I'd forgotten about Ramon and Indio...don't know how I forgot as I just watched both those movies recently! Angel Eyes definitely comes up when thinking of western movie villains, but I think maybe both Ramon and Indio might be more evil villains possibly. But that opening scene where Angel Eyes rides in and butts his way into dinner/breakfast with his victim, is definitely a hard scene to beat in it's own right.

Indio was the closest portrayal of a psychopath in western history, not only did he get a sexual thrill out of murder but his opening scene where he lets a guard live to tell every one shows his narcisism and need for control. If we compare him to Frank then Frank is no Psychopath, he's a gangster as he shows when he says in his introduction "well, now you've said my name" before killing the surviving witness.

Lee was the backbone of the Spaghetti western industry mate, every film he was in was elevated for it. If I have to compare him with a Brit I would compare him to Christopher Lee. They both had extraordinary lives before acting and they both (probably as a result) could create a screen presence around themselves like no others could.

For me the best of the bad is Angel Eyes (this is the very inscription on Mr Van Cleef's resting place), but not because "he enjoys doing evil", quite the contrary: he's a very peculliar villain - he even kills less people than the protagonists of his film - who aren't close to heroes themselves - and he avoids killing people when it's not necessary (ex. he doesn't kill the whole family of the farmer in the beggining - only the member he was contracted to kill and the teenager son in self defence - had he not come with a riffle, he would be alive - but didn't touch the woman and the child, although they saw him, so they were witnesses that could turn him in and be hanged). He also seems to have a soft spot for disssabled people like his informative and the wounded soldiers in the abandoned fortess, and even leave them some alchohol. This could be part of his backstory, even if we dodn't literally find out, but in the last scene we see he misses the top of his finger, too (yeah, I know Mr Lee lost it building a dollhouse for his daughter, but it also fits plotwise). He's very interesting and presenting him as an one - dimentional, totally evil character doesn't do him justice.

I would have Indio at number 2 purely because he is a clear psychopath. I would keep Frank Frank at number 1 because he is not doing it for kicks but purely because of being a gangster, he's a career killer where for Indio control, misery and murder are the only things that give him a thrill, Indio has little choice where Frank can stop.

You neglected to mention one of the best of the bad men in western movies. That being the character actor Jack Elam. In his first movie, Rawhide, (not the TV show), staring Tyrone Power and Susan Haward, he plated one of the outlaws who were waiting to rob a stage. In one scene ho was taking shots at Susan Haward's baby sitting in the sand. He played many bad man characters in his early carrier and was an excellent comedic actor in later years.

I must like Spag Westerns!😂 4. Jack Wilson. Was there a more sinister bad guy, besides Angel Eyes? 5. Bruce Dern played more bad guys than anyone, all the way back to Gunsmoke and many more in TV. Fun fact: When Henry Fonda turned up on set Sergio Leone went mad, Henry turned up clean shaven and Sergio wanted a reaction from the audience, he wanted them to see Fonda and say "holy shit!! That's Henry Fonda!"(paraphrase). I would probably have had Indio on this least because he was the truest psychopath in western history, he didn't kill because of a plan he got a sexual thrill out of causing misery and from murder. Colonel Mortimer didn't become a bounty killer for money, he became a bounty killer to exterminate vermin and Indio was the rat at the end of the sewer.

After seeing Angel Eyes I am unnerved by Lee Van Cleef any time he shows up on screen. I recently saw him in the background of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" and was anticipating him to bring harm to James Stewart. I also noticed that he appears to look like a proto-Fred Krueger. Henry Fonda's Frank is deeper than Angel Eyes. Fonda was the better actor of the two. Even though Frank was merciless, he had style which one could admire. Lee van Cleef's other great role, Colonel Mortimer, sort of shadows the more evil one.

Disagree. Loco the bounty Hunter in The Great Silence is arguably the most evil, compelling, and strangely charismatic villain in all westerns, in one of the greatest anti-westerns ever made.

The only one of these movies I haven't seen is Once Upon A Time and while I have to agree these are the best of the worst I don't agree with your ranking. The one that I remember the most is Snake Eyes, and it's been many years since I've seen the movie yet I still remember him, therefore IMHO, Snake Eyes is the most evil, the worst villain in the west.

@@RexHooper1 The comedy was mediocre when it was released and has not aged well. The Paleface movies with Bob Hope were a little bit better (not aged as badly), one outstandingly great joke when Bob "saves" Jane Russell from the Gila Monster, it wasn't a stick he used, but You'll have to watch it. The second one has Jane Russell, Roy Rodgers, Jay Silverheels, and Clayton Moore, and more, they are just the ones I remember.

Not agree with all your choices and not with your order. I'll put Sentenza first, Frank second, Liberty Valance third. And for the other two I'll put Jack Palance as Curly and finally Klauss Kinski as The bossu and many other films. I like Lee Marvin, Henry Fonda, Jack Palance very much but NO ONE can match Lee Van Cleef in westerns.
