I have few app driven board game and the issue with that is playing a board game is a good time to be far away from pc or a mobile phone and bring people together... I think they should give the possibility to play with or without app

Note on KINGDOM DEATH: The gameplay based brown box Expansions-and Core box-are HIPS plastic. You can get other miniatures in resin, as you said, but anything gameplay based is HIPS, so it’s actually relatively durable (more than resin, less than PVC)

I have been holding off getting Betrayal at Baldur's Gate because I generally only have my son with whom I can play that type of game, but your idea for playing Betrayal with two players is brilliant. Two others I might suggest for a beginning two-player collection would be Memoir '44, which is such a wonderful, simple, elegant system, and great fun; and Castle Panic, especially with the Wizard's Tower expansion -- my son and I have had hours of fun with that, and it is a great introduction to cooperative gaming. Your channel looks very interesting, especially as I want to start painting miniatures. I am looking forward to following it.

Memoir '44 is one of those that I look at all the time, but I have picked up. Maybe after I play Undaunted! Oh nice, I've not played with the Wizard Tower expansion. What does it add or change about the game?
@dhmcarver
@dhmcarver 3 жыл бұрын
@@HobbyNight The Wizard Tower expansion adds more fun and a bit more variability with the new Wizard Tower cards, some new challenges with new monsters, and a couple of new boss monsters. It was easy to integrate into the base game and made Castle Panic more interesting, but, more importantly, more fun, without being too convoluted. I noted that you mentioned Undaunted -- that is one I have yet to play, though I read the rules of my copy just last week. Hope to get to it soon.

I've never been a huge fan of board games but recently, I play Gloomhaven on TTS and I really love it ! I totally agree with you with the app for Mansion of Madness. Gloomhaven is such a beast! I have not gotten to it yet. I run into the same issue with it that I do KDM. I really want to be able to leave that game set up and out because it's so big and game sessions can be only an hour or so each but set up is time consuming and I just don't want to deal with it day after day when I am going through a full RPG style campaign. One day I will have a dedicated pet-free room where a gaming table will live and it will be GLORIOUS!

I can only speak to one on this list and its Mansions of Madness, a definite top 5 game. Many years ago our family began with Catan. That game and its expansions hold a special place in my heart. Number one for me has to be Castles of Burgundy. Also would include Marvel Legendary with many expansions. And you have to try Nemesis wow!!!! Great video!

Mansions is a great one for sure! I have only ever played one game of Catan that I can remember, which is always really funny to me. I have heard great things about Castles of Burgundy! Stronghold, 2nd Ed, is solid for 2 players, when you're in the mood for a "hold on, let me think" game. There's a castle. There are orcs outside the castle. If any orcs get into the castle in 7 days, the attackers win. If 7 days pass and the castle hasn't yet fallen, the defenders win. Most of the game is bluffing, calculation, and seeing if you can get your opponent to overcommit. There are a handful of key places where a little luck creeps into the game, so you have to be flexible enough to jump on the lucky breaks when you get them.

I just got HORRIFIED by Prospero Hall games with Universal Studios. It's a cooperative game where you must save a village from, well, the classic universal studios monsters (Dracula, Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, the Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's Monster and the Bride) The art is very nice and you get actual minis for the monsters which I intend to paint. Yay!! I LOVE that you're taking the time to talk about board games! Literally all the painting I do are board game minis (the closest I've gotten to true "minis" gaming is a relatively recent purchase of "Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault" and several of its factions). I could go on forever about board games, but I'll just make a few quick points: -I love that you're into very narrative/thematically-rich games - those are totally my jam! -I adore legacy-style games. "Pandemic Legacy Season 1" gave me some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, though "Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated" was probably going to surpass even that great game (however the pandemic interrupted our campaign). -I wouldn't have seen Betrayal as a 2-player game, but that system you and your husband came up with sounds like it would work great! -I won't spam your channel with a link, but about 6 months ago I made a video about my top 15 "best with 2 players" games, if you're interested in my perspective on the topic.

I had such high hopes for Betrayal but it really let my group down (non-legacy). I suspect we just happened to hit some of the more obtuse or confusing betrayals in the two playthroughs I've been a part of, and we didn't really know how to proceed. It was a let down after a pretty fun first-half. I think that making such a dynamic game results in really high highs and low lows.
@HobbyNight
@HobbyNight 3 жыл бұрын
There are some odd ones in there and they aren’t all hits, so I can completely understand that! I would recommend the Legacy edition of your group wants to give it another shot. The themes of the betrayals are driven by the over arching narrative presented by the legacy format and so I have found they’ve all been interesting and enjoyable, and you still won’t see them all as you play! Plus when and how they choose to present different types of monster and such is dependent on the era you are currently playing in which i find very charming.

never really played a lot of board games... though a few do pop into mind... Catan is one as is Titan...Bloodbowl as well... there's also a tile based one where you fight your way thru zombies trying to get to the towns helipad to escape... but for me the reason my board game time is low is simple, MOST of my time was playing various tabletop war games such as 40K and Battletech/Mechwarrior "the FASA version"... or i was role playing, everything from D&D to any World of Darkness "ie Werewolf or Vampire, even Fae once" or eventually using the Hero System... and if i need time travel i also have the "Doctor Who" RPG.... sadly though it's been a LONG while since i've had the chance to play ANY of these....

