From the narrative genius of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the freedom, depth, and fidelity of Horizon Forbidden West, there have been massive strides over the years. Narrowing down the best is tough, but there are some clear winners.

My favourite open world games are The witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo 4, Red Dead 1 and 2, GTA5, Mad Max, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Spiderman, Ghosts of Tsushima, Batman Arkham City and Arkham Knight, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, Sleeping Dogs, Infamous games and Dying light 1. In no particular order. I love them all.

@@Rockstar52742 I haven't played anyrhing quite like it in terms of the cyberpunk and open world. Deus Ex and the Observer remaster are games with that theme you might enjoy. To be fair Cyberpunk is very unique as a game and world.

@@thelastpersononearth9765 Yep you get some ai comrades, that are pretty cool to use in gameplay with sync shots, commands and other stuff. I actually prefer playing single for most missions but online is super fun just messing around in open world

Maybe a game dev team will read this one day and make it happen. So like to increase ranking of comment, if you want this in future gaming: Would be awesome if game devs built their games as a series of relevant job simulators, with all of them composing one game. Noticed players enjoy it. Example: build a tavern, be or employee a NPC bartender or manager with Chat GPT responses relevant to game lore and story. Each position being a job simulator itself, yet one game. Imagine if many jobs were added into one game like Grand Theft Auto, instead of players being merely criminals, now their is diversity and many career pathways the player can choose from. This would be like real-life as the jobs become more intricate in each update, with all of us always looking for the next big job. Scaling in status, wealth, property, and learning a wide array of conversation skills within in the game world that we can use in real life. GPT added to games could change everything. It's possible to use conversations to animations if Devs use modular functions that represent animated interactions. For example, any relevant dialogue the player transmits to bartender will lead to NPC bartender using reusable bartender interactions: of serving the player with a drink or reading an existing menu describing to player what items the tavern sells. Or simply getting to know the bartenders life story, according to the fantasy lore which is impossible in real-life. Repeat this pattern per idea, now we have human level conversations with NPC's, triggering animated results. Thus a functional social NPC. We'll call this the conversation to interaction process.

Great to see some underrated bangers like Sleeping Dogs and Sunset Overdrive included. Those are two fantastic games. And of course, no shock that RDR2 is #1. The game is so overrated it kills me. I've tried to get into it several times and it's just so bloated and boring that I always end up bouncing off. Yes the world is huge and amazingly detailed. That doesn't make it fun.

1. RDR2 2. Witcher 3 3. GTA V 4. Skyrim 5. Cyberpunk 2077 6. Starfield 7. AC Mirage 8. AC Odyssey . BAsically Rockstar, CDPR, Bethesda, Ubisoft in that order and Ubisoft is basically junk. Why i held off buying a new gen console for so long too. It's either RDR2 and Witcher 3 last gen or Cyberpunk and starfield this gen. Last gen has it beat imo but it's closer than people want to give Cyberpunk and starfield credit. These are still next gen games. RDR2 and Wticher 3 had better attention to detail more involved stories etc.

Does anyone believe that sleeping dogs is worth it in 2023? And by "worth it", I mostly mean the gameplay. I have heard a much about that game and I would have tried it, but....The fact that is old, is pulling me away.
