Great review of important tips for all TPI owners, everything covered here is clearly stated in the owners manual- READ IT before riding. There's alot to learn about these new TPI bikes. They work GREAT in stock form, don't mess with the engineering. Juan- Nevada City, Ca. (Nice chainsaw mount ;-)

you definitely should ride one of those TPI 300s. I just picked one up. They feel so smooth they almost feel underpowered compared to the carb models. I happen to like that feeling more than a holy shit my arms are falling off feeling so for me it's perfect!

I have the Husqvarna TE300I 2019. After 2 trips to my dealer, I have updated the factory map to the latest revision and it runs better, less leanness. I also run the Pro Circuit Platinum pipe with a FMF Turbine Core spark arrestor. Overall it is improved, not perfect but is so much fun to ride!

I own this bike - need to mention a problem with that oil cap. If you fill up to where he did in video, trail riding combined with a poor design of the cap causes oil to seap out while you ride. Solution: fill so that the reservoir is full but not the tube up to the cap. That leaves some room for the oil to slosh around without being up against the cap. Kind of sucks that KTM or an aftermarket company hasn't made a cap that holds a better seal... Also get a pipe guard!!! Haha

Nice job Justin. Quick question though. I have never fouled a plug on a modern 2 stroke. None of my riding buddies have either. We have several thousand hours at this point of engine time on our 2 strokes without fouling a plug. I stopped carrying one in my riding packs because of this. Have you actually fouled a plug on a modern (2010 or newer) big bore 2 stroke?
@rmatvmc
@rmatvmc 5 жыл бұрын
I carry them and usually end up giving it to somebody else that fouled a plug. Last year I gave one to a guy on a newer KTM, and another guy on a 2004ish RM125. I know another guy that had to hike out of the canyon last year for a fouled plug - he had no plug or tools. But no, I haven't fouled a plug in a long time. I don't see the TPI bikes fouling them too easily, but for whatever reason, KTM nad Husky are having issues with guys running the wrong one. I actually pack one even when on a 4-stroke - just in case!.....Justin

Good question, I also carry a plug 'just cause' but haven't fouled one in over 10yrs. Had older mx 2 strokes that would foul them all the time... interesting as I haven't thought to hard about it.

Kyle, I would agree, buuuut just last week my buddy fouled a plug on his 2016 300 XCW, roughly 80 hours on it, he even thought the jetting was good. I was scared as I was on my 350 and didn't have a 2-stroke plug and he has never carried one, but I had previously told him he should.....well, he actually had one...we were 40 miles from the truck!!

This video didn't age well lol. 1) Power valve can still be adjusted as FI doesn't monitor power valve but throttle position and engine RPM. To get the best power delivery for your riding style it's still recommended to adjust your power valve. 2) DO NOT USE IRIDIUM SPARK PLUG !! KTM went back to the old school plug as the IRIDIUM plugs have been melting and destroying engines. Issues: Crankcase pressure sensors have been coming from the factory bad. Low end burble, stalling, fouling plugs etc are tell tale signs you've got a bad CCPS. Do not adjust idle like the factory states in the manual. Air screw is for idle to 1/3 throttle A/F. Get the slaven's idle screw, do it proper.

i played with the powervalve on my 2019 250 and it's like a different bike. S3 sell a easy adjuster for these bikes that can be turned by hand without the key, and on dirtbike channel the guy says you can adjust it. i had constant bogging and spluttering issues, the bike wouldn't rev like 2 stroke normally do and with the yellow spring in the bike was far too docile for my liking. i put the red spring in and a new spark plug and it's been a different bike since. bogging has gone, it runs crisp and clean, way more responsive and feels lively like a 2stroke should.

