We should recognize that the competition b/w Universal and Disney makes both parks better. Neither park would invest as they have (HP, galaxy edge, carsland etc). They both need to exist to keep both parks improving!

While I can totally understand hurricane Irma being listed as one of the worst things to happen to DW last year, I would have to say that their reaction to a tough situation has to embody some of the absolute BEST that the Disney experience has to offer. My wife and I and my parents who are in their 80's evacuated from Naples to Port Orleans FQ. Every, and I mean EVERY cast member that we encountered during our stay went above and beyond to try to make the best of a really bad situation while at the same time, often not knowing the extent of damage at their own homes. No power was lost, instructions were clear, warm food was provided with a limited menu, makeshift activities were provided for the kids, pets were allowed to stay among many other things that Disney did REALLY well. The morning after the storm we awoke to trees down and leaves and branches everywhere but by 3pm save for a few of the larger trees, the resort looked like nothing had happened. Just amazing amounts of preparedness, work and coordination. Very well done.

A great list and great discussion! Steve is getting to be such a HUGE asset to The Dis! One thing I love is that Pete has people with all different perspectives on the Dis, so no matter who is in the show all sides are represented and as a viewer/listener it really helps! Not everyone is as fair as The Dis :)

Pandora was visually stunning. It was like walking into a completely brand new world. I was very impressed.

Just as an aside, I think Charles and Sean are excellent additions to the team. Charles had a lot of hate directed at him initially but I think he's great: dry humour, he researches his stories and gives candid views - I'd like to see Charles and Sean in the parks too.

Couldn’t agree more: Wishes was the perfect fireworks show. Best songs and a story that was universal, so, whatever country you came from, it would touch you. Although Happily Ever After is visually more stunning, it has no heart. Hopefully, Wishes 2.0 returns in the 50th.

Can I just say I love your episodes and love your Disney discussions. There are some Disney sites that are 100% pro Disney and won't debate the issues or say anything negative about the company. Pete have several seats! Happily Ever After is WAY better than Wishes! The idea of the nighttime fireworks show is to get your ass inside the damn park! Also the whole "the competition between Universal and Disney is over" commentary needs to stop. You should be ENCOURAGING competition between the two because we, the fans and other park guests benefit from said competition. Do you think Disney would've announced all this stuff had it not been for the fact that Universal was coming into their own and giving them a real run for their money? Absolutely not! You should know better than anyone that Disney is quite comfortable leaving things the way they are as long as the money continues to roll in. It is only when they are threatened of losing said income do they move. I hope Universal and Disney continue to duke it out for years to come!

OMG! Mobile ordering is the best! We wanted Flame Tree but the line was way out the door. We ordered through the app and were eating our meal not five minutes later. Genius!

We were in the Magical Kingdom the week of November 12th and were on the monorail and were not sure of the stop to get off to make the connection to Epcot. Someone spoke up and told us where to go and it turned out to be Steve. Thanks for the directions Steve!

I think the 20th DIS party at EPCOT would make a better honorable mention. It was awesome and meeting all these cool people was number one. Oh yeah and being at Animal Kingdom to ride Flight of Passage on the second day of opening wasn't bad. Only waited 60 minutes!

I actually made it into Magic Kingdom with a weapon in January. I do cross country and track and field, so I wear special shoes called spikes. They're basically racing sneakers that you screw spikes into the bottom so you can climb up a hill easier. I used a drawstring bag that I also used at a meet a month before. I didn't realized I had long spikes wrapped in a plastic bag until I was approaching the security. I was mortified I'd get kicked out, they never even checked what was in the bag. It worked out for me, but kinda scary knowing it was that easy to get in

While I enjoyed and will always tear up for Wishes like I tear up for Happily Ever After, I feel as though the fireworks have grown with me. Wishes are and will always be a part of Disney, but I had wishes when I was a kid, I haven’t made many wishes lately. I have dreams I pursue and what ifs but wishes have become almost frivolous but with Happily Ever After, it’s all about pursuing those dreams. Actually doing something about them and chasing them rather than just wishing like I used to do. With the place I’ve been in my life for the past few years, it was the message I needed. Not that wishes can come true, but that I can chase these dreams and actually make something of them ( which makes me think of a Walt quote: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them,” but not only that one, also a quotation from Brave, “You control your destiny, you don’t need magic to do it. And there are no magical shortcuts to solving your problems.” ) It’s a wonderful sentiment and I think especially after my first NLIC ( No Longer in Consideration ) from the DCP and from the local Disney store, it was just the message and reminder I needed. And it’s all the more important to me now that I have been accepted into the College Program and will be there in the spring. Wishes brings me nostalgia, but Happily Ever After moves me forward and that’s a big part of Disney: Keep moving forward.

