Great video! The 40 breeder is such a great tank! I have a 40 breeder with a huge colony of multis, 40+ after starting with 5 about a year ago. I also had a 40 breeder with Julie’s, Calvus, Leleupi, Buscheri. It could work for many Tanganyikans. Currently that tank will soon house some Rainbow cichlids, but the possibilities are endless for small cichlids.

This was really interesting:) Not everyone has space for larger tanks but would still enjoy unique fish (unique at least to the novice fishkeeper.) I would love to try the community of Apistos and Rams. Great explanation of numerous options:)

I was gifted a 40 breeder and Fluval AquaClear 110 for my birthday. I have a 20g high and Fluval Spec V planted, so I was looking to have something different for the 40 when I set it up. Looking to do a Cichlid tank so this video is great!

Planning to set up some cichlids in my 40 gallon tank soon, recently had to strip and reseal my tank and donated my rummynose tetras because of the stress from emptying the tank and resetting them up they were starting to die off. The only things in my tank currently is assassin snails and plecos that both are breeding like crazy. hoping I can get a handful of colorful bunch of cichlids that wont eat the baby plecos and are good sized to attract the eye.

Do the Calvus and Geophagus get along? They have slight similar body structure, thought ot could be a nice combo.

What about a Jewel Cichlid (or a pair)? Or maybe a Kribensis with some Congo Tetras?

The kribensis/Congo tank is a great tank. I have a 75 with around 15 Kribensis, 6 congos and a few other fish. Kribensis are a lot of fun if you have a group of them. The females have “dance competitions” to show who has the prettiest purple belly, hence the name pelvichromis pulcher.

I have a custom size 40 gallon tank. 31.5 (L) x 14.2 (W) x 25.6 (H). Would any of these mentioned in the video work with my tank? Mbunas are the ones I’m looking at. Yellow labs or the a small group of saulosi. 1 male and 4 or 5 females. What are your thoughts?

Wow this was a great video and those fish were so beautiful. I am currently enjoying my 90 gal African cichlid tank. These fish are so neat with 2 blood parrots they were rescues and came with my 90 gal. I have 4 clown loaches they are so funny to watch. I did just add a turquoise severum to my 90 gal with my south African cichlids. He is so neat and so cool looking. I got the idea from you guys. Can't wait till my juveniles get bigger lol. How many can you keep in a 90 gal aquarium? African cichlids? Fish total?

Thanks for watching! It depends on the type of African cichlid, but generally I would say 25-35 mbuna or 15-20 peacocks in a 90 gallon. Give or take a few

Thanks cichlids bro's beautiful membuna cichlids but i had two in my 55 gallon tank and they both out grow my 55 year gallons so to me I think 40 gallons are a little too small for cichlids I think 75 gallons and up is more better but very nice membuna tank very beautiful 👍🏼👍🏼

Great video. I am currently cycling a new 40 and I am wondering if you think an electric blue acara, a firemouth, and a small school of barbs would work well in a 40 gallon?

You could keep a single acara OR a pair of firemouths, no space for the barbs

I have a pair of Blue German Rams in a 40g breeder with a dozen Red Eyed Tetra. I'm thinking of moving them to a 75 I'm close to getting setup and adding a few more rams and tetra. Then doing a rescape on that 40 and moving my 2 female apistogramma cacatuoides to there and again adding to their number. All of my tanks are heavily planted.

Good video again. I was thinking of having some American cichlids in a very big tank of about 8 feet long tank but not a Convict. The rest of the fish you mentioned for tankmates should be o.k so do you think I should just keep single fish of each species for example all males?

depends on the type. as long as you sort fish by temperament and size as well as having enough cichlids to disperse aggression it should be ok. with American cichlids it can be hard to distinguish the boys from the girls though and many central americans are perfectly capable of hybridizing with related cichlids

Pistograma in a 40 work well with angel, or ram or does the pisto have to be the only center piece type in a 40?

Probably would work. I would just keep numbers low if you go with an angel

I have a 47g with a very similar footprint of a 40g breeder. It has rocks 🪨 and a 2 piece ship with lots of hiding space and also live plants. I currently have a Red Shoulder severum 2"-3", 1 yoyo loach and a albino pleco. What can I put with this severum?

Very nice! I generally recommend a 75 gallon tank for an adult severum. So if you aren’t planning to upgrade, I’d probably avoid adding any other tank mates. Severums do get large