Man, tough call. I liked the TX300 AER fork and linkage shock better, but I liked the power curve better on the 250. I don't think it was necessarily because of the TPI, but 250s rev out better. At the same time, I missed the bottom end grunt on the 300 when log hopping. All in all, I loved both bikes. I think for me I would want the 250 TPI with the XC suspension. - Justin

Still on the fence about this bike. Run the 17 300 Six Days and love tuning with the power valve. Just put the Lectron carb on and it really woke the bike up across the board but I've always run rich down low for tight single track and it's difficult now. I hope after-market companies can sort this out. What would a Fatty pipe do to TPI bike?
@tu-mother
@tu-mother 6 жыл бұрын
because these bikes are set up with fuel efficiency and emissions in mind, then run slightly lean ( where you make optimum power and efficiency) i have heard (mind you on the internet) of people complaining it’s too lean and ending up with cylinder scarring. this aside the electronic system doesn’t rely on a number a jets and therefore can adjust to the amount of fuel to air infinitely. meaning on paper that shouldn’t be a problem.
@Mikael_Partti
@Mikael_Partti 6 жыл бұрын
Isaac Yeates you can just go to your ktm dealer and they will tune the ECU that it runs richer. We have done it and there is no reason why carb version would be better
@wfodavid
@wfodavid 6 жыл бұрын
The question would be can they tune the bike to run richer at lower RPMs, and crisp a mid to top? It's an old trick that racers have used for years to increase traction in tight single track. I'll be interested to talk with Jarvis to see what he thinks about the new TPI bikes when he comes back down to Texas in December.

I see that you still have the safety bar mounted on your saw ( trail Tech web site and KZfaq show it removed ) and it looks like you are unable to use the front lock, It also looks like you are using wire ties as well as the rubber straps. The first few tips I all ready knew because of my two stroke street bikes KTM has had to be specific with it's oil recommendation. Because fools just think they can run regular premix in an oil injection system great way to lock up your bike! You must run a oil injection specific oil they are thinner and designed to work with oil injection regular premix is too thick and will plug things up causing oil starvation.

Ryan Donahue But still the oil pump needs replacing periodically which means a failure point, possibly premature and unexpected, tpi mapping adjustable if you want to? I'm still not sure. @BobcatSig
@BobcatSig 6 жыл бұрын
I could make a pedantic joke about disc brakes, ABS, traction control or mono rear shocks. Technology advances and it's done so here in a very well done package. Sure, pumps fail - just like any item. The tuning really isn't needed. The ECU does it for you. It's total shift in the way we think about dirt and enduro bikes. Sure, it's not selectable ride modes like street bikes - yet - but once can buy the KTM selector switch and get two different power modes.

Hi, I know this is going to be off topic but just hear me out. So, I ride a 2016 KTM 105 Supermini, and noticed the front brake was feeling a bit spongy. No big deal, just check the pads and bleed it right? The pads looked fine, and there was no need to replace them any time soon. The only thing left to do was bleed the brakes. As I do this, some bubbles start coming out, but eventually I start getting no lever. At this point I'm pushing fluid up through the caliper with a syringe, and using the gravity method, no dice. I spent a good hour after this, and at this point I've done all I can and there is completely new fluid throughout the system (the brake is back but it still feels spongy). Now comes the confusing part. If I'm braking normally, it's almost as if the system looses pressure, and I have to pull the lever further to get it to engage again (or pump it repeatedly). This can get kind of sketchy because the models previous to 2018 are known to have a rear brake fading issue. I cannot figure this out for the life of me and feel that my results in races are suffering because I'm riding more timid than usual. Thanks, kind of a long post but I am utterly confused and find it hard to describe this problem.
@SkinnySkinch
@SkinnySkinch 6 жыл бұрын
dude sounds like you may need to rebuild your caliper/ master cylinder. the piston might not be moving or may be stuck on one side and only sort of moving when you pull that lever. If you are 100% sure your lines DO NOT have ANY air trapped in them somewhere, then the next step I would do is rebuild your caliper and master cylinder. Considering you race I assume you work your bike fairly hard. not uncommon to have to rebuild those and they sell rebuild kits everywhere online for pretty cheap. $20 or less for each kit I would think. I like to shop ebay and buy new take off parts so I have fresh backups. lot of sellers buy entire brand new left over model dirt bikes for cheap and they completely part them out on ebay especially KTMs. can find a lot of brand new OEM parts for much cheaper than buying OEM direct. Can probably find an entire MC/brake line/caliper for $80-$100 brand new OEM on ebay if you look hard enough. hope this helps.

