The “sizing you up” thing is especially ridiculous given that my kingsnake made good attempts to eat me, an adult human, when he was like, 45 grams. If a snake decides it wants to try to eat you, it is not going to bother measuring first.

Yep, the only time I've seen anything close to this is when my ball will start face rubbing the rat and wandering around its enclosure after "killing" it.

The soaking police scared the hell out of me as a new ball python owner! The week after I got my bp his scales were looking kind of strange. I have since learned this is his pre-shed routine, but at the time I hadn't experienced a shed before. I wasn't sure if maybe it was stuck shed, so I followed Snake Discovery's bath guide to give him a quick soak. Afterwards he was making a wheezing noise, so I googled to try and figure out what it was, and only came across dozens of angry soak police posts. "Why would you EVER soak your snake? What kind of horrible person are you?!" I was so terrified I'd hurt my snake less than a week after getting him! (And don't worry--the wheezing wasn't a respiratory infection, my BP is just dumb and stuck his whole head underwater during his bath. He had water in his nose lol). The polarized nature of this community is very frustrating sometimes. I think the weirdest snake myth I've ever heard is that snakes are "slimy," which is usually sited as the #1 reason people don't like them when I talk to folks. I don't understand where this myth came from to this day. Unless you picked the snake up out of a mud puddle, snakes aren't slimy!

The slimy thing may be when garder snakes musk. It's a fairly common snake and it does a strange thing when you mess with it in the wild.

My mom always told me that people thought snakes were slimy because of how shiny their scales are and I was also scared too that I didn’t know when I should soak it because once I watch videos like snake discovery WWR people like that out here “oh yeah give him a bath” and then I would go on the Internet and I see people saying you should never do it “you’re a horrible person gonna kill your snake” but eventually stopped listening because a bunch of snake myths were coming from those post and I was like wait a second I have held snakes I’ve seen how they act and watched their behavior that doesn’t make any sense most people are dumb on here

I heard it actually bc “your the slimy one”. Basically when a nervous person timidly strokes a snake the scales repel the sweat. The person always assumes it’s the snake tho. Probably bc (subconsciously) they think of snakes as a kind of danger worms, the Only other amimal with no limbs they know of.

One of the myths or misconceptions that drives me insane is that arid species can not have a drop of humidity in their enclosure or they will die. Like sorry to break it to you, but it actually rains in Australia. Also under ground can hold moisture and many arid species burrow to access humidity that most people don't provide because they think arid species means that water in their substrate is toxic to them. This was a great video, I loved all the snark in it, really made it humorous and entertaining.

Literally heard that last one (again) this morning. I told him it's more likely that he'll die of a heart-attack and get eaten by his cat. I'm not even going to explain how ridiculous it is to suggest a snake will eat an adult human anymore.

The thing is, there is actually a couple of poisonous snake species, but they are generally considered exceptions. One of them is the tiger keelback, it steals the poison from toads and stores it in a pair of glands on the back of its head. We actually don't know how many snake species could be poisonous because not many people are just out here eating snakes lol. I highly doubt any of the people calling them poisonous know any of this though lol.

Would love to see a part 2! As far as the cohabbing myth, I wanted to chime in as a mourning gecko owner. Mourning geckos love being together, but that doesn't mean I can't just not examine their behavior and make sure they're getting along. The babies grow very quickly, and if I'm not paying attention, the oldest ones could end up bullying the younger ones and despite having many feeding spots within the enclosure, a brand new hatchling may not eat due to the stress from an older one. I have a cycling exoterra that sits empty for this reason, just in case the store I sell my babies through doesn't have any spots. I've never needed it, but I feel better knowing I can move older babies if I need to. If you are cohabbing anything, you should (almost) always have an extra empty space just in case an animal needs it. Just as Adam said, there is no always or never with these things.

