrive best on forbes and brush. You can have either animals for fiber, meat, or milk, but the personality and behavior of sheep and goats are quite different. Consider also the scale of your farm 5-10 years down the line, how many animals do you want to have? In my opinion it’s easier to have a larger flock of sheep. Goats tend to be more intelligent and personable, and trickier escape arrists too. Goats also will run out of food faster on a grazing land, because the forbes and woody shrubs they thrive on are slower growing. You can always set up a goat brush service however, visiting other farms to clear weeds with goats. Just some things to consider. Ultimately it’s up to you and what will work best in your location. Hugh Rhodes I recently tried Dorper (first time ever having sheep) the mutton taste was super mild and it was tender/very easy to chew. I’ve eaten steak for a lot of my life, and I could easily eat lamb over steak. 👌

Some people do milk sheep, but i never have.

Yes they a hardy and for the most part they fight off the parasites pretty well. But i do worm mine a couple times a year.

We used to butcher one every now and then but it had a very strong mutton taste which we didn't like. I have heard that the hair sheep meat is better tasting since they don't have the lanolin in their wool. Is this true? Or is the secret butchering when they are lambs. Thanks for your help.

From what I’ve read Dorper sheep have a very mild mutton taste. It’s different compared to other breeds. :D

I'm sure there is a video on this but what does it cost you to raise one up to sell vs the sale price? what is the profit margin if your selling and not consuming?

Depends on vegetation in your location, but most can run two per acre.

Sheep are superior - ruminates vs grazers , easily herded vs escape artist, , make wool vs meh, make less milk than goats but milk is the only thing goats do better.

I agree !! I like goats better .. you don't need to shear them . But if I was yo have sheep it would be hair sheep .
