Hey what’s going on guys, this is AndrewChicken, and welcome back to another video! With three of the four classes out of the way, It’s time to move on to the final class - tanks. The front line class is very powerful - boasting champions with incredibly high healthpools, and the ability to defend an area or push through enemy defenses extremely effectively.
Tanks can be divided into two subclasses - main and off tanks. Main tanks are primarily concerned with defending their team and holding an area - usually the objective or another key choke point - while off tanks are better at pushing alongside their dps and flanks to secure kills and breach enemy defenses. Today, we’ll be discussing the top 5 main tanks in Paladins, and then next week, I’ll release a video going over the top 5 best off tanks in Paladins.

I think Terminus deserves at least number 3 because he can block infinite damage, heal himself and also deal impressive damage if running decimation

I apologize since this will probably sound rude, but it feels like you have a slightly biased outlook on Champions based on their general stats versus the kit synergy that said stats and any related Talents allow. For example: Makoa may have an amazing damage output and a good point tank shield with Half Shell, but he lacks any continuous sustain and his only real sustain is tied to his abilities which require a team that's unaware of him at the moments that count if he doesn't have a point-oriented Support, unlike Ash who has her own continuous sustain capabilities via Indomitable while still having burst healing capabilities. Barik may have a good damage output but you can't guarantee that it'll all focus the same person (something you touched up on when you mentioned "when both of his Turrets are shooting at the same person"), and his kit in-general needs to be balanced out to be used effectively (i.e. running Fuel Efficiency to make good escapes but also having to spec into his sustain, Turret benefits via One Man's Scrap, etc.) and thus can't be used to its full potential. Fernando is a strong point tank with Aegis due to his high effective health between himself and his Shield as well as his powerful sustain via Last Stand, but is basically relegated to off tanking when he uses either of his non-Aegis Talents due to the unforgiving 12 second cooldown of his Shield, unlike Khan who can redeploy his Bulwark in 7 seconds for his non-Lian's Shield Talents. I might not understand much about the game at the moment, but from what I've experienced while playing as and against different Champions of different skill levels, the general synergy of each Champion's kits always seemed to have the largest sway on matchups.

All this talk about the Focusing Lens/Resonance solo healer Ying players and I'm here feeling a little too similar to a Legendary Pokémon trying to escape from Central Park as someone who only plays LE Ying.. Are they seriously this common?

@@Avatapaxn Generally, yes I also only play LE unless there’s another healer but sometimes I’m hesitant to go FL/RES so because the two play styles are really different, it’s kinda hard to adjust to

I've seen people spam for heals even with a LE Ying pocketing them. Worst offender was a ruckus that would rush point and sit on it until he exploded, spamming "Need healing" the entire time

Just missed Terminus and Ash as honorable mentions, and I would change Azzan and Makoa's position. Aside from that I think it's very accurate meta wise on both M&K and Controller

I agree with first part and think makoa and azaan point take are better on different maps so interchangeable imo. Only this should happen is if you had a sticky first 3 draft to counter other team in rank and the other pount tanks got banned/picked.

Gotta say my fave tank is yag, with her acid and hardening plus the talent that heals her for being on point and the 150 unit radar ping she’s got utility and huge point pressure and can quite easily keep a team off the point long enough for her teammates to help her clear the enemies.

Frontlines are by far my strongest class and my main for on-point is usually barik or raum. I find that raum is actually decent on point for his high damage output, forcing the enemy tank(s) to fall back for heals, as well as sapping the enemy team for those sweet soul fragments to stay in the fight for longer. Usually the souls alone are enough to survive a 2v1 on point until teammates come in to clean up.

I'm sad Ash didn't make the cut. Her shield reset combo lets her have near 100% uptime on her shield, while also letting her shoot. Not to mention her knockback let's her keep people off point easily. Sadly, she's a little map dependent and her counters are a little more common in the meta right now

What's a good card distribution for the reset build? Haven't played in a while, much less caught up with card shifts within the meta.

