Espadrilles are king of summer while wearing casual clothes only during the day period Been wearing some since I was a teenager Over dressing them is not the way and your feet are going to have a crush for them just give them a chance and remember day and casual only

I bought a pair of espadrilles a month ago, and they've really grown on me. They breathe better than the sandals they replaced. They're (slightly) dressier than the sandals. They're less expensive then the sandals. They're more comfortable then the sandals.... TLDR: they're comfortable and practical in hot, humid climates, so they're now my go-to shoe when wearing shorts.

It' s very cherming tô wear them with linen shirts, shorts and also being elegant!!!!! It' s just a matter of leaving the confort zone and wear them. Prejudice should be put apart, That's all

Great video John. My opinion on the espadrilles is that some guys can pull them off. For myself being a short guy if smaller stature, I think they would look more feminine on smaller feet. They don't appear to very durable and I'm just think guys should wear footwear that looks a bit more substantial. If you do try them out, I would suggest avoiding the brighter colors or pastel shades and stick to the tans, greys, blues and earthy colors. And try to find an espadrille that doesn't appear unisexed. I do like the boat shoes. Nice that they are still around and gaining in popularity.

Great video John!!! As usual !! Just want to add something about espadrilles.. in Europe they are known as “alpargatas”and they are common and fancy combined with linen clothes or bermudas… just need to walk around Ibiza, Mallorca, Barcelona etc and give it a try personally I prefer laced espadrilles because they look less feminine.. In Spain we also have another “summer classic” named “menorquinas” or “avarcas” a totally “Ibicenco style” originated about 200AC in Menorca Island.

In my opinion the only difference between the espadrille and the slip-on sneaker is the sole. They both have the same profile and laid back and casual vibe. When I made the decision to smarten up my appearance in my mid 30's and ditching sneakers as apart of my everyday wear was a key factor in that change (I am just fed up with them now). After buying Brown brogue boots and black Oxfords the next pair of shoes were a pair of brown and blue boat shoes for the warmer climate, which have been my summer casual goto shoes for the best part of 5+ years, this summer, due to them looking a bit grotty now, I have replaced them with a pair of dark blue suede driving mocs and they are defo taking a bit of time to get used to, especially when wearing shorts as they look quite narrow on foot which is further exaggerated whilst wearing shorts, but I feel they look great with a pair of light jeans or Chinos. Truth be told, I only really wear shorts when it's blazing hot... Being from London, that's about a week in the year. I agree that Boat shoes are coming back into fashion with the younger demographic, with the preppy fashion that is going around.

Espadrilles are an essential in Europe, but don't buy cheap ones. The soles can be slippy on cheap versions, so make sure to buy ones with grip. Easy to slip on and off, light and light to pack

Hi John. I had a pair of boat shoes back in the 80's and I remember putting a running shoe insole in them because they had no arch support whatsoever. After that they were fine and I wore them till I wore them out.I now mostly rock driving mocs and loafers. I would suggest avoiding the ones with the nubby soles because they wear down faster especially if you wear them a lot ( personal experience talking here ) . You're also spot on about those hybrid boat shoes. Kinda weird. Peace. : )

Espadrilles are more European or beachy than preppy. So keep that in mind when putting that look together. I don't mind them if you're going casual in a warm climate. They just seem better suited than some loafers, mocs, or boat shoes in some instances. I guess if your were into wearing Toms then you'd be more comfortable transitioning to an Espadrille. When I see them though, I think super casual. It's more stylish than say a Sanuk or Toms shoe and a step up from a slip-on canvas sneaker.

I might be too old to pull off the Python Green Venetian Loafers but love the look of them. Have to agree with DM about the Espandrilles... they look like house slippers. BTW...Love the channel. Thanks for keeping it real.

Thanks, John. Not so sure about the Espadrilles either. Love my suede driving Mocs, however I wore them one day into my podiatrist’s office. She said they were horrible shoes to wear because there is little support. And that flexibility that you mentioned snd that I like is why she said they are terrible. That being said, not giving them up. Snd I own several pair of boat shoes snd love them.

