My main criticism would be the lack of so many acts from the 60s and 70s. Surely the Seekers would have to be on this list, international trailblazers for Aussie music, just so iconic. Then the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy, Air Supply, the Little River Band, Russel Morris, the Mixtures, New World and Kevin Johnson. Maybe even Frank Ifield needs a mention. Great to see the Easybeats here, that song still sounds great today! Thanks for the chart, a lot of fun. PS Of course number 1 should be Daddy Cool's Eagle Rock such a phenomenon at the time.

Love the list, I thought eagle rock would make it for sure! I do think it will be super interesting to see in 30 years if artists like Flume, Tame Impala, Rufus Du Sol, Gang of Youths, Sia, etc etc will be held in the same light as these songs are today. Maybe they will never get the esteem of the previous generations but I think its just something that takes time and nostaliga to really kick in.

Eagle Rock was literally my last cut song on the list. Its on the honourable mention list of course though. Time will tell on the newer Australian artists. That is why the songs at the top of the list are older songs. Those that have stood the test of time hold more prestige in my opinion. I still wanted to represent some newer aus songs in this video though and I picked the ones that I think will/have aged well so far. If I had a bone to pick with Eagle Rock, it would be that over time the song has not taken too seriously, which i guess is why it just missed out.

Thank you for the effort you've put into this great video! Along with some other commenters, I can think of some artists and songs that might have deserved a place on your list. Among them would be: "Stranded" by The Saints, "The Real Thing" by Russell Morris, any of the Seekers' massively influential songs, "Massachusetts" or "To Love Somebody" and anything from the movie Saturday Night Fever by the Bee Gees, and something by Kylie Minogue (the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time).

No Johnny O’Keefe? Seriously, any list of best Australian popular music that doesn’t include the wild one has no credibility. No Bee Gees? No Olivia? Regardless of what you think of the music (and I rate them both in their genres), they were both global giants. Same for Helen Reddy. I am Woman was a monster. You can argue that Master’s Apprentices should be there in place of Vance Joy etc, but the omission of the above four is unforgivable.

Overall pretty damn good list. I might disagree with some of the relative rankings and some of the artists/songs, but I think if you surveyed the entire Australian population, the end result wouldn't be much different to this. I particularly liked and agreed with your song choices for multiple hit artists like These Days vs My Happiness, I Touch Myself vs Pleasure and Pain, To Her Door vs 12 other Paul Kelly songs etc. 👍👍 Edit: have to also submit my formal disapproval for not having Eagle Rock in the final list 😉 2nd edit: I reckon Live it Up by Mental as Anything deserved at least a shortlist - still holds up with my 20 something mates through to my parents. Again, great list though 👍

A few reasonable songs. Nowhere near approaching The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Clash, The Cure, Genesis, Roxy Music... the list goes on. Putting Australian music beside British music, is a bit like putting a very good amateur English cricket team beside the Australian national cricket team. ;-)

I keep thinking about this stupid comment. There is only one country that could possibly "compete" with British music, and Australia wasn't it - big deal. Get over it. We can't beat you at soccer, either. I spend a lot of thought and effort defending and championing Brit music when the RRHOF nominations are made each year, and I think my taste in Brit music is fairly extensive, but I just hate this BS.

Working Class Man was a cover of an American song, and Australians never fought at Khe Sanh.
@Noluckman
@Noluckman 3 ай бұрын
Australian bombers supported the Americans throughout the entire seige flying close air support missions. So we did participate in the battle, but we had no ground infantry in the battle. The song is also not meant to be about the battle, it's written by a veteran of the war and his experiences after returning home. Also, Working Class Man isn't a cover. The guy who wrote it, Johnathan Cain, never played it. Jimmy Barnes played it first. Though, I couldn't find any info saying it was written years before Jimmy met Johnathan either, it appears it was written for Jimmy Barnes to sing.

@solitudeausmusic
@solitudeausmusic Жыл бұрын
Yes, I am younger than 30, but I definitely tried to put my age bias aside. Only 5 of the included songs were released after the year 2000 and the entire top 10 are songs that have stood the test time. I deliberately put emphasis on these types of songs higher in the list, because in my opinion the longer a song stands a test of time the greater it becomes. So therefore the newer songs were lower in the list and the older songs were higher in the list. By your comment I'm assuming one of two things. You only watched the first 5 songs, or you just don't think anything that has come out post 2000 is worth your time. Fair enough if that is your opinion, but its not one that I agree with.
@graeme02
@graeme02 Жыл бұрын
@@solitudeausmusic Thank you for your timely response. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. You are correct to say we do not agree and that is ok. Music often creates differing opinions. A differing opinion just comes down to personal choice and/or personal taste. Thank you for confirming the correctness of my original comment. Age inevitably plays a part on us all when it comes to musical tastes. That's just the way it is, sorry if you felt any negativity in that regard. Also, both of your assumptions were incorrect. 1/ I did watch and listen to the full video 2/ I did not mention 'post 2000' or any other date. Perhaps I had also made an incorrect assumption when I read the video's tittle. I assumed the top 30 Aussie songs of all time was going to be an historical view of Australia's music progression rather than a personal viewpoint. Either way, no harm done. Thanks for the original upload. Cheers.

Only one Chisel, is not enough. Although you did choose the right one. Only one acca-dakka is not enough. Long way is a classic, so is Thunderstruck, and several others. Only one Midnight Oil. Beds are burning. US Forces. Short Memory. Come on! Eagle Rock, good. Solid Rock. Good. What about The Seekers? Maybe it doesn't work on modern equipment, but back in the '60s, on the equipment then, Judith Durham's voice would grab you by the ears and hold you. Early Robert Plant / Led Zep ~ had a similar electric quality. Something about that voice just touched your soul, grabbed your attention. Same with Jimmi Barnes. You'd think there'd be one Skyhooks song. Not sure which one, but ~ Horror movie? I wasn't a wild fan of the Gibb brothers, but they did sell a hell of a lot of records. Same with Dr Hook. What about INXS? You're going to mention Kyle, you better mention Mr Hutchence. How about the very first Australian rock star? How about the son of the Mayor of Bondi Beach? How about Johnny O'Keefe? "You make me want to SHOUT!" That bloke could pump out some serious energy, let me tell you! The song, the musical style, was so different to anything else going on at that time, at least in Australia. I think it was inspired by Chuck Berry and Johnnie be good.