Those tents for $600/day in the magic Kingdom should at least be an honorable mention for the worst of Disney money grabbing.

I just got back from Disney last week, and we spent most of a day at Hollywood and thought it was fine for that. We got in, did Star Wars (with the insane new Last Jedi planet), did Toy Story Mania, did the Star Wars Launch Bay thing, saw the courtyard stage show, then went out for dinner at Boma and got back in time to see the night show and the Tower of Terror wall effects, which were all pretty amazing. Still plenty of rides we could have ridden to fill more time, like a few more runs of Star Wars or Toy Story, and I haven't gotten to do the rollercoaster in a while (it was down in the morning when my fast passes were). It'll certainly be busier when the two new wings open up, but it's still a fun day for people not entirely jaded on the Disney experience.

Wow I feel special. My first time at WDW was this September and I stayed at the Carribean Beach Hotel. Yeah, the construction was a pain. The worst part was that there was no cheap quick way to eat breakfast that wasn't pure sugar. Also not sure if the construction affected the buses but dealing with the buses was terrible because they'd often get full at the first stop, I was at the last stop, so they'd skip all the next stops and a few times we waited almost 45 minutes for a bus. Nice to know that my experience at Caribbean Beach wasn't the norm.

I wouldn't say that Harry Potter has run it's course. There is Fantastic Beasts and there 're new games coming out.

We were lucky enough to take advantage of construction and the closing of River Country a few years back at Fort Wilderness. We were able to use our Passholder discount and stay in the cabins for nearly 1/3 regular price on both of our 10 day long summer and Christmas vacations. We never heard any construction and wouldn’t have gone to River Country anyway. I guess we lucked out.

I think the Nintendo extension is going to start the competition all over again, just super saiyan. That Mario Cart ride and Donkey Kong coaster look sick.

I agree with this list entirely. One thing that really upsets me though, is the amount of people that say it's such a big deal for Hercules to be in the fireworks show. Go the Distance was the song RIGHT AFTER THE OPENING of Wishes. I understand that Wishes was made at a different time when Hercules had more representation in the parks but it was never pulled from it. I agree that the other movies getting representation is perfect and the argument could be made that they have had representation in things like World of Color, but they haven't had representation in the flagship show at the flagship park the way Hercules has enjoyed for fifteen years. I know I'm nitpicking and this mini rant has gone on a lot longer than it deserves, but I'm just tired of hearing Hercules "finally" getting park representation. He was in Wishes.

With Caribbean Beach we were set to stay there last summer and when it was announced that the rehab was happening Disney didn’t tell us about it and we only found out from different websites and Disney only offered us $25 a night off our stay or a free switch to Fort Wilderness or Port Orleans French Quarter (which we picked).

Compared to 2016, this list was far more positive and that's a great job on Disney's part. A lot of problems last year were with massive upcharges and that wasn't nearly as big of a problem. Hollywood Studios was really the only thing that you can fully put on Disney

I have to disagree with Pete about all the D23 announcements hitting down Universal. It's certainly a response, but IOA is bringing in a new Harry Potter attraction and I think Pete also underestimates the power of Nintendo that's coming. But then again, even with all the announcements from Disney, there's quite a bit more to come that hasn't even been announced. I would prefer original, non-IP based attractions, but new stuff is always cool. If all the new stuff is as unexpectedly fantastic as Pandora, Disney will be quite the juggernaut.

Agreed with #4 on the worst--I was there in November, and it's a mess! And of course, Carribean Beach is torn up.. won't be staying at that resort again (too far to walk for food).. next time I'm staying at Pop Century I was one of the unfortunate people who had to suffer through the construction at Carribean Beach..

I'm actually looking forward to Slinky Dog Dash--I like roller coasters, but I have a family who are not big coaster fans, and I'm always looking out for gentler family coasters that they'll go on with me. This looks about as exciting as that sort of ride can get. Toy Story Land looks like not much otherwise, though--just two new rides, and the other one is a real kiddie ride. It probably needs more themed flats and stuff like the Toy Story Playland in Paris, just to build in more capacity.

