My friends, today we have five strange mysteries and oddities from GoldenEye 007's strangest level, Silo. The stage is laid out so weirdly, had numerous unused assets, cut content, and all sorts of relics of a bygone era. Enjoy this nostalgic look at five weird mysteries, unsolved oddities, easter eggs, and other nostalgia inducing fun from one of my favourite stages in all of GoldenEye 007... Silo!
As always, feel free to comment and share your own memories, or gaming anlaysis and speedrun history about the stage. Do you know anything I didn't mention in this video?

The RDP unit of the N64 is the "Reality Display Processor". It's pretty much a discrete GPU that handles frame buffering, depth testing, and rasterising to take those tasks off the CPU. That generation of consoles were largely the earliest ones to feature hardware acceleration for 3D graphics.

I would guess a lot of the weirdness with Silo in particular is because it was a survivor of the rail shooter beta footage that exists out there. Silo was clearly one of the earliest levels that was finished enough to have a demo to show to the press, so it's not a surprise there's a lot leftover from the game's rail shooter life. Those missiles firing off would've been a helluva setpiece to rival the most badass Time Crisis moments for sure.

It does make me wish every game had a feature similar to Valve's developer commentary mode, when you walk through the game in real time and learn about hidden dev intentions. That'd be cool if we could retroactively implement that in every old game. (as a sidenote I wish so called remasters of old games would put effort into features like that instead of ruining art styles or the stability of the game) I guess that's what video developer commentaries are made for though.

A lot of the unused properties of Silo: the vents, the rocket launch, the ability to open and close the launch door, remind me of the end of Aztec. I wonder if they decided the two levels were becoming too similar and stopped developing those features in Silo, or whilst making Silo, became inspired to create Aztec. In regards to Ourumov's briefcase, they might have added it before realising that the player would have to kill Ourumov to obtain it, but Ourumov can't die in Silo because he is needed in Train, and by that point it was just easier to leave the briefcase and key in than go back and remove them.

Regarding the blast doors that open in the roof when the player becomes unarmed, I'm 99% sure I read somewhere that this was added by the Devs so they could record some cool footage of the blast doors opening with the missiles clearly visible in the foreground. I discovered something recently that I never knew about Aztec. I knew about the wall climb technique in the pit at the beginning of the level so I had an idea. After clearing out all the enemies, I wanted to run back into the pit and lure Jaws back to that wall so I could do the wall climb technique and shoot him from above. To my surprise, not only can Jaws shoot you through that wall from the bottom of the pit, but he can do the wall climb as well and that totally destroyed my idea. Hahahahaha I had hopes that it would work but it’s still pretty awesome learning something new after 25 years.

I have a theory based on nothing that silo was one of the first, if not the first level that they made. It seems like it would fit the on rails style they were originally going for. Guards hiding behind boxes, stuff like that, classic arcade style level. Maybe these weird assets were from when it was still an on rails shooter. Also does anyone else remember ever seeing a video, or image, or something of Silo having like a mini boss, in like a different room? The model of the guy was that black suited model (like the ones in Cradle) and had the face model of that character with the dark eyes. Not Duncan Botwood but the other one with dark eyes.

I doubt it's true, but a silly theory that I just thought of: Perhaps an early concept for the Silo mission was to infiltrate the Silo, obtain the briefcase and key, use the key to open the roof and then use the briefcase to reprogram and launch the missile, and finally escape before the missile launched, possibly with the ultimate idea being to use the missile to destroy their own silo here. And then during development, the objectives were reworked into the final version of Silo, with those earlier ideas being recycled into Aztec instead. Theory aside, the main thing that sticks out to me is that it's quite similar to Aztec though, with the opening roof paralleling the exhaust bay and the implication that the missile was meant to launch at some point. I have to wonder if there is some connection there at least.

I had messed around a lot on that stage but I don't think I've ever noticed the silo doors opening. I always figured that the hardware cards were for the GoldenEye. I didn't think it was an Easter Egg for the names of the Nintendo 64 hardware components. Technically. If there's a GoldenEye on that level. That would mean that there was a third one were as in the film it was indicated there were two? I can't remember if destroying it after taking the photo fails the objective though. But the silo does explode it on higher difficulties. I imagine the lowest difficulty is to help players learn the level. I'd like more videos like this. I find them fascinating.