@@jansolo4628 Personally, I run Siege Engine 4, Ramparts 5, and Battlement 2. This makes the shield last the exact amount of time I need to fire all but one shot, and load up Kinetic Burst. As Soon as Kinetic Burst is ready, the shield runs out and I launch whoever's on point, bringing it down to around a 1 second cooldown, or complete reset with chronos. If no one's on point, it's a 6 second cooldown, or much lower with chronos, which is usually called a good shield cooldown for other tanks like Makoa, but it's our worst ;). It also means no one's contesting you on point, so free cap. I also run Percussion 3 because I really like throwing people around, and it means most point tanks have to use their movement ability to get back on point instead of saving it to escape, which does come up every now and again. Then I have War Machine 1 as a filler, since tapping someone for a little bit of damage to get an elim is super easy, it helps to get shield out more frequently if they're not on point but still shooting at you. Main issue is tanks that have mobile shields like Nando and Khan, which can easily block your Kinetic Burst and thus deny your reset, or Tanks like Term that just don't care about your shield (and he can also Shield your reset, I really hate Term). Now, this is as point tank, so you have a dedicated healer. If you're going off tank, then obviously you run the liferip card pretty heavily instead, probably at 5

@@techwizsmith7963 I do think you kinda hit the nail on the head for why Ash isn't considered a great main tank. She kinda struggles when matched up against *other* main tanks. Even Barik, other Ash players and Half Shell Makoa can be challenging to hit with the kinetic burst if they're good at shield-dancing... on top of her damage being some of the lowest in the tank class... she runs a serious risk of just being ignored by the other tank in favor of shooting people behind her. (No practical damage cooldowns, no damage combos, none of her abilities really add any damage beyond her left click).

@@kevingriffith6011 I've never actually had any issues against a Barik or a Makoa, you just gotta get aggressive with them. It's almost like playing an off tank, but on point. It's really just the mobile shields and Tanks that are better at being aggressive and walk through your shield

@@techwizsmith7963 I don't know what bariks you're playing against, but you can't really just walk through their shield, as they'll use the edge of the shield against you. A good barik, Makoa and Ash take advantage of the edge of their shield to block your attacks from any direction you shoot at them, so the odds of landing your shotgun blast on them is about 50/50 in my experience both playing as and against other Ash players. Edit: Barik doesn't really need to walk through your shield, either, since if you go shield to shield vs Barik then Barik just... wins. Both his shield and his damage are better than yours.

Forgefire has a hidden buff which is that without the big dome shield a lot of people just don't notice the flamethrower turret and walk into it, especially in a crowded environment.

@@sneakyy7807 Ash has arguably better sustain and is more oriented to point tanking given how Kinetic Burst moves enemies outwards from Ash's position. Makoa is more off tank oriented because his Dredge Anchor helps forcibly move enemies off a point and towards himself.

The biggest problem with Inara compared to Barik or Fernando is entirely that she tanks with her HP. Inara makes excellent use of a pocket healer to survive on the point, but Barik and Fernando don't need a healer to be effective as both have very large shields on relatively short cooldowns that they can juggle to ensure that they stay strong and healthy. This frees up the support to pocket the DPS while they make more aggressive plays into the Inara's team, which she has a harder time dealing with because she doesn't have any mobility. Barik and Nando also break cauterize *really easily*, so if they DO need the attention of a support they can be sure to get the best of it whenever they need it.

Yes and no, late game inara is better imo, nando and barik shields are useless versus a lot of wrecker 3 dps and bulldozer doesn't get picked a ton for inara because it's not that good.

Inara gets worse as caut gets higher, far more than Barik and Nando do since she doesn't have a great way to reliably shed caut without causing some other problems with how her wall works. Edit: I spent the next three paragraphs repeating my first post. You don't need to read that. Full disclosure, though, I play *way* more Barik and Nando than I do Inara so the only perspective I have is playing against her and healing for her vs Barik and Nando.

Idk If Azaan is better point tank than Ash and Terminus. You can play Ash with the shield talent and the card for increase the coldown when you hit someone with the knock back, that makes her be a sheild spammer while doing a decent dmg and being abble to ult the healer or the damage in a point fight for win the round. Talking about term he has the talent for dmg reduction if you plus this to heaven and the loadout for dmg reduction and speed with the stacks of his shield term become a really monster of dr and being abble to counter cautherize with the shield. These are my thoughts like on your video so I only wanted to share with everyobody

I run term with it follows 5 and strength of stone 5 and it is the most hilarious thing, imagine a term running dmg resist 3 with additional 20 percent plus addition 20 percent when below 50 zooming at you with mobility 3 and an additional 40 percent speed 😂 it’s honestly the most fun term build I’ve ever created

I'm going with atlas. I won multiple games against 2 frontlines as him. He has so much utility. Just learn how to use unstable pressure. It's still good. I was getting quads with his rewind when it blew up after a certain amount of time. God I miss it

Not gonna lie, it bothers me a bit that you didn’t mention at all that his stun is extremely inconsistent. Been an issue since his launch that I’ve died to quite a bit on both ends of.

started playing this game last year and played barik my first 2 matches not knowing anything really other than some overwatch experience in the game style, didnt die either match and have stuck to this game since

Fun fact: Makoa can have his shield be at a 2.8 sec CD! Have barrier reef at 5 and carapace at 3 and you can reach peak CD with shield. Buying guardian 3 will have the shield be at 5704hp, which is 7 secs cd reduction when destroyed. Combined with chronos 3 and BOOM 2.8 secs!

