Hello! Anubias is a great aquatic plant for even the beginner and can be super simple to add to your aquarium because it doesn't even need to be planted! All you need to do is attach it to a hardscaping element in your tank (such as rock or wood) and in this video I show you 3 easy, quick and painless ways to do it! No worries - you won't hurt your anubias OR glue your fingers together. :)

Personally I have used small rubber bands to hold anubias until it can naturally attach itself to a rock it piece of wood. Sometimes the rubber bands will eventually break and come off them selves or once it's attached well you can cut it and remove it if you need to.

Hi Joanna! Thanks for another video. We have had bad luck when using superglue on our anubias (and our Java fern as well). We glued the roots to the hardscapes, however after a few weeks, those roots died off and melted back, resulting in the plants floating loose. We ended up using some yarn, but that was also a struggle! Will definitely try your method 2a. Have a blessed day and New Year!

Anubias is about the only plant I can keep alive. But I've never attached it to anything because I was afraid I would kill it. I always just wedge the roots between rocks to keep it from floating, but it never looks good. But I think I'm going to be brave and try attaching it with the wire method and see how it goes! Hi. This is really helpful. I just got back into the hobby after 20 years and am new to using live plants. One problem I am having is with the plants which you actually plant into the substrate (i.e. amazon swords, crypts). I am finding them hard to stay in the substrate and after eventually getting them them to stay, looking a bit lopsided with roots sticking out. I am using fluval stratum so not sure they would be easier to plant with a different type. Any tips or tricks on planting into substrate would be appreciated.
@77slate
@77slate 3 жыл бұрын
Try topping the stratum with sand, aqua soils will hold the nutrients but not dense enough to hold fine roots the sand will compact and give those roots a better grip
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, that’s the trickiest part of planting. I think that’s why I became such an Anubias fan right out of the gate. What I personally like to do is sometimes cut the roots a bit so they are not so long (3” max) not everyone would though. Mound the substrate where you want the plant and then drag the plant into position from maybe 6” or 7” away. I have not used stratum, I personally find the fine sand the easiest to work with. You could also place a few small rocks or pebbles (if it works with your scape) around the plant and gently tamp roots in that way. I will have a “easy ways to plant” video out sometime soon - good luck!

Wish I had watched this before I made all the mistakes you warned about lol! I hear enough “ope’s” in der for me to think us girls are both from the nort woods. I too share your water parameters. I have had an embarrassing hard time with anubias. The leaves are prone to yellowing with holes and turning into a brown mesh work before death. I have increased fertilizer with what looks like improvement. They get low to medium light with floaters above. Any suggestions?

Correct, but the roots may grow into the substrate in time - and the rhizome will always stay out of the substrate. ☺️

What type of wire is that? I’m reading most metals aren’t good in an aquarium
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Loralyn, I like plastic coated wire. You can even put a drop of super glue on the end of the wire to cover the bit of exposed metal inside. Metal is not good in aquariums - especially for shrimp.

I need to find a glue that will work under water. I hate trying to remove the large places of wood from my 125g to glue new plants to it.
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I’ve had to do that before - used the same super glue gel with good results. I like to put on plant first and then quickly hold against the driftwood. It takes a bit longer to adhere under water and sometimes it takes a couple tries but works well for me (might want to wear gloves) Good luck!☺️

I've just attached a bunch of Anubuis Nana Petite to my spider wood with out removing it from the tank. I also used the Gloria brand gel. I put a dab on the Anubuis, out of the tank, then reached into the tank and placed it on the spider wood. I only held it for a couple seconds and it stayed. I actually heard that the water cures it faster. 1st time watching your videos, nicely done.

@@medkow7415 moisture is what actually cures super glue. Thats why gluing under water can be tricky. If you don't use enough glue it can cure to much before you get it stuck to what you want to stick to.