However, if you want to step out of your comfort zone give them a try. My go to shoes in the summer are the clean white sneaker, the boat shoe, and the driving moc. I've also been starting to wear loafers a little more during the summer for dressier occasions. All worn either with no show socks, or sockless which is my preferred choice.

The boat shoe or, Top Sider should be a staple for casual shoes. I have been wearing them literally for over 55 years. I also have a few pairs of John Lobb boat shoes. A little dressier and about $1,500 a pair. Salvatore Ferragamo drivers. Classic also. Another must have the Gucci 1953 Horsebit loafer. In brown or black. Timeless and good taste. Good video as always. Never wear socks when it's warm. Vintage Lilly Pulitzer great also. Classic never goes out of style.

Great video John. Agree on the boat shoes. I wear them on occasion but it’s not my first choice. As for espadrilles, I don’t see Europeans wear them except for the beach. I do like the leather slip sneakers. Elevates a pair of chinos if done right.

I've got a cheap pair of Espridrilles for when it's very warm (not often) in black. I think I prefer them to sandels but they're not worth spending much on in my humble opinion. I prefer boat shoes to smart trainers.

Espadrilles are a great choice. These are way better than a boat shoe for casual summer wear. Boat shoes are great, I have a pair, but they look too "older guy predictable" for when you want a relaxed summer look in a slip on shoe. Picture Cary Grant in the early scenes from To Catch A Thief.

Thanks for the video John. I have been wearing the boat shoes since the eighties because as I put them on they ere an instant sensation. I have kind of gotten away from them over the past few years but they will go with just about anything! I appreciate, as usual, all the great ideas. John, you may disagree with me on what my choices of summer footwear: All white Air Max by Nikes. When it comes to boat shoes, I went with Skechers brand boat shoes. More comfortable than a typical Sperry boat shoes.

Yes to classic boat shoes! They’ve been a go-to for me forever. No to espadrille. Didn’t really like the sponsored shoes. I also wear a lace up canvas shoe that comes in a variety of colors - Sperry makes a great version.

Espadrills work with shorts and a sweater or tshirt. In other words, only super casual.

I love espadrilles. They lean slightly feminine I don’t disagree. But they are so damn comfortable for me because of how breathable they are. You really don’t feel them. Kind of feels like you’re wearing sandals or something. But they can be dressed up to wear with outfits you wouldn’t wear with sandals.

I want to address two shoes, the espadrilles and the driving shoe. I don’t own a pair of either. I would probably buy espadrilles before I would buy drivers. I have seen several comments saying the espadrilles are feminine. I just want to say that two different actors playing James Bond have worn espadrilles, Sean Connery in Thunderball and Roger Moore in For Your Eyes Only. I wouldn’t call James Bond feminine. I would never buy drivers. I am a former race car driver and of course I had special shoes to wear driving the race car. They were made of leather and nomex. The nomex was for fire resistance. They had a smooth sole with no heel. You do not need a special shoe for driving an automobile on public roads. The rubber nubs on the sole of these shoes will wear down quickly and they can not be resoled. When they wear down, throw them away. They are thin and on rough surfaces it may hurt your feet. Personally, I think they are ugly and it is a ridiculous design and serves no real purpose.

Espadirills are OK if you are not doing a lot of walking

Back in the 1980's I bought a pair of espadrilles when I was on vacation in France. I thought they would make me look European or maybe like Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice. Instead they just looked dumb, it's a hard pass from me. I'm good with all the other options though... and already own versions of each 👍

No espadrilles. For me, I would say a classic summer foundation still works best: a clean pair of low profile, minimalist sneakers; a pair of comfortable, classic boat shoes; a good quality pair of traditional penny loafers (they look good with or without socks), and a nice pair of leather flip-flops or sandals. Oh, and just to be clear, no espadrilles.

Espadrilles for the beach, Driving shoes for driving. Soft loafer's for smart casual, those hard loafer's don't look right with shorts imo. Plain slim trainers or deck shoes for casual and leather, i know, flip flops. Also worn in desert boots can look good for all round look.