Most annoying/hard to deal with. Obviously against counters they can be dealt with but if anyone plays these guys well its gonna be a rough match. All of them have great survivability and duel potential. That to me is what makes a tank good. Many other tanks have easy counters or you can just buy an item for counters. For example Barik, has 2 item counters and raum hard counter. I don't know who needs help understanding how to stop barik but there you have it. 1. Terminus 2. Nando 3. Raum 4. Makoa 5. Azaan Honorable mentioned. Yagaroth

I'm of the opinion Inara should be switched with Fernando. Fernando is entirely shut down by wrecker. His only real real value against a good team comes from his ult. Inara is shut down just as much by bulldozer but she has value to make up for it with the high nearly constantly up damage reduction and a good ult of her own. The mobility difference is worth noting but that is why off tanks are needed in the first place - to push in so the point tank can cap.

Tanks are classiefied into 2 subclasses: point tank and offtank. Point tanks (like this champs in this video) just sit on objective and have the best survivability in the tank class. While offtanks are more on the aggressive side instead of survivability (like khan) and are much better in making space for their team and zoning. Finally all tanks can be point or off if played well but some are just naturally better which in this video andrew talks about his opinion.

@@abdulmajeedhallak1688 I can safely say I hardly ever see an aggressive khan. I would think with his cards that allow better healing with shield up and his talent that makes his shield better that he would’ve been a point tank. The storm of bullets talent is the only one that seems off tank

@@1999worldjacob then you didn't play ranked. And yes khan's best offtank build is storm of bullets which increases his dps and even his kit is built to be more offtanking. Khan cannot attack while he is using his sheild unlike other point tanks which is an extreme disadvantage for applying point pressure without dying. Khan is imo the best off tank right now

Azan is not a point tank, he's an off tank that can stand on point if necessary, but he can't sustain dmg on point for a long period of time like other point tanks. Should've chose Terminus or Ash.

Great vid as always. If I had to change something, I would ditch Nando completely, bump up the tanks below by one and put Ash at number five. IMhO, Nando gets shut down if anyone buys wrecker. His shield melt, making him questionable at best as a point tank.

Thats why you invest in haven, rejuvenate and have indomitable at 5. You can't die if you flick your shield on and off. Most people build into his shield but it's better to build into himself and manage your shield to bully/annoy.

I do think you're using the shield wrong if you think Wrecker completely shuts Nando down. It depends on how much attention you get from your support, naturally, but you get the most value out of Nando's kit if you balance your HP damage and shield damage, put out some DPS with the flamethrower, shield to break caut, DPS more with your flamethrower, continue until team win or you die. Hard shielding is just asking to get melted by wrecker, but even if it is... everybody who bought wrecker 3 now has 1800 gold less they can spend on items that prevent your team from killing them. Edit: To be clear, wrecker really does make life hard for Nando, it's why he's considered to fall off late game (... on top of highlighting the problem with making Caut universal rather than an item), but he's far from unplayable.

There is only 4 main tanks. Fernando, Barik, Inara and Terminus. The 5th rank is arguable but those 4 are set.

I would argue that Terminus is rough there because unlike other point tanks he can't really fight back and defend the point at the same time. He absolutely relies on not being rooted to the point, way more than the other tanks which can be a problem when you can have enemies who will gladly put bullets in you from places you can't reach with your axe.

Is there a specific reason I see EVERYONE running carapace at rank 4? Never 3 or 5 its ALWAYS 4. Has someone done the math and figured out the last point in the card isnt worth it or is there some kind of creepy voodoo curse placed on the 5th and final point of the card where if you max it out you die instantly in real life? I just dont get it.

Yagorath is the biggest failure of a point tank if that's the case. She's clearly an off tank, she just has a talent for sitting on point if she wants to throw.

