My husband and I met and married at the worst stage of our lives. Both of us overworked, overstressed, overweight, and carrying tons of baggage. He was the solo dad of three teenagers, a daughter and two sons, and I was the solo mum of three teenagers, two daughters and a son. When I wasn't working I was spending all of my time driving my one girl to all of her activities or picking the other up at the police station. Same with him. My ex had found another and left me with nothing much more than a broken heart, and same with him. We became good friends providing therapy for each other. One night, he rang me up and said "hey, you wanna get hitched?" And I said sure "Sure, what the hell, may as well pool resources." While that sounds so unromantic and a total recipe for disaster, we've spent 15 amazingly happy years together, working hard, struggling together through more challenges, becoming grandparents. We are more in love than ever. For our wedding song, we chose "Is this Love?" By Bob Marley. It represents exactly what we experienced: falling in love despite poverty, discouragement and grunge....but with hope for the future.

When I found myself falling head-over-heels in love with my now husband, I started making a super secret mushy ultimate love song playlist. The sappiest songs you can think of landed on this thing. One night, two years in, we got high on pot cookies and I spilled the beans about how I had been making this playlist for years and it was going to be the soundtrack to our wedding. I still cry when I listen to the playlist. It was an eclectic mix: Eric Clapton, Kacey Musgraves, Shanaia Twain, The Avett Brothers, Ray Lamontagne, The Water Boys, Cake, David Bowie, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Dire Straits, Beyonce, Three Dog Night, John Denver, Father John Misty, Otis Redding, etc. Our wedding was the most incredible day of our lives, and these songs take me back to it every time I push play. Music is a time machine. Oh, we also surprised our guests by slipping into singing a verse and chorus of 'Endless Love' after we said our vows to each other during the ceremony. I’ve wanted my wedding song to be Come What May from Moulin Rouge for a few years. To me it’s a perfect song for a wedding. It’s about loving someone no matter what you two go through in life, no matter what changes come your way, no matter what challenges you face, Come What May you will still love each other. 35 years ago my husband and I danced to Anita Baker's 'Just Because'. At first it was going to be Taylor Dane's 'I'll Always Love You' but then 6 months before we got married, Anita released 'Just Because' and it felt like it was written for us. I swear, she is such an underrated singer. You never hear her name mentioned in these Mojo lists and that's a a shame cause she really is an amazingly soulful songstress.