Betrayal at the House on the Hill is the game that convinced me that the gaming group I had joined through work was primarily a group that gathered to socialize while they played board games, and not the other way 'round. I played BatHotH several times with that group. My take is: the game is more a story that you experience than it is a game you play. I say this because the mechanics are very far removed from 'best play wins'. Very often you have little control over what happens to your character. Mansions of Madness is slightly better in that regard but still very much in the same vein.

Nice! Haha yea, I hear you. My only real complaint about Betrayal is that it requires at least 3 people to really work best. We have ways to fudge the rules to make them work at 2 but it's so much better with a larger group....which has been hard to do this past year and a half.🙃

@@HobbyNight Another fun game with a minimum of 3 people is Roadkill Rally. The board is a series of tiles that are randomly placed & you score points by running over pedestrians or shooting the other drivers. It's basically Deathrace 2000 as a boardgame.

1. Train games are fun, but dated, as in, "What's a train?" 2. If you like "My City" you might try "Princes of Florence." 3. Nothing like "Time Stories" on the market. Kudos to the developer for thinking outside the box. 4. Betrayal is great, but I like the Baldur's Gate version better. It has more cooperative quests to fit with the D&D party concept. "One Deck Dungeon" is also available as a computer game on Steam. That's how I play. "Root"... just plain awesome. It is also available on Steam. "Kingdom Death Monster" Never played. Guess I add it to my list. 1. Unfortunately, I bought the first edition which had... problems. Having bought the original, I couldn't justify buying it again. Also, Betrayal fills the same need for me. One of my favorites and game I teach people to play as a first game: "Jump Drive" If you haven't played "Jump Drive," drop what you're doing and immediately go to your local game store and buy it. It will be $25 well spent. It's a card game and takes about 15 minutes to play. You can teach someone to play in one game. When you play the second game, and you will, you cover strategy. At the end of the second game, you can give the new player their diploma and congratulate them on graduation. They will likely beat you the next game if they haven't already. Now, this is the insidious part. This is the gateway game for three other games. You'll bring out "Roll for the Galaxy" next. After a few games of that, you'll introduce them to "Race for the Galaxy." Then, when they think it can't get any better, pull out "New Frontiers" and blow their minds. Yes, everything they learned in the previous games helps teach them to play "New Frontiers." Each game builds on the mechanics from the previous games. You can also find "Roll" and "Race" as computer games on Steam. "Hey Steam, where's my New Frontiers?" ;)

We play a lot of Betrayal, but the Widow's Walk expansion holds the title of "Only Expansion We Have Ever Bought, But Then Removed". Far too many of the betrayals are poorly written and you shouldn't have to get online to figure out the consensus of how the betrayal is "supposed" to work. We really do need to pick up the Legacy version at some point though. We did just finish season 2 of Pandemic and only have a few scenarios left in Gloomhaven, so this might be a good time.

Nice list, already checked my local game store for Mansions of Madness, out of stock... Over the last year I actually got into the habit of paining my board game miniatures. So i would be interested of seeing some content like this. Many games look so much better with painted material. Although while doing so i realised some games, especially older ones, have realy bad sculpts. I alway recommend: Chaos in the Old World. The game is great, the miniatures aren't. A large enough collection of chaos demons might do the trick though. Android Netrunner, my all time favovite 2 player game.

Pandemic, Reign of Cthulhu, and Forbidden Island. Adult daughters are big on Clue. All varieties of Clue. All. A friend of theirs left the first two Villainous games. My girls said the rules were too hard. No. Nope. Told them try one of my rule books from one of my conflict games. 15 20 30 pages a lot of small print. Now that is hard ( not after the first 5 or 10). Trivial Pursuit. Star Wars, Harry Potter, LOTR. Granddaughter-6-likes Horrified, but get bored after about 1/2 hour. She kicks me good on Monopoly Jr, Cooties, Candy land. What you have done is convinced me to get the Betrayal Legacy. The second you said that it can be played basic style as well as the legacy way, well that sold me. I may not have someone to play the game with now but If I have to I'll bribe my daughters to play...

I would say Kingdom Death is by far my favorite. It has beautiful miniatures, great mechanics and aesthetics but the main thing is the narrative story we just love it and have played several campaigns including all the current expansions. The main don fall I find with this game is there are no instructions on how to assemble the minis and the official site I find is lacking as not everything has instructions online but there is an unofficial site called Vibrant Lantern which has a more complete collection of instructions as well as other helpful information.

Betrayal's my favorite game! 🙂 If I may, for me, the obvious "if you like Betrayal, you've gotta try..." game is Nemesis. In some ways, they're polar opposites (goofy vs intense, short vs long, easy-to-teach vs involved, etc.), but in others they're very similar (horror, exploration, betrayal, etc.). At least for me, they scratch a very similar itch. 😊 I'm sure you're busy & get swamped with suggestions, so I'm sorry for adding to that. All I'm saying is that if you haven't played it & get a chance to, especially with Mansions & Betrayal as your 1 & 2, maybe do. 😉 Nemesis is almost certainly gonna appeal.