@@Trapper1836 it's a mix of both my experience and understanding the behavior of communal geckos. Even though a species may be communal, it can still happen with individuals where they just don't get along, or if size is a factor it's easy for the smaller one to get bullied which is normal in nature. Just like with humans, where we don't always want to be sharing our space, communal geckos still each need their own spaces in the enclosure and if there are too many older babies, they will outcompete their brethren and chase them out of comfortable spots. I notice it every month and a half or so when I bring the eldest babies down to the store. Once a handful of the oldest babies have moved out, the youngest ones begin to thrive. In turn, more eggs hatch, and those youngest grow, and the cycle continues. Having an empty, cycling exoterra that is ready anytime I need it is a necessary precaution in case the store doesn't have any space to take babies that month.

@@Trapper1836 that's so kind of you 🥺 the store is absolutely incredible, with knowledgable staff who dedicate themselves to the animals while they are in their care. They're called Aquariums West, I've yet to have a negative experience with them. I love my mourning geckos so much and will go to any length to ensure they are thriving. Due to their size it's difficult to give them any sort of medical treatment if something happens. The best offense is a solid defense.

A lot of the time when people say “doesn’t bite” they are usually saying that this animal is not very inclined to bite not that it is literally incapable of biting

doesn't bite and can't bite are definitely very different things. if someone says theirs doesn't, or the species doesn't, i know they mean it's not very likely to. it's the can't bite that you have to look out for. hell people say their dog or cat doesn't bite. and i usually believe them, but i would never think their dog is incapable of biting

I've heard "the snake is straightening itself next to you at night to size you up" one quite a few times, and the persons who told the story were always telling it like it happened to their friend. 🙄 Clearly they're part of the people who think that a snake's stomach spans its full length.

I find the co habit point really particularly interesting because its just good advice in general to research that for any animal you plan to get! Like for example with mammals even just looking at rodents guinea pigs are so social that keeping one by itself will likely leave it so depressed it will die young. Sometimes guinea pigs even become visibly distraught after the death of a group member they are just that close to each other. Syrian hamsters on the other hand are so aggressively territorial mating is really the one and only time two adults should ever come in contact and you better separate them fast after that lest you risk one killing an cannibalizing the other. Hamsters are surprisingly hardcore for how cute they are lol.

I literally had to deal with #1 on this list a couple days ago! I'm a docent (volunteer educator) at a local (AZA accredited) zoo, and was talking to some of the new docents that had just started. We got to talking about snakes and a man of at least 60 told me with absolute certainty that snakes were dangerous because he heard a story where a women told her vet how sweet her big snake was when he laid on the bed with her and the vet said to get rid of the snake IMMEDIATELY because the snake was sizing her up to eat. I was honestly baffled. This man had just gone through an 8 week course of animal education to become a ZOO DOCENT and believed this nonsense completely. Of course I shut him down on that but even after I had explained how it was just a ridiculous myth I could tell he still didn't really believe me. I'm just hoping he stays away from the reptile house.

I have a children's python who is a bit over a metre big (about 3 and a half foot long). I have plenty of photos and videos of her trying to eat me. I'm almost twice her length and about 90x her weight. I use her as the perfect response to people saying that a snake will size you up before trying to eat you.

@@alyssafigliano3994 childrens can be nippy but tend to grow out of it. Mine decided that she's not like all them other snakes. She decided to become MORE nippy as time goes on. When I'm handling her, she's very trustworthy. Won't strike at all. But if a human isn't touching her, she'll bite. 100%. My other snake is a Stimmy (which was reclassified as Children's last year) and she's an absolute sweetheart. I'm instinctively scared of her when she looks like she's about to strike. I've come to accept I'm in an abusive relationship with my snake. Lol.