@@elmercy4968 Just because a character has a few abilities that help in a role doesn't mean the overall kit is good for that role. Speed King has some of the best mobility in the game. But should he play as a flank? Often, I would argue no. He should play as an area control unit. Likewise, Yag has self healing and % damage reduction when sitting still. But can she on tank, not really. What matters isn't the surface of the kit nearly as much as how the kit functions in each role. The dmg resist in her stationary form, and her movement in her mobile form, make her a monster to deal with when you are fighting her alone. But her short range, inability to remove cauterize from herself, and how easy she is to target, are enough downsides that whe is simply outperformed by other tanks on point.

@@noahabel5698 Mobility is far more unspecific than a talent that gives self-heal on point. The first is useless except for point tanks while mobility is useful for every class. That Drogoz has excellent mobility doesn't mean he is designed as flank.

Here's my guestimate before I watch: 5. Ash 4. Terminus 3. Inara 2. Fernando 1. Barik Edit: How is Terminus lower than Azaan and Makoa when he is technically a point tank and they aren't? I understand the point tank Makoa shield set up being better than Ash's though. But Term is 1 of the 3 ACTUAL point tanks in the game (4 if Nando is included). Idk how he doesn't make the Top 5 with his how his DR, speed, melee, and Siphon all mesh so well together to sit on cap. I am on console (where he has a 59% winrate) so my judgement could be skewed, but I have played a decent Term into PC players as well. As long as you flick siphon on and off, you can eat miscellaneous point spam to get the charges you need to point tank.

I'm controller as well, makoa shield is definitely better than term on point and Azaan and term depends on the map. I believe the ash shield spam is underrated, you can theoretically have an infinite shield for ash just with animations for the abilities in between with kinetic burst cd for shield.

I disagree with 4th and 5th place. Makoa is a bad main tank imo. His only way to survive is the shield, and if the other team don't shoot it as much, the cooldown is quite big, thus Makoa is just a sitting duck on point, specially with some hitscan on the other team. Then, Azaan is a good point tnak if needed, better than Makoa definitely, but he's worse than Terminus with Undying, whom is the hardest main tank in the game and is preferred on close maps so he'd be my number 4. My number 5 is close between Azaan and Ash. Ash with shield reset is quite good, better than Makoa for sure. Instead of depending on the other team shooting the shield, Ash can just wait for the shield to end and then hit the kinetic burst to have her shield up again. This gives some nice survivability, with some added quirks like a high life rip, good tools to keep people off point and a decent dps, so it's a close call with Azaan for this spot. Good video anyways

Barik can do CRAZY damage between headshots and his turrets. In ranked, I did a little over 300k with him in a 29 minute game. It was nuts. Our Vivian did 350k that match. (This is on controller)

i cant wrap my head arround barik being agood point tank tbh. most of the time i can easily beat a barik even with point tank yagorath. also im suprisedhow term didnt make it in considering how strong he is, i feel like he should have replaced azaan or makoa

Barik has such ridiculous cooldowns he usually can out shield (and by extension outlast) any tank on the point. His mobility and consistent damage make him a monster to deal with too. 40% cooldowns on kills/elims + 25% cooldowns on turrets being destroyed allows him to pop up his shield every 2-5 seconds if the team has literally any AOE, if you use Fortify. Also lets him spam rocket boots. The regular for me as a Barik is shielding numbers in the 200ks, a positive kdr, and more dmg then some flanks or dmgs. I'd rate him as #1 too personally.

I love how you answered your own question when you posted it. Yagorath is *really* hard for shield-dependent tanks like Barik because Yag just ignores shields. If Barik can't rely on his shield to absorb damage or break caut then his lower HP pool *really hurts*. The trouble with Yag is that it's not the Barik that kills you, it's the massive damage you take from the Barik's team.

@@Communist-k1n honestly ive found a suprising amount of success as point tank raum and yago. it can get rough when the enemy as CC, but more or less the strategy is to try to out-sustain the enemy tank since you have higher health than them in the fight, and if you need healing you simply find some cover to get healed up and then come back at full force. their greater damage and sustain can sometimes out do traidional point tanks in battle, and their mobility can make itso they can peel for their healers effectively and leave the enemy on a 5v4 at the cost of giving up point presence for a bit. the biggest counter is when theres a lot of CC that prevents you from leaving the point. these are things you learn from playing casual and picking off tanks is how to make them work as point tanks since you'll be forced to anyways because the casual meta is 1Tank 1 support and 3 DPS

Also rip +30% attack speed talent and rocket boots speed card. Those two were the best thing that ever happened to Barik imo. At least the attack speed talent felt much better than projectile one, I wish they removed it instead.

Term is an offtank not point. If you think he is a point tank you never played high rank game where no one shoot his siphone so he is nearly completely useless
