I love Opeth's 'Watershed'. I had to tap out after 'Heritage' though as they were moving more into the proggy/folky side of things, that lost me. However, in 2010 they released one of my favorite live albums ever in 'In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall'. Live is where Opeth excel to me and this is great(get the CD/DVD set).

Gojira is one of the two main bands that brought me into liking more extreme metal. At that time I was listening to stuff like a lot of alternative rock, a few heavy metal songs, a bit of power metal and quite a lot of metalcore. Then I accidently stumbled across the song The Art Of Dying. Never heard something that brutal, that beautiful and that amazing before. I listened to a lot more of them and I loved everything.

I actually think L' Enfant and Magma are the worst albums they've made. They're not bad but they're not as interesting as The Link, From Mars and The Art of Dying. I think The Art of Dying is a bit boring and repetitive but the song writing is much better than their last two albums which I think are much more boring and repetitive.

Well I was too late for the list, but nice to see 2 of my faves made it in :) Here's my listing . . . 1. Opeth - Watershed 2. Meshuggah - Obzen 3. Ihsahn - angL 4. To-Mera - Delusions 5. Ayreon - 01011001 Cynic - Traced in Air (came very close in the Top 5) Haken - Enter the Fifth Dimension Týr - Land Dynahead - Antigen Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe Sculptured - Embodiment: Collapsing Under the Weight of God Suspyre - When Time Fades Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase Warrel Dane - Praises to the War Machine (Rest in Peace) Riverside - Reality Dream Presto Ballet - The Lost art of Time Travel Enslaved - Vertebrae Darkane - Demonic Art Cloudscape - Global Drama Votum - Time must have a stop Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls Amaseffer - Exodus: Slaves for Life Vangough - Manikin Parade Canvas Solaris - The Atomized Dream Dominici - O3 A Trilogy - Part 3 Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy Pyramaze - Immortal Soulfly - Conquer Zero Hour - Dark Deceiver In Mourning - Shrouded Divine Eluveitie - Slania Abysmal Dawn - Programmed to Consume Revocation - Empire of the Obscene Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King Psycroptic - Ob(Servant) Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds The Faceless - Planetary Duality Hate Eternal - Fury & Flames Gojira - The Way of all Flesh Jorn Lande - Lonely are the Brave Cloudkicker - The Discovery Andromeda - The Immunity Zone Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God My Dying Bride - Ode to Woe Elvenking - Two Tragedy Poets (...and a Caravan of Weird Figures) Brainstorm - Downburst Iced Earth - The Crucible of Man Battlelore - The Last Alliance Testament - Formation of Damnation Harmony - Chapter II: Aftermath Theocracy - Mirror of Souls Animations - VII: The Last Man Agalloch - The White Ep Venturia - Hybrid Jon Oliva's Pain - Global Warming Judas Priest - Nostradamus The Haunted - Versus Sabaton - The Art of War Lots of obscure bands from Metal/Prog Metal I hope people checkout - and you too Brad (been a Metal fan since 1979 - Prog Rocker since 1977) \m/. I agree about Meshuggah in the earlier days, I too like the Thrash meets Groove/Complex meets Progressive, that's what got me into them with "Destroy Erase Improve" in 1995, most of it may have been in 4/4 but its what they did WITHIN the 4/4 that made them think on another level. Again, Opeth make Death Metal (meets Prog Rock) "Gorgeous". Mikael has a great powerful guttural voice along with his baritone melodic vocals. I find it a bit hilarious that people look at Opeth and Meshuggah as mainstream or boring now, oh well, they are not for everyone (and just when I thought I might be an elitist snob too).

Yup, but there are always LOTS of Metal albums each year ;). TONS that didn't make it to my ears (then and now) for whatever reason. I'm sure I've forgotten a few as well. That happens with any listing of mine from the late 70's to now :P. Thanks for replying, my comments usually get buried within everyone else's. It's hard to make a list too, as I used to burn CD compilations from my collection, now I make KZfaq Playlists and often with a "Theme". It lets me sample more bands that I find on Yt, and eventually I buy their CD's.

I think this list marks what I always felt happened in 08 2008 was the year The Progressive Realm truly exploded Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth and others exploded into the mainstream after years of moderate Success and acclaim throughout the late 90’s and early 00’s off bulletproof back catalogues It was this combined with the upsurge of under ground shit around the 07-10 mark like periphery and AAL and also I could already tell people were getting sick of straight Core genres and adding the technical or progressive edge is what made the scene so vibrant again This whole decade of Prog mania we’ve just had was all thanks to how much shit broke out at the end of the 00’s

I guess Brad drew the long straw opposed to the 1998 year in metal review or 2008 was just a better year? For me I remember '98 quite a bit more vividly and there were a lot of better choices.

Not necessarily one of my favourites, just of the years ending in "8" one of the most appropriate for me, given that I was able to listen to a lot of stuff that came out that year thanks to where I was at in life.