She actually seems to enjoy being handled to some extant, or at least interacting with me. Although one day I would like to have all the Antaresia species, and maybe breed them. Thank you so much for number 4. I have a rescue Northern blue tongue that is much smaller than it should be and the previous owner claims “reptiles only get to the size of their enclosure.” No sir, your lizard that you surrendered to me is incredibly small for a blue tongue because you only fed it boiled chicken every two weeks and it has very visible metabolic bone disease. Very frustrating that some people put in no effort to making sure their reptiles are kept correctly.

it reminds me so much of the myth about cats that goes like "a couple brought their newborn baby home & in the dark of night their house cat jumped into the crib & killed the baby because the cat was jealous!" i've done a lot of work with cat rescue & no joke we've had pregnant couples use that myth as the reason why they're surrendering their cat - absolutely ridiculous!

I was told by this kid who has never owned or even touched a snake that snakes can't get sick. Like they literally can't get sick and they just go through times of "depression" where the eat less or struggle to "peel". I hate people who think they know what their talking about when they absolutely don't.

Rex on Snake Discovery is the only well known case I can think of where an animal was noticeably stunted due(in part) to living in a too-small enclosure for most of her life. And I’m pretty sure (based on watching videos of her) that she’s grown some since they rescued her.

It should work the other way, if you want a big snake. Want a 15 ft garter snake? No problem, just put it in a large enough enclosure

I will say, years ago when I was much younger, I got a hermit crab from a store, and was actually told by the salesperson that if I didn’t provide another shell, the crab would stop growing and stay in that one shell (as in, a new, bigger shell wasn’t necessary). You could imagine my surprise when the exact opposite happened. Now I know that’s far from the truth, but for me at that time, who wasn’t experienced in keeping exotics, I believed it

Great video! The one about how cage size affecting an animal's growth is one of those really saddening myths that you even hear about from pet stores... You hear it especially regarding goldfish, a highly personable fish that lives for 20 years. They grow BIG but everyone seems to think you can just put them in a small tank their entire life. Well, that 'entire life' is typically like two years before they die, often due to neglect. And of course, if they die after two years they haven't had the chance to grow big yet. Thus the myth lives on. Also, because they die after such a short time, a lot of people think that is how old they can get... Goldfish are actually veery difficult fish to keep, if you want to have them live for as long as 20 years. They're highly sensitive and high demanding. I wish it was possible for people's perception of goldfish to change for the better.

There was a pretty pervasive myth that some snakes would sting you with their tail, like a scorpion. I personally think this was born of those snakes' tendency to wrap with it's tail, so it doesn't fall. Basically, if you are scared and ignorant of them, anything they do is viewed through an anthropomorphic lens of malicious intent. The only one I found to be true is one I've told before: If your carpet python escapes his enclosure and makes it's way to your bathroom shower curtain rod, he will strike at your roommate, when said roommate comes rushing in the next morning to take a shower. True story. My bad.

Hey great videos. I've started going back to the very first video you made and been watching them all in order. I have a suggestion for a future video if you're down for it. A video of all the pet friendly plants or at least the best plants for enclosures with pictures and for the different types of animals i.e. desert, tropical. I think it would make a great video. If you think trying to untangle a ball python from a chair is hard, try a 6' carpet python. My sweet dork of a snake seems to have a second brain at the base of his tail and just when you've freed his head, his tail has wrapped around a leg. Then you unwrap his tail only to find his head and neck have corkscrewed up the side of the chair. Honestly, sometimes it's easier to just put the chair in front of his enclosure and wait until he decides to go back himself.

Yes make a part 2, 3, 4 . . . . There are so many myths and misinformation about reptile husbandry that consistently gets perpetuated. It is frustrating. You say, "Do your research", which is so important, but sometimes even supposedly reliable sources perpetuate myths. thanks for the fun vid man.

I'll admit, Believed the python sizing up myth way longer then I should of. I'd heard it on an animal planet show while I was a kid. Can't even remember the show anymore, but I remembered that little nugget. Wasn't until I got into snake keeping and did more research on pythons in general that I realized it made no since. Just goes to show that no matter your source, always do your own research.

i'd love a video like this that focuses on snake myths specifically because there are SO many myths & misconceptions out there. it wasn't until i got my first pet snake that i realized just how wide-spread these ridiculous myths are. snakes are so misunderstood & all the negative misconceptions just make people more afraid of them, & in a lot of cases that fear leads to real harm being done to these animals. it's important to debunk the myths & show people just how amazing & important snakes are!

