Orange, the most dangerous rank range IMHO. This is where your setups get good but is prone to developing bad habits. Was stuck around this and Red rank range for the longest time. At this point, it's best to start learning about your opponents rather than focusing on your own offense.

Red ranks is where players are where players are "decent." Orange ranks players are still working out the kinks in their games.

My problem in orange is frames, I know "top 15 punishes" for half the cast, but if you playing miguel, feng, Bob, you will get away with murder on me
@mitomidou

@Walter , @Guitar Dog , Once you get to orange to red, in my own experience, it's time to slow down a bit. Start eyeing matches as learning experiences rather than getting to the next rank. A very heavy request but, as per experience, once I stopped worrying about rank, that's when I started moving forward again. Learn which moves work and do not, what works where. Moreso, try to see if there are any basic principles that work for different characters. My main Miguel for example, if you have trouble with him, space him out, use keepout tools and the character has a horrible chance of winning. A general approach is sometimes more important than knowing exactly which moves to watch out for since, it is likely possible that you may fight a good party time style player and there are an exponential number's worth of players with different move preferences, not just the usual dominant strategy moves.

@@mitomidou I agree entirely, I play in console sobi dont need to spend money to make a 2nd account. I got my secondary up to genbu last week when I was drunk so just having fun. If you dont care about the rank you dont get worried and choke when you are at "promotion chance"

Somehow I made it to Puple Ranks (Revered Ruler) and yet I still have this bad habit of trying to attack after being blocked. This is a major tip though. You literally have to abide by this if you wanna get good. At this point, my problem is thinking the combo is over and it's not. Then I receive a counter hit.

Hey Peter, thanks for the feedback, I didn't even realise that was something I did frequently! Just goes to show how bad I've burnt in that autopilot, I'll try in the future to be a bit more aware of what my flowcharts are and to start using moves with an express purpose rather than as just mental breathing space. Watched all your "mistakes" videos and they're really good and highlight a lot of my bad habits/mistakes. One thing that's the hardest to improve for me is throw breaking. A good thing to note about in #3 is that some of those strings are natural on hit, I believe all of them are delay-able as well so you can fish for the first move to hit and hit confirm the entire string. Feel that as an Overlord King I know my own character pretty well and that my fundamentals are okay, it's the other characters that I need to start understanding better now. My list of "problem characters" is essentially "most of the cast". Or I know how to deal with, say, a green rank Steve but a more advanced purple rank is going to work me over because my depth of knowledge isn't good enough. I fought a Fujin rank Asuka not so long ago and I think the final score was 20:3. Mostly because beyond a few pieces of knowledge I just do not understand how to fight Asuka. From what I've seen fighting higher rank players, their fundamentals are better on average, but it's superior game-knowledge that puts them where they are.

Generally speaking there's not just knowledge that higher Tekken rank players have. Speaking from experience ranks higher than orange generally have better whiff punishing, spacing, pressure, and sidestepping.

@@PeterYMao Thanks for sharing your experience! And that's something I neglected to mention in my first post. Experience is a massive advantage a game like this. I've played Tekken 7 on and off for about a year now, never really played fighting games before I picked up Tekken (a bit of FighterZ and an old flash game series called Dragon Fist if I *really* scrape the barrel). My naivete is my biggest weakness and I can only imagine how many tricks I fall for that someone playing for years wouldn't.

I can agree with most of these tips but I think Steve’s b1, 2 can be good to throw out occasionally cause unlike all the rest of the strings Steve has tons of options like a flicker cancel or crouch cancel or his weird junkyard style string, and in my experience it can be kinda good to mix up with a duck forward after a flicker cancel. It might not be too powerful but it’s not like every other string where you can just flash duck when you see the first hit. People don’t really crouch after b1 cause of all of Steve’s options, but what do I know.
@robbr8932
@robbr8932 3 жыл бұрын
It’s kinda like hei df1,1 where it can’t interrupt a jab or be delayed, but if it hits you get some initiative and you still have some good options on block, but it’s not good to throw out all the time.
@PeterYMao
@PeterYMao 3 жыл бұрын
Steve's flicker cancel into anything can be flash ducked because the options out of b+1 are all highs or lows. Hence flash ducking can be a powerful option. Even if he flicker cancels into something like d/f+1 his fastest mid, you can duck and stand back up, or even dick jab to check him. Of course, then this creates another layer of mind game meta.

