I love the theme music to Navajo Joe also,and even more then that to The Good The Bad and the Ugly.

Solid video sir! Excited to stumble across your channel. Huge western fan by haven’t read a ton of the novels, so this list gives me a solid place to start!! Interesting development for me recently: I read True Grit and even though I almost always like the book more than the movie, because I grew up on the movie and seen it probably 50+ times, the book actually just didn’t do it for me. I think if I’d read it first I would have liked it more, but because the order was reversed I just couldn’t let go of it - the Duke will always be the real Rooster in my heart lol 😂

The "stealing land" lie ... again. No land was "stolen." It was fought over. Your ancestors died by the thousands fighting for it. You greatly dishonor and insult their memory by stating that it was "stolen."

Try reading, "A Texas Ranger" by Napoleon Augustus Jennings...it talks about life on the Southern Frontier and how a man and a small detachment of Texas Rangers helped to quell the violence on.the lawless Southern border.

Larry McMurtry was a big fan of books in general. He read a lot, collected rare books, and passed on his love of readings to anyone who would talk to him. I read all of his books when I was a teenager. I need to go back and read them again. He based Lonesome Dove loosely on the Story family -- who are a real family that moved from Texas to Montana.

Blood Meridian is the best of the lot. I've read it eight times.
@jonathanrichter425620 күн бұрын
You are aware that Larry McMurtry wrote several other novels involving Gus MCrea and Woodrow Call? Chronologically the story starts with Dead Man's Walk, where Gus and Woodrow first join the Texas Rangers, and was turned into a miniseries starring Jonny Lee Miller as Woodrow and David Arquette as Gus. It fair to middling. Then comes Comanche Moon which was a great miniseries starring Steve Zahn as Gus and Karl Urban as Woodrow. Val Kilmer was fantastic in a guest starring role. There was of course a Lonesome Dove 2 which was made into series with much of the same cast as the original. Later in Woodrow's life is a book called Streets of Laredo which was made into a movie with James Garner as Woodrow.

Wow, I had no idea. I actually just finished reading Dead Man's Walk. It's awesome. I will try to watch all of these adaptations if I can. Thanks for the tip!

Franco Nero looks a lot like Terrence Hill
@RexHooper1Ай бұрын
Yes he does. Terrence Hill got his start in westerns because the studio couldn't afford Franco Nero so got a look-a-like. That might of been a strange start but Terrence Hill is a great cowboy actor in his own right and I wouldn't fight anyone who put him in their top 5 list.

I have never understood, among film fans the need to go " tribal" on great movies. I know that Hawk and Wayne did Rio Bravo as "an answer to High Noon." Great! I also love Rio Bravo. In fact I think Noon and Bravo make a great double feature. A different take on a similar theme. I remember back in the seventies there was an argument about Peckinpah and Leone. Leone did "cartoon westerns" while Peckinpah was "authentic". I get it, but Again, two great directors who have, as they should, a different take on the Western. And I love them both. Fantastic visual essay by the way.

I loved Westerns and the glorification of that lifestyle for many years until I saw this movie. I'll never forget how much it broke me and my buddy who rented it back when Netflix was still an online Blockbuster. It became my favorite western from that moment on, in the fact that they could show you a story that shows the truth of the matter in those days and give you an understanding of the issue with mob rule.

There is also Tigrero (Klaus Kinski) in The Great Silence, one of the most evil motherfuckers in western history and he wins. El Indio is also legendary, both for his music and for his complexity. He's a monster, but Volonté brings a melancholy to the character that makes him interesting. Mapache could also get a spot here.

To say High Noon is “communist or Un American” is one of the biggest loads of B S I have ever heard. For one, it takes place in America’s old west, and two, Marshal Will Kane knew how dangerous his enemies were and what they were capable of and was determined to protect the community he was sworn to protect and serve at all costs. That’s as American as anything else.
@TheGreatestVoice195812 күн бұрын
I agree with you overall, but just the fact that it takes place in America doesn’t meant it can’t be communist propaganda. Other then that I agree with you and the idea this was a communist film is beyond absurd
