Quality over quantity should be fundamental for any serious book publisher. Low-barrier-to-entry businesses, like KDP, can encourage a short-term profit mentality; hey, it's so easy to kick out tons of books based on superficial changes that offer customers little in terms of REAL value. Customers can sniff this out--BELIEVE IT! Rachel, thanks for encouraging quality-first. :)

You're absolutely right! I feel like a broken record sometimes, but I'm just seeing so many people take that approach of churning out thousands of low-quality books in an attempt to make some short term money. But there will always be room for those that focus on adding value to the consumer by offering high quality, well researched books.

I have some questions in low content KDP. 1)Can we use the same title and design cover for various sizes of the book(like same title and cover for lined 120 pages & lined 200 pages? 2)What categories are journal and notebook supposed to be?

Hi Rachel, thank you so much for your videos! I think that your channel compared to many others claiming to want to help people start with something is exceptionally helpful, you really take the time to show people step-by-step in addition to give valuable information and tips. I wish you success in your business!!! I do have a question, what steps do you take to marketing your books? Thank you in advance!

I'm curious about the time frame. I understand and appreciate placing my focus on quality, but what's a reasonable amount of time to spend on getting one book created and published? Does it generally take 20 hours? or 10? or 40?

Hey Rachel, if you are buying images from Shutterstock or other royalty free websites do you need an extended or standard licence for POD books? I understood it was standard licence that was required but I watched a video the other day that said POD products required extended licence. Thanks!
@RachelHarrisonSund
@RachelHarrisonSund 5 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is to read the licence attached to the particular image you want to use and see what that says. Most of the time a standard licence should be sufficient for book covers, but it's always best to read the licence anyway, just in case.

Hi, I was wondering if I can use the image of a famous figure on the cover. Say for example a youtuber. Would I be able to take a screen grab from one of their public videos. Or for example someone who has given a speech on television, could I then screengrab the clip and use this? Many thanks Rachel!

Hi Rachel, if you’ve used multiple free images on your front cover how would you attribute them?
@RachelHarrisonSund

Hi Amin, I would list them in very small print on the inside, near my copyright information. For example, "Dog photo: 'Name of photographer'", "Flower photo: 'Name of photographer'".

Hi, Rachel. First of all, thank you for this useful information. I have a question regarding 7 keywords that we are allowed to use. In an interview with Kelli you mentioned that you use all 50 characters. I'm guessing those are multiple keywords divided by a comma? Isn't that a potential danger to a user's account in the long term since it's kind of a loophole? What does Amazon consider to be 'keyword stuffing' and what is ok? Thank you again for your amazing tips and input. :)
@RachelHarrisonSund
@RachelHarrisonSund 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! No, I don't use multiple keywords separated by a comma in one slot. It's more like a long-tail keyword phrase. The keyword stuffing that will get you in trouble is trying to stuff keywords into the title, subtitle, etc. It's okay to use keywords there, but it has to sound natural. A few years back people were just using these fields to stuff ridiculous amounts of keywords into them, so that's what they cracked down on. Hope that helps!

I know this is an old video so you might not still be responding to comments, but I've seen people publish coloring books where they've basically traced images from a google image search. How are they getting away with that? Is that even legal?

Hey Rachel Loved your video. Curious as to when your course will come out. :) Also I am curious how many Low Content Books you published before your first 2k month.
@RachelHarrisonSund
@RachelHarrisonSund 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Karla! My course is coming out Nov. 19th!!!! I don't have an exact figure for you, but my guestimate is about 300-400. Having said that, sales really ramped up for the holiday season, so ended up making several thousand per month more without publishing many more books.

Did you have permission to give that Colllier quote? Huh. No, just kidding. :} I will admit to being a little overwhelmed w/KDP requirements, but I think I read that Amzn has tiers for how much you can publish. In other words if you publish books that dont get sales then you cant publish more. If they do sell then your tier is jumped up to an additional number you can try to sell (i.e. from 10 to 25, etc). Also on Vecteezy I noticed that free images can only be licensed for free to a limit of 50 copies for printed material. Which seems to me to defeat the purpose of using the free option, since clearly the publishing author is hoping for more than 50 copies to be printed.
@RachelHarrisonSund
@RachelHarrisonSund 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, nope; I definitely don't have permission to use that quote! While Amazon does have tiers for Merch, there aren't any for KDP. I recommend free images for those starting out, but once they start making sales, I recommend purchasing images for exactly the reason you point out.

In your discussion of category violations you refer to Amazon processes. In at least one respect the fault is at Amazon in that the are focused on profit rather than quality (Yes you said something similar). Were they to use reviewers, e.g., real humans, to read and critique and categorize books the problem would be minimal. Yes, the process could be an expense driver, but actually, it need not. There are people out in the world who love to read, are critical (like me) and would do the job for free. Send me a free, bound volume, at no cost, and ask me to write a review and supply suggested categories, I am there. There are many other who would do the same.

Had you actually filed a copyright for your work? I just put up my first journal and I didn't know if I should choose the copyright option or the public domain option. The cover is something I drew, but I don't have an official copyright. Thanks!!