Music wise, Happily Ever After is just fantastic. The way it flows from beginning to end, and the low and high points, it is just a far superior arrangement.

When I saw Rivers of Light for the first time during the 20th anniversary I was amazed that it was considered a dud. I thought it was awe-inspiring.

Agreed on the happily ever after....just stayed at Grandfloridian and watched from in the park, at the dock, and at the main building and wishes was way better in that it did play better everywhere, happily ever after is good but not great.

Toy Story Land is almost certainly going to be a Memorial Day weekend opening (last weekend of May) and its construction is going along so well, it's likely to have a two month advance previews and soft opening. So.. not really "Summer 2018". :) Thumbs up!

Go the Distance was in Wishes... It's instrumental and great because the vocal on that track is not very strong.

about the 24:00 mark. Disney is slightly restricted because some 21st Century Fox/20th Century Fox/Fox Television properties are represented by attractions in the Universal Parks. A similar situation to Marvel but on a smaller scale with the only one I can actually come up woth is the Simpsons land. Also while I know very little about the potentially acquiring IPs none to me other than The Simpsons stand out as potentially being able to carry a theme park ride except possibly the Rio, Open Season, and Ice Age films. Just my two cents even though my lack of knowledge is evident. Feel free to correct any errors I made (for instance I believe Disney would only get one of either the Ice Age or Open Season franchises)

What does everyone think about animal kingdom at night ( especially pandora)? Better than a night at hollywood studios?

Wishes and Happily Ever After are two entirely shows, and it is difficult to compare the two. Wishes is based on mostly the music and songs were written just for the show. Happily Ever After is based on the visuals and classic disney songs. Apples to oranges.

Watching this story now in late 2019 and thinking how Epcot's construction is going to make it less popular

The announcements that Disney made in D23 and them making it within the next 3-4 years is because they learned from Pandora the World of Avatar and they now know that they can make it within a reasonable time frame

I do think that Disney will always be the #1 resort in Orlando, BUT Universal will always be pushing them to stay on their toes. Disney's complacency cost them a lot of market share. Hopefully they've learned to not rest on their laurels and take its guests for granted. The competition between the 2 resorts is good for all of us. This was a great show!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Disney nut, but I think y’all highly underestimate the longevity of impact of the Harry Potter Franchise.

Stayed at carribean for 9 days in jamaica during construction...wasnt so bad they gave 75 dollars per day for our stay so it helped us save money and use free money in the parks...itll be awesome when its complete

Agreed that WDW will stay ahead of Uni. For all the things that Comcast is doing for the next ten years, which is a lot; WDW has in the queue just as many huge overhauls of old ride and new rides. Uni would have to triple what they planned to close the gap.

I agree, Pete. Wishes was WAY better to me. It always used to hit me in the feels. Happily Ever After, not so much. I felt it was too much, a bit forced. Strictly my opinion though.

Worst on my WDW 2017 list? Disney continuing to raise prices year over year to the point is has priced lower income families out of their Disney vacation. My DH and I have been to WDW 6 times since 2002. Our 4 day/4 night trip in 2015 was the same price as our 5 day/5 night trip in 2013. We were not able to afford a WDW vacation in 2017.

Pete, have to disagree with you in terms of Wishes vs. HEA. I have some amazing memories of Wishes (proposed under them in 2015), and thought it was a great show. But from the perspective of a show in the park itself HEA is far and away superior. I get what youre saying about the other venues outside the MK, but that experience IMO is secondary compared to the one in the park itself. And from that perspective, HEA is just head and shoulders over Wishes.

Agree with Pete, Wishes was a far better show. My opinion is not nostalgic, in fact I only started coming to Disney a couple of years ago. The music of Wishes was better, the choreography of the fireworks to the music was better, and it was much more cohesive and emotional and evoked a hopeful feeling. The new show is cool but it’s just designed to jam as many Disney properties as possible into one experience. It’s feels spastic and hyperactive and needs a good dose of Ritalin.

Yeah… no offense but I still don’t like Avatar. Still complete garbage to me, and I won’t be going on any of its ride. I don’t even want to go into that section of the park. To me, it will never belong in Disney World. Not now, not ever.