This video intrigued me so much that I just had to go dig out the old N64 and see some of these things myself. Just like you, I went to silo and turned on my invisibility cheat (which took me a few tries to unlock I must admit). I was so interested in Ourumov’s briefcase so naturally that’s the very first thing I wanted to check out. I ran straight to the end of the level where I could find him. Just like you demonstrated, I was able to shoot the briefcase and sure enough he would just flinch and nothing else. But then I noticed something that you didn’t mention (maybe you noticed it and thought it was just TOO strange and unusual for this video)…. When Ourumov’s briefcase is shot, IF YOU ARE STANDING VERY CLOSE TO HIM, you can hear a very very feint and QUIET and DEEP voice sound from him. One that’s different than the usual sound of a guard taking damage for example. It sounds like he’s letting out a SIGH??? The sigh (to me) sounds as if he’s upset about something? Perhaps this was part of a scrapped mission by the developers… who really knows. (Hopefully I’m recalling this 100% accurately, I tested all of this 5 days ago) Anyways, sorry if you were choosing to keep this a secret for another video. It’s honestly just so strange and unusual so you’ll definitely want to check it out for yourself if you missed it. I mean.. I wouldn’t believe it myself if I was the one who missed it... If you do make the video, perhaps you could use one of these titles for it “SILO’S LOW SIGH” or “SIGH LOW on SILO” At the end of the day maybe my Goldeneye cartridge was just struck by a stray gamma ray and this was programmed in randomly. Hard to tell. A lot of crazy stuff happened that day, it was April 1st after all.

Very cool. Didn't know any of these things. About the sky textures, could they be used to slightly boost performance in 4P multiplayer?

This stage was originally programmed to be on rails like the Virtua Cop games....I think it is possibly the very first level they created

RDP: Reality Display Processor. The RCP is split into two parts, the RSP (Reality Signal Processor) and RDP; the RSP does all the vertex calculations, then the RDP does the texturing, blending, filtering, etc. to actually generate the display.

Another interesting tidbit about the Silo mission is that the room where you can open the bay door, there is a balcony and guard that you cannot get too through normal means. I wonder if there are game genie codes that allow you to explore that area more.

Does the sky physically change to mirror another level, or just in the code? You've talked about it at length over the years, but every time you show footage I only see the default blue sky in the missile room.

I actually did know about the room names. I recently dusted off my N64 after decades and started a new run in this game and was stuck on Silo 00 Agent for a while because I kept missing one of the silos when planting the bombs. So I started to keep track of each room I went in by remembering each of their names.

Wonder if the briefcase used to be in multiplayer as a capture the flag item type deal, and the vent looks like it used to be the original starting position for the beta or something then you'd go up the ladder. That's just my guess though. Reminds me of when I was a kid I wondered why the balcony doors on frigate were locked and couldn't be opened near the control room (not the one downstairs)

could be, the next Rare game, Perfect Dark, did have a mode called king of the hill where you had to hold onto a briefcase for longer then anyone else

6:23 I just tried this on 1964 emulator not too long ago and even though I couldn't open the ceiling, I discovered that both of those ceilings are transparent. You can shoot bullets, rockets, grenades etc and they go through the ceiling as if nothing is there. I threw a bunch of throwing knives to the point where the audio started to glitch out and decided to shoot rockets as well. This ended up crashing the game.

Another strange thing: the timeline in Silo does not make sense. It says that it happen 2 years before the main story and that it takes place in Soviet Kirghizstan. The main story is set in 1995, the year of the movie, however, that would put Silo in 1993, 2 years after the USSR ceased to exist. Therefore, it should've been set at least 4 years before the main story.

If you look in the 'mission background' it states that "Deep intelligence reports suggest that this operation may well be outside the control of the former soviet powers in the region" which suggests the silo was abandoned after the dissolution of the USSR and the Janus group (Trev/Ouromov) took it over.

Silo is so much fun, thanks for the video! Is it possible to have a plastique not attach to a surface and fail the mission? I swear I've seen it done, but I recently tried to do it, and couldn't.

The behavior of Ouromov with his briefcase strikes me as weird in LTK too. Ouromov normally drops the briefcase and runs as soon as he sees you. I assume this is because it’s tied to his health and he starts with zero health in LTK, but you don’t even have to shoot him once… I mean, it’s not like all the guards see you and just die in LTK, they have to be shot, even if shot in the gun. Not so with Ouromov and his briefcase.
