So, just what are the top 5 best saltwater fishing lures that catch more fish? And why is it so hard to find lures that work? Is less, really more when it comes to artificial bait? I’ll answer all of these questions in less than 5 minutes in this short video. Oh, and in case you’re wondering. The main reason why great lures are hard to find is that the manufactures design artificial bait for two reasons. We only care about one of those reasons, but if you’ve ever stood in front of a lure display at your local bait shop, then you can’t blame them for catering to the other!

Thanks for the videos, I used your idea on how to set my transducer in my Lightning kayak. It’s similar to the compass as far as the transducer plate.

Great video Ron, myself I have also replaced treble hooks with singles on my top waters! I have also just been using a single trailer hook and the hook ups been better no foul hooking and they have been smashing them from the back of the lure.

Very cool! Glad to know that. I wondered if a simple trailing hook would do the trick. Thanks for sharing that great tip. It actually would fix the "front hook catches the line" problem that sometimes happens on various lures depending on the offset of the front hook.

You delivered the narration on this video like a pro, nice work! I've heard other KZfaqrs say they get less hook ups with inline hooks on hard baits. What's your take on that?

Thanks for your kind words. I don't notice a difference in hook ups. I think those that are missing them are not likely setting the hook with treble hooks. So rather than missing hook ups with single inline hooks, they're likely allowing fish to set the hook on themselves with trebles. If you try to do that with single inline hooks you'll miss them every time. You've got to set the hook when you feel the fish!

Quarter ounce or 3/8 ounce? The lakes are still frozen here in northern Minnesota and fishing opener is less than 3 weeks away.. stay healthy and keep up the good work with your fishing videos.

Thank you for watching! I hope you thaw out up there soon. I use whatever weight is on sale for the most part, but 1/4 is likely my most used. Our marsh is on average about 2’ - 3’ deep and I retrieve quickly so jig head weight doesn’t matter so much.

Really good info, Ron. And I agree with your choices, especially #1. As I watched you go thru the hard baits, I was wondering if you'd mention any soft plastics. As a fisherman here in the Tampa Bay area, the DOA CAL shad tails are my go to bait of choice. I've caught just about every inshore fish out there on them. I've experimented with a lot of their colors over the years and probably have 20 colors in my tackle box right now. Just my opinion, but I don't find that color makes much of a difference - if the fish are biting, they'll hit any color! And they're versatile as well - I work them both as a shrimp imitator (vertical jigging) and as a bait fish (horizontal retrieve). Both methods catch fish with these lures.

Great question, perhaps others know better but here's my best guess at a comparison bluefish -> bluefish; redfish -> striped bass; flounder -> halibut.

Nice video and info, DOA cal is my go to inshore bait. You should fish up by st Augustine or Guana park for trout and reds? I caught a 21 inch trout on the doa cal last time I went. I think you should have a lot more subscribers. Keep up the good work👍

What in-line hooks do you use to replace the trebles?

A: Owner. Here are the steps I follow for replacing treble hooks on lures with inline single hooks. Step 1: Look your current treble hook up by printing page 6 of this document and matching it: www.jannsnetcraft.com/Content/downloads/sizing_chart.pdf Step 2: Use the chart on the owner website (see the image "Treble to Single Conversion Table") to look up the replacement: www.ownerhooks.com/product/single-replacement-hooks-xxx-strong/ or www.ownerhooks.com/product/single-replacement-hooks-x-strong/ or www.ownerhooks.com/product/single-replacement-hooks-4x-strong-2/ ... different strengths have different options so if you can't find the right size in one of the tables, try a different strength altogether. Step 3: Locate the replacement model number on your favorite online store or in your local tackle shop. I found the cheapest price on amazon for my replacement amzn.to/2VMLAGe - As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Step 4: Replace the treble hooks with the new single inline hooks using split ring pliers. The front hook should face forward when hanging down. The back hook should face backwards when hanging down. Step 5: Go catch some fish! Tight lines!

Great vid. Id only disagree with the DOA soft plastic. I got tired of buying so many different soft plastics and not really seeing what they do in the water. I started testing them over the years at different speeds and temps. DOA had very little to no action on a slower retrieve or cold weather. Down south and Kwigglers remain great no matter the temp or speed. Additionally, Big Bites Cane thumper (yes a bass soft plastic) has great action too.

Good points. The DOA work well with a fast retrieve which creates the action. I recently switched from DOA to ZMan soft plastics ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZl7nLh50b2WqYU.html ). I'll have to take a look at the Big Bites Cane thumper....thanks for the tip.

What is the reason for switching out the treble hooks with singles? Still new to fishing.

Great question. You're "still new to fishing" so you likely haven't yet throat hooked a fish with a treble hook and had the hooks so far back in his throat that the fish was going to die (watch an example here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpebeM2QtdCqYI0.html ), or, hopefully you haven't gotten a treble hook, hook you in the hand, arm, leg. With inline single hooks you won't typically throat hook a fish so bad that you won't get it out without ruining the fish. Overall, inline single hooks are generally safer for both you and the fish. Great question....(1) they do less damage to the fish for catch and release, (2) they do less damage to the fisherman/fisherwoman when accidents happen, (3) they're quicker to deal with when you have the fish in your hands and safer at that point too. Essentially, they're safer and efficient.

@@TheRogerronaldo I actually haven't noticed a difference. Remember though that you have to set the hook for inline single hooks. I've seen many say the hook up ratio drops in comparison. But I bet if you ask them if they set the hook with treble hooks they'll likely say no.... if you don't set the hook with single inline hooks you may very well lose the fish!

The mirrolure 17 mr and 27 mr are trout slayers bro. Far better than the catch 2000 far as quantity. I do love the catch 2000 tho.

I've tried them and they do catch fish. I haven't done an episode on them yet simply because I ran into quality issues with the bait. After catching one or two aggressive fish the two 17/27s I had started taking on water. I plan to give them another try just in case I got a bad batch. Have you noticed that issue?
