As a bike mechanic I was always asked about upgrades. This was far easier if it was a regular customer and even better if I had riden with them to match there ride style, budget and what they expected. Sometimes they would be suprized when I pointed them away from carbon. As an example: the Ritchey WCS Alloy bars are ultra lite being just a few grams more than carbon. The price left money for better tires, a lightweight alloy wheel set (which makes more sense in the wet and grime covered roads of Washington state. A cassette and chain rings that had a better gear range for our mountains and quality pedals and shoes for a positive power to the road. Carbon for the win if second are needed when racing. First the weekend warrior alloy fits the bill for longevity since many of our customers dont clean and care for there bikes to keep carbon from galvanic destruction. Affordability so that the most upgrades possible can be done to give a better over all better ride.

This is a great response. Can you also recommend a good set of alloy disc break wheels? I'm a heavy guy that uses 30mm tires on my endurance road bike.

What would you recommend as a routine for preventing galvanic corrosion on carbon bikes? Witch areas should get special attention? Thanks!
@joeottsoulbikes415
@joeottsoulbikes415 4 жыл бұрын
@@thiagobartolo keeping the bike clean is the number one thing. The worst cases I have seen all resulted from riders that would put away a wet bike and never clean it. The corrosion doesn't happen to the carbon on it's own. Only areas where metal makes contact with the carbon and on bikes where the manufacturer did not put a barrier material between the two for protection. The biggest culprit for starting corrosion is salt water. Even salty air in a coastal area can do it. I've seen a bike damaged because someone's garage door was always open and faced the water at a beach side house. Cleaning and then applying a little dialectic grease to areas where carbon and metal meet like dropouts and frame tubes helps. If you have a fairly modern Trek, Giant, Specialized or other big named frame you really have little to think about because materials and processes have improved. Its frames older than say 8 plus years that develope issues.

I got my first ever bike fit with assistance from my ex-colleague, it turned out my saddle was too far forwards and apparently, I had to run max. aft on my 20 mm setback seatpost, a saddle setup I never knew I'd run after seeing said setup on others' bikes. Combined with a Specialized Toupe Comp Gel, I have never been this comfortable on my bike.👌

I would say it depends on the bike fitter because you can get good ones and bad ones but the most important is not to change the fit after just one ride. Myself I have thrown away the bike fit I got because it just didn’t work for me but it could work for you. I have gone to what I feel is the best for me.

Pedals to me provided power I didn’t know I was capable of. I got mountain bike clip on for my road bike since I live in the foothills of California much of my rides incide climbing. I live in Washington state where it rains almost every day from November to March. Many of those rain days are a very light drizzle or mist like rain that is not bad to ride in. From April to October we get very little rain. So it is a thing of riding life to have mud guards or full fenders for half of the year. I guess on the up side, if you are geared up for riding in the rain you can ride all year long. We dont get snow very often and it almost never gets to freezing temperatures. When they talk about mud guards I definitely understand.

It sounds daft: brake calipers and/or pads. I upgraded my tiagra calipers to 105 and the difference is very noticeable. Better brakes mean more confidence when riding twisty descents, it's always more fun knowing you're not going to crash! Otherwise: gear cables, go for fully lined for long lasting crisp shifting.

I have a bike that I put Dra Ace 7900 calipers old school 1051 SLR levers (I use down tube shifters) and Vision Trimax 25KB wheels and the stoping power even when wet is amazing. Lowering rolling resistance doesn't have to cost a lot of money. I'd say one of the best, cheapest ways to lower rolling resistance would be to use ultra-light butyl tubes (best to start with light road tires). These ultra-light tubes (mine weighs 62 grams, size 700cX25) can rival the weight of latex tubes (45-70 grams), and are so much easier to install. They also cost less and maintain their air pressure better than latex tubes. Your regular butyl tube is fine (it weighs 100 grams or more), but it adds a lot of unneeded rolling resistance that you can get rid of by adding these ultra-light tubes. They cost approx., $7 USD where I buy mine.

@@Jeff-bd4gg Sick tube. Supersonics are the lightest butyl tube on the market (I could be wrong). I own a Giant ultra-light butyl tube (62 grams), on an 80 mm valve. My tube cost $7 USD (high value for price). A pair of supersonics cost 29 USD on Amazon (US). For me (an avid cyclist), that's still a good deal and I've owned supersonics. But they're too pricey for casual cyclists. However, you can get these tubes on-the-low if you shop around or be patient for a deal somewhere. Peace and safe riding.

I’d say we can add the pedals changing because sometimes they are « hard to click » and heavy (especially old ones), and of course, work on the settings and measurements of your bike. You can have the best bike ever, if you don’t have a good position, you will not be better than with an average bike but with an excellent position and settings 🤗

Tubeless tyres aren’t worth it. In my limited experience with both road and MTB, they just dumped sealant everywhere (where there were tiny cuts in the tyre) and left you stranded in the middle of nowhere .Thanks for the false sense of security, I was once 40km in the woods with a flat tyre, with no mobile signals.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzfaq.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

@@MountainVisions Same here but disagree on any blanket conclusion either way. I've seen reliable reviewers slam top-brand/price carbon products for poor build quality. These brands rely to an unwarranted extent on hype and brand mystique developed by their marketing departments and willingly accepted by their often clueless but flush customers - think Apple computers and gravel bikes. In reality, bikes are very simple machines with very simple components made from materials that have been around for decades. Not all Chinese products are knock-offs and it's worth remembering that the majority of top $ brands get their stuff made in China by the same companies you claim are only capable of producing unsafe products.