I have 2 Royal Pythons/Ball Pythons. 1 normal called Servine, 1 Pinstripe called Snivy . Looking after a friends snake cause he was getting evicted. But now he is quite safe. But decided to leave Ethel with us. She is a lovely dark Royal Python, then finally still at home Son left home left his 14 foot Reticulated Python here cause girl friend does not like snakes. I find them a lovely form of me neck massage!!! Also servine and snivy in their own way very affectionate.

You should do a kenyan sand boa care guide! I love my KSB and would enjoy your input on proper care. When getting him I saw alot of conflicting info on substrates and other aspects of care.

Great video. I personally don't have reptiles but I do have various inverts ie jumping spiders, tarantulas, isopods, mantids etc. I totally agree with your comments about people who should do their research; currently almost ever day there are posts about unexperienced owners feeding their jumping spiders flightless fruitflies and wondering why their spiders aren't doing well, no regard for the appropriate sized prey they should be giving. I did lots of research before I got my first jumping spider, tarantula etc, and I still research on a regular basis incase anything has possibly changed. Before each tarantula I research the species so I am as prepared as possible. It's so frustrating that others don't.

Alot of this myths bugged me even when I had no reptiles or fish. I always learn I got to have that in. Just those is it poisonous? Do you feed them bugs and egg? Don't they get huge?? It doesn't bite right? It's going to eat you want! I have to remind myself that some people don't know, but I can't with that some people ask "stupid" questions

You had me scared with the Fahlo contact first because there are SO MANY scams with those bracelets out there but Fahlo is the only one I have found so far which is actually named as being a legit collaborator by the conservation projects they are collaborating with. Something to note about dart frogs (I misunderstood what you were saying at first so worth clarifying): darts of the same species generally do well in pairs (1m 1f). Some can do decently in trios or even larger groups, depending on the species, and with plenty of room. But really really not recommended to mix species or even different locales of the same species.

"your snake is planning to eat you" boy, my biggest ball python cant even figure out how to eat appropriate sized F/T rats sometimes and went on a hunger strike when I changed her type of substrate (it is now switched back because shes a picky princess)

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard the #1 story or similar stories, and it’s like, first of all your snake isn’t going to eat you or even try to, and second, why would you let your giant snake free roam your house in the first place 😂

"They are from kind of arid parts of Australia" Yer, not really, bearded dragons live right here in Perth, West Australia and it rains here, sometimes a lot, so they get wet in the wild too. Caught a young wild one at work last year, to release it back into the national park next door (because bearded dragons and heavy machinery don't mix). The absolute funniest one I ran into happens to be from my ex wife, who had the Chinese cultural thing of being so terrified of snakes she would drop her iphone if someone posted a snake picture on facebook, I asked her why, and she said "because Adam and Eve".

I own and run a small pet store. I hear on a weekly basis if not daily that snakes are slimmy and grosse. Coming from people who want fish, which are kind of slimmy. This annoys me so much. Speaking of keeping fish, many believe that fish will only grow to the size of their tank. They get annoid with me when I explain that it isn't true.

It's difficult finding reputable sources for more of the beginner species. Trying to figure out specifics is a nightmare because nobody has an appropriate answer. Like, I want to know the recommended grams to feed my beardie. That way I can plan out the most effective meals for her, and how long the food I buy will last. All I ever see is "You should feed your bearded dragon 80% veggies!". I understand that, but how many veggies? What are there estimated Kcal expenditures? What veggies provide the best nutrition? The pet trade is frustrating when you want to do viable research for animals that are not dogs or cats.

Quick question, how long does it take for you everyday to take care of/feed your pets? I wanna get some more but I sometimes leave on holiday and I usually get someone to take care of my crest but don't want to get too many and it being complicated for their caretaker to feed them! If you find the time to reply to this, I would really appreciate it!