Never start bothering with frame but after get out from green I start learn to recognize opponent moves and 1,4 instinctively when block stuffs that should send me fly, then slowly working up 4,3 and df2,1 and finally Jet Upper their butt if -14 or more. Realizing I've been letting so many moves get away without launch punish makes me wanna learn more about each MU and frame data.

@PeterYMao Great video as always! I'm curious about this part at 15:29 and was wondering if you could explain a bit more since it's definitely something I think could help me for character match ups Is it a general rule that if the opposing character has better keep out than you that you should avoid using keep out and play more aggressive? I've always thought it better to force the opponent to play more aggressive as otherwise I feel like I'm letting them play their preferred playstyle otherwise. For example, if I'm up against Bryan using a character with less range/keep out options, I force him to be the aggressor and I play more defensively, since he doesn't have as good poking or as many options to get plus frames, and if I start playing too aggressive I'll open myself up
@PeterYMao
@PeterYMao 3 жыл бұрын
If you play a character with less range why would Bryan come to you? He would just play keep out and not let the character with less range in. There's no reason he needs to be going in, in that case. Also Jack is a monster when he gets momentum because of how good he is at poking, but he is bad at getting pressure off of him. That combined with his range is why you need to play more aggressively.
@danieldwiggins4225
@danieldwiggins4225 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeterYMao Yea that's a good point, I guess an experienced Bryan player wouldn't fall for that unless you have a life lead but I definitely find that a lot of people online grow impatient if they're playing keep out and you don't approach. They'll usually either get closer or the worse ones even start spamming their keep out options hoping you'll get caught even when you're out of range. Definitely makes sense that you shouldn't rely on them switching their playstyle though thanks! And yea I definitely see how characters like Jack that have both range and poking would require you to be more aggressive, that's really helpful

what is in common that we share the same name Peter lol. I am in the last four highest ranks. Actually I have stuck at Tekken King for months (I uploaded one promotion to Emperor video on my channel but only has 20 views lol) . At high level rank, these kind of mistakes are unforgivable. People not only know to punish u perfectly, they are also very quick to learn your game play and habits. IMHO, the best way to rank up in Orange is to focus on spacing and try to use safe moves. Learn not to push buttons and patiently wait for your turn. Don't gamble too much on 50/50 moves.

Huh...Back to replays for me...Gonna need to make sure im not doing some things...Cheers for the info!*tips hat* 5mistake learn matchups huh? I know matchups heavily depend on your character also but will you do a season 4 anti-"character" guide? Like for example Anti-Armor-king guide. Sidestep right. Armor king loves these moves. Also need to learn throw countering. All of it lighting fast. I dont see many people (myself included) having a very long attention span to know every move. Or people could just play the video as soon they see their new online opponent loading into the game and could get the info before the second round is over. Maybe at the end of the video it would turn into a video FOR Armor king that shows moves he should consider so people woudent side-step right (i think downforward 2 catches them). have a graph that what your gameplay should be as AK. 1 graph says poke and pictures of all the characters underneath it that Armor king should be poking against. 2.Graph says rushdown and pictures of all the characters you should be crazy aggressive against etc. Last graph could "special" that just means that nothing else works besides research. Hope the suggestion made some sense, wasent total trash and it could work somehow. It would be a ton of work but i would grateful for it.

@PeterYMao
@PeterYMao 3 жыл бұрын
1) Join one of the character discords and as questions 2) Make friends with someone who plays the character and ask them what their character's weaknesses are try to figure out how you can abuse it. Example, Jack, Bears, and Fahkumram have a hard time sidestepping. Because of this, they are usually more weak to pressure because sidestepping is generally not a good option for them. 3) Figure out what the player's weaknesses are and play to that player's weakness. Example, does your opponent have trouble throw breaking, then utilize more throws etc...

also what do I do if I have a problem(in literally every fighting game I have ever played) where I want to play literally every character. I started with Kazuya and thought he'd be my main forever, but after realizing I can win much more often with characters I have spent 2% of the time I spent on Kaz, I am discouraged from maining him. I really hate when I do this but I can't help but want to try legit every character. I know I will learn moves and match ups better but I'll undoubtedly be spreading myself too thin.