Now would Red Line Fully Synthetic 2T Racing Oil work? I've tried many oils and literally no other oil performs nearly as good as this Red Line 2T synthetic racing oil, it's optimized for Powervalve 2stroke racing/trail bikes, but I use it on everything including my 2 stroke scooter which has a 23cc 2 stroke engine which I beat the living hell out of, went to install a big bore kit on it and mind you the engine is 24 years old, the piston is in mint condition, looks like new, even next to the new one. Also it seems to improve power and responsiveness all over the rev range.
@SkinnySkinch
@SkinnySkinch 6 жыл бұрын
as long as the oil does not say "FOR PREMIX ONLY" on the bottle you should be able to use it. It will say something along the lines of "for use in premix and separate lubrication systems." this will be in the fine print somewhere on the back. I just googled red line fully synthetic and found this "Each product works in both premix or injection systems" so yes you can use this product. I have never heard of it and unless you have a large supply of it or just have used it forever in kart racing or something and really trust it I would just use the motorex that KTM recommends. You can buy it on amazon for pretty cheap with free one day shipping even. but either way looks like that oil is suitable for injection type systems so yes it's okay to use.

Good video but you're wrong at 9:24. The bike does not adjust for altitude changes in real-time. It takes a reading from the barometric sensor every time you stop the engine. Thus, if you ride from 4k feet to 9k feet without stopping the engine you'll experience the same lean condition you did after trucking it there. You literally only need to stop it long enough for the piston to stop moving. Kill it on a downhill with clutch pulled and fire it up a moment later.

Tim Newman the bike likely utilizes one pressure sensor for both cylinder inlet pressure and barometric pressure, meaning this sensor will only read BP correctly when the engine is not running. I’ve encountered automotive diagnostic sensor that work in a similar fashion.

Page 137 of the owners manual "if the vehicle is ridden with the engine running at various heights above sea level, the ambient pressure is programmed on an ongoing basis". Goes on to say if engine is not running with changes then it needs to be reprogrammed, like mentioned in this video. Unless the manual is wrong then it clearly states the bike adjusts when running.

Redacted because I thought my comment might have been a bit harsh. It's a good machine with some new tech issues. I just haven't been impressed with them or any of the 4 strokes...from any company. Maintenance is expensive, they tend to die from some little farkle slipping out of place. The EPA just needs to leave the industry alone so they can go back to making solid reliable 2 strokes that just need basic maintenance, and don't cost as much as a Honda Africa Twin.

pro tip, i have a 2020 300 tpi. Buy a Get Athena fuel programmer richen up the mixture at low rpm, lean out the stupidly rich mid range, and richen it up at high rpm. 2 strokes live and die by AFR. if you run a stock 300 tpi at wide open throttle for 3-4 seconds the afr will go into 15/1 wich is insanely lean. Same with oil, i put in 0.5dl of oil when i fill the tank full, its bullshit that it will damage anything. the reason for the bad fueling and lubrication is due to emissions. Ktm knows that 2 strokes will not be road legal because of the emissions of a good running 2 stroke so they have to cover their ass by saying dont do, this dont do that. Talk to any proffesional ktm/husky mechaninc and not their PR department and they will say the same

Thanks for this video man I honestly was not sure who to believe out there. There is another channel a guy called KTMANDHUSKY and he is actually selling parts to enable your bike to be able to run a small amount of premix in the tank in addition to the oil injection. I was tempted to do it until I watched this video. I picked up my 300 TPI a few weeks ago and have a few videos out on it check out the channel if you want. Did you mess with your idle screw at all? Especially after installing the rekluse? I noticed as soon as I had my rekluse in that suppppper low idle that these TPIs have didnt work. My bike would not idle in gear no matter how I had my rekluse adjusted. I guess there is a SLIGHT bit of drag no matter what with these rekluses that isn't there with stock clutch. So to remedy that I turned what ktm refers to as the idle screw up and that fixed the issue. however it then made my bike hard to start bc it was so lean. long story short I ended up having to take that tiny little idle screw out and replace it with a screw that I can turn on the fly. The stock "idle screw" is an air screw not an idle screw. did you guys have any similar issues with your bike after the rekluse and have you guys messed with that REAL idle screw that is super lock tighted in there or have you only used the air screw to make your idling adjustments? I am so curious as to why KTM did this and tried to make that actual idle screw a permanent fixture instead of another place of adjustability like on all their 4 stroke throttle bodies. Love all your guys videos keep some more coming about these TPI bikes please.

