For the past few decades, the Electronic Store's landscape has changed as today's customers turn to Best Buy, BrandsMart, Target, and Walmart.
It wasn’t long before they invested money in now-defunct stores such as Circuit City, Comp USA, and HHGregg. If you are excited to ride down memory lane, we have a Top 6 of the most recognizable Electronic Stores that no longer exist.
***This Video features "6" Stores instead of "5" since two stores from the list are closely related.

I worked at Circuit City for 14 years. They made many mistakes. Divx, stopped selling major appliance just before the housing market exploded, the elimination of commission sales counselors, the elimination of spiffs ( basically was 10% say of an accessory's price) that you made from selling it, or a commission from selling a service plan..the big layoff in 2007 that I was a part of. Why layoff your best trained employees who over the years built a customer base. That layoff was the last nail in the coffin. As it pissed off even those who didn't shop at Circuit City. None of my family or in- laws ever shopped there again, not did any of there friends. And another one was hiring executives that Best Buy fired to run the company...

If I remember correctly, Allied had a section with the Heathkit brand that had ready to assemble kits for all kinds of components from vohm testers to tube testers and everything in between. I’d seen a tv video about a street section in New York City called radio row. It was a section that had all kinds of electronic components imaginable. When they began procuring property for the World Trade Center the city somehow forced them out and caused them to close. I would be interested to know the names of businesses and what they specialized in. I remember in the sixties and seventies even J.C. Penney’s had high quality stereo components as well as Service Merchandise. They had sound rooms where you could crank up the amplifiers and give the speakers a workout.

Really enjoying your videos. I didn't realize Fry's had gone out of business. I didn't even know it was an electronics chain until one was featured in Mr. Robot. I had heard the name as a sponsor of a golf tournament before that, but didn't know the type of business. Glad to see REX as an honorable mention; bought by first VCR there almost 30 years ago (still have it around). Circuit City had horrible customer service in-store whenever I went (which wasn't often; probably could count the number visits on both hands). Went to an H.H. Gregg once: walked in, looked at the prices, and walked back out, never to return.

I bought a 25" colour Sharp TV there and later a great pair of Sennheiser headphones, both I still own. I bought them on sale-cheaper than Best Buys at the time. My dad and I used to belong to the free battery a month club at Radio Shack. I didn't care much for their stereos-preferred their Tandy Leather store for my craft supplies and kits. Bought my first cd player at Circuit City too.. Wasn't Gateway a place to rent before you buy? There was a store near me, but in the long run, one would play more for a computer than if one paid all at once (like those rent to own furniture stores).
@undergroundretail
@undergroundretail 2 жыл бұрын
Which store did you purchase the Sharp TV from? I did some research on Tandy Leather, while completing my most recent video. Gateway was indeed a showroom like Rooms to Go, where one would look at the product just to place an order online to have it shipped from a warehouse.

Thanks for watching! It’s notated in the description of why it’s 6 stores and still considered 5. Tweeter and HiFi Buys are the same company.

I have heard and remember Hi Fi Buys, but never shopped at one, been to Circuit City definitely miss them, reminded me of Best Buy, but they were too expensive where Best Buy is a lot cheaper, HHgregg sucked, good riddance to them, and the honorable mentions never heard of or been to one, CompUsa is the only one I do remember vaguely, and lastly never been to Fry’s, but they were not coinvient at all. 🤔

@@undergroundretail No problem anytime! 👍🏻 Yes Circuit City was amazing no doubt, and yeah HHGregg sucked overpriced and boring, and Hifi Buys never shopped there. 🤔

@@undergroundretail no. I tried to get a job at the outlet in Sacramento. The employees, behaved as actors. Different uniforms for different levels of responsibility. Weird. Too funky for me. They were only in business for 3/4 years, I think. I did buy some cool audio gear there.
