Chinese car companies aren't particularly competitive compared to more established players from Japan and Germany. But Volvo is owned by Geely group, they are well established in the US markets. There are other small brands are also owned by Chinese companies.

In a way a Buick Envision that is made in China is built like a Toyota quality wise and guess what workers in China has a better quality control than America so to improve quality the best solution for Ford is to kill jobs in America and move them to China. Harley-Davidson is the Ford of motorcycles the reason why Chinese fakes of this American motorcycle I mention are better quality than the original.

Its hard to get an accurate idea even from Chinese consumer reports. This is due to the fact the average consumer in China is probably the first one to ever own a car in their family and so doesn't have a very rounded idea about what makes a car good or bad . Chinese auto consumers look for pretty different things than your average western consumer. For example, it seems to me they tend to look at luxury and appearance over reliability . Given most Chinese brands have not been mass producing vehicles for the average consumer for very long it is hard to say how a Chinese car holds up after 5, 10, 15 years. When I was buying a car in China, I was considered purchasing a domestic brand, I read tons of Chinese car reviews but the vast majority focused on how quite or noisy the cabin was. Another factor is what your average Chinese person considers comfortable. Chinese have generally smaller frames than most westerners and so most domestic brands seem cramped and uncomfortable to me. Despite all of this, there has undoubtably been huge leaps in the quality of Chinese cars in the last 5 years and I believe they are improving every year.Although currently even most sales people at domestic car showrooms will often, and I mean like almost every time you talk to them, say things "well its obviously not as good as such and such western brand but it's good for a Chinese car".

A great example of this is the current MX-5 "Miata" to the previous Miata. Manufacturers are trying to make them lighter though, with upcoming and future models planned to be lighter than their predecessors, but still heavier than other previous models.