I watched the same vid and understand his ideology. I still think they have some things to learn, but the after-market industry will figure it out. Until then I'm sticking with my 17 and will play with the Lectron. Since we are leaving for Colorado next week I'm going use the Lectron. Hoping the bike runs as well up there as it does here in Texas. Re-jetting on the trail sucks.
@SkinnySkinch
@SkinnySkinch 6 жыл бұрын
Lectron should work flawlessly between 0-5000 and still really really good from 5,000-10,000. I have one on my '12 YZ250 and my '18 TX300 and I ride close to sea level where I live but often ride in the Appalachian mountains never more than 5,000 ft though. Bikes run absolutely perfect with the Lectron. Some people say they take away a little of the hit off bottom but Im not good enough rider to notice nor need that power lol.

The idea of not touching the power valve doesn't really make sense because I have seen a number of these bikes and all of them have different power valve settings from the factory... Some are two turns in, some are one turn in, some are even three turns in... I made my power valve which came from the factory almost two full turns in, flush with the case and I am so much happier with the power band now... I can't say it's the best for everyone but I would not have any fear whatsoever with messing around with different tension and different springs... Why would they make it adjustable if you shouldn't adjust it?

According to the internet every symptom you have is cancer and all dirt bikes explode after 10 hours. No one ever goes online to say their bike is perfect with out any problems, they are too busy riding. The only people you hear from is the ones with problems. The number of broken bikes reported are not a true representation of how reliable the bike actually is.

Can you please post "all the TPI bikes blowing up" please? That is total BS and you know it. The worst problem they have is the sensors that in some bikes go bad and it runs crappy until you replace $40 sensor. There is only one guy, "the Dirt Bike Rider" that shows how his bike blew up (TPI). But I dare you to watch his videos on how he treats his bike, it's like he's trying to kill it. Smashes it into walls, overheats it on purpose, full throttle for several minutes going through mud and sand, just abusing it hell. Then he goes on and says there are issues with the way they made the bike. It's a total joke. He ended up breaking the plastic oil bottle and kept riding it out of oil and it blew up. Anyway, these bikes are amazing and very durable, they are winning every cross country race and watch the beach race in Europe and see what these bikes go through. They are tough as nails.

Rock Mountain ATV MC - You forgot to mention that before any riding is done newly obtained KTM dirtbikes should be taken apart and *grease* should be applied on all moving parts that require grease. KTM is notorious for not greasing the rear end especially/forks/swing arms etc.., basically even if its brand new with 0 miles you should always take apart the bike and apply your favorite grease gratuitously (There are component specific greases out there as well as im sure you know, which I'm sure is helpful, I imagine manufacturers cheap out on grease because it's a maintenance job that people often neglect to do after they take it out of storage and ride it for the first time in months and its hard to blame the bike for failed components, making it appear to be the fault of rider abuse, but if you grease your dirtbike, SXS or ATV religiously every 6 months or so, it will last 10 times longer than if you never do it.. Even cheap chinese pit bikes or quads will be infinitely better if they're greased by the owner upon purchasing, in fact especially the cheaper bikes

No offense but I think you are stuck in the past there. I have purchased 4 brand new KTM dirt bikes in the last 2 year(''17 FE 450, '17 500EXC-F, '18 350XC-F, '19 300XC-W TPI) and literally every single one of them had more than enough in the usual places guys are always complaining about like the linkage, steering stem, etc. Ample grease everywhere. I break mine down every 20 hours to re-grease now. I always still check for some reason but it seems there is 0 issue with greasing these new bikes at least in my case of the few bikes I have had.

I would love to ride a 250 as well to compare. I have a 300 TPI and a TX 300 which is basically the same as the XC300. that TX is a monster compared to my XC-W tpi. they feel like totally different animals. The real comparison I would like to do is between the 250 and 300 of the same version. I really like that super light feeling(250) bike but I also like to lug(300).
