For one, his level goes up super fast in that game, and his moves are devastating. It kills the fun for team building but I still gotta love the guy

Not surprised that Swampert is top of this list. Water/Ground is an amazing offensive and defensive type combination with only one weakness, and it's not super-common - while Water and Ground hit a wide variety of types neutrally or super-effectively - and Swampert's got the bulk and the power to make those attacks work.

@@Panos7Thyra Sure, but who besides 5 year olds and challenge runners actually does that? For a standard play through where you use several team members, water starters are usually the worst choice because every Pokémon game has good water types, and with the exception of Swampert, better water types. Feraligatr is the worst of the bunch because who doesn’t want to use an extremely strong free shiny Gyrados.

In the main adventure, Natures, EVs and IVs mean pretty much nothing. It's only in multiplayer that you need to start worrying about it. That's because most NPC trainers have 0 EVs on their Pokemon, and have piss poor AI. The one exception seems to BDSP's Elite 4 and Champion, and those games are not very well regarded.

Agreed. It’s my favourite of the Johto starters and I often give the same or similar move set in each play through: A STAB water type move until I get the HM for Waterfall Bite/Crunch Ice Fang The fourth move varies, from a second water type move to moves like Rock Smash, Headbutt, Thrash, Earthquake, or Superpower.

This is only true in HGSS. GSC Feraligatr, and especially GS Feraligatr actually has a really hard time. It has that old pokemon problem of "Great Attack stat, what are my physical moves, uh oh". GSC gen 2 is ran by Typhlosion, since it gets Thunderpunch, and is a fair contender for Earthquake. HGSS puts the two on more even footing. Feraligatr is probably better for a lot of the game, but gets completely and utterly outclassed by Gyarados, while Typhlosion is easily the best Fire type available before Kanto. Feraligatr for early game, Typhlosion for unique niche and later payoff.

The only reason I disagree with Blastoise over Venasaur is because Kanto has no shortage of Water types. You can easily find another Water type to replace that spot in your team, Vaporeon, Gyarados, Lapras, Tentacruel, Slowbro, Starmie…I could go on. Meanwhile, your only option for a solid grass type is Oddish/Bellsprrout (which are version exclusives) or Exeggcute. From a team building standpoint, Venasaur is just more attractive to me. I also don’t think Venasaur falls off as hard you might think in the late game. It’s still useful against the final gym and numerous mons in the E4 and champion team. You won’t be sweeping an entire e4 member with Venasaur, but it will come in handy in more fights than not.
@tadferd4340

Other than Gyarados, Gen1 water types are quite late. Blastoise is strong throughout the whole game. Venusaur lacks good damage moves and is quite vulnerable despite bulky stats. It's also very weak until getting Razorleaf. Executor is a better choice and it being late is less of an issue.

I don’t agree with Blastoise being better than Venusaur. On the offensive side, it is clearly better, but Venusaur’s typing is better in a kanto playthrough than Blastoise’s pure water type. Plus, Venusaur can use leech seed, sleep powder and toxic, moves that are very useful and help the other pokémon of our team, and last but not least, there are better water types than Blastoise (Starmie or Lapras, for example) but Venusaur is very probably the best grass type in kanto. Your arguments for Blastoise are valid, I gotta be honest, and in the end, it’s also a matter of opinion and if you prefer playing Blastoise, well, enjoy ! And other than that, this is a really good video !

In gen 1, Bulbasaur has a lot more going for it than just it's type match-ups. It also has access to sleep powder (where sleep is broken in gen 1) and both Growth and Swords Dance, 2 of the best set-up moves in the game. Also, there are far more good water types easily available in gen 1 than there are grass types. To be honest though, I don't think there's a bad choice of starter in gen 1. All 3 can easily carry you through the game.
@danielquinlan2457

Swords Dance is good if you teach is Body Slam, but there's basically no reason to teach Venusaur Growth. Venusaur's best move in Gen 1 is Razor Leaf, which has a 98% chance of landing a critical hit. Critical hits ignore all stat changes in Gen 1, so using Growth is basically a waste of a turn, unless you're running Mega Drain instead

Honorable mentions should've included Tepig/Emboar in Black/White. No starter has a positive MU on their first gym battle there but Tepig has the best one as it gets STAB Flame Charge and can steamroll once it gets a couple speed boosts on the leader's Lillipup After that, it beats Lenora, Burgh, has the best MU of the three vs Elesa, does fine vs Clay as it beats Excadrill and Krokorok, doesn't do too well vs Skyla but by then you can pair Flame Charge with Heat Crash or Rock Tomb and take down her fliers, then beats Brycen with ease and fares well vs Drayden's pure dragons. Furthermore, he has advantageous MUs vs Cheren's Liepard and Unfezant, Bianca's Stoutlant, N's Sandile, Scraggy, Boldore, Ferroseed, Joltik, Klink, Klinklang, Zoroark, Carracosta, Vanilluxe and even the legendary dragon if he has Earthquake. He also beats Grimsley' team by default as well as Ghetsis' Bouffalant, Hydreigon and Bisharp, and has a positive match up against most of Alder's team. You can easily clear the first half of BW with only Tepig which is a pretty tall order for Snivy and a fairly complex one for Oshawott, mainly because of how difficult Lenora Burgh and Elesa are for them.

The day i learned typhlosion can learn thunder punch. It was all over . My experience in pokemon gold was solid with that starter. Anyone with feraligatr felt confidence during link battles or when you ran into your rival , but that thunder punch humbled them quickly and any grass pokemon would easily burn🔥. Typhlosion should definetly be on this list.

Exactly and while you can't poison AND PUT a pokemon to sleep you CAN put them to sleep AND STILL drain their HP via Leech Seed/Mega Drain. The later games Bulbasaur is still useful via Sleep Powder Giga Drain Solar Beam And Sunny Day to use Soloar Beam without the 1 turn wait. Swampert is good and all but I still prefer Torchic as the best starter in the Ruby Sapphire Emerald games OR its DS remake.

Typhlosion in gen 2 is pretty broken in a playthrough. Just typhlosion with fire punch, and thunderpunch can carry you through so much. It also gets earthquake, and dynamic punch. If you pick cyndaquil it makes the already pretty easy game easier. I still pick chikorita though even though most say its one of, or the worst starter. I disagree heavily though. I have my own take on chikorita.

I think Blaziken got outplayed for gen 3 Blaziken has an amazing move set and can rip through the elite 4 by itself at lvl 74. The fact that Sky Uppercut that it learns literally 1 shots a lot of the other moms in the game. You don’t really have to worry about it’s type disadvantages as Blaziken has insane speed and can get off its moves before getting hit by its weaknesses. Just something to mention as I breezed through all three games with Blaziken leading the pack.

1. I'm very happy none of the black and white starters were even considered for top mentions. They're all abysmal, with only Samurott having some lasting usefulness, but getting clearly overshadowed by a captured Gyarados or Starmie midgame, depending on BW1/BW2. Emboar is clowned on by Sheer Force Darmanitan, and you can capture Darumaka on Route 4. Likewise Serperior gets clowned on Leavanny's better typing and movepool availability, and again you catch Sewaddle pretty early into the game. I understand Contrary Serperior is amazing for competitive, but your starter Snivy will never have Contrary, so a Grass type that can Leaf Blade, X-Scissor, Shadow Claw, Poison Jab is very nice by comparison to a Grass starter limited to normal and grass type attacks for most of the game. 2. Swampert is an excellent #1 pick. There are no complaints here. Ice/Ground/Water coverage with a Normal or Fighting type (ex: Brick Break) attack for the last slot is very useful. Nothing really outdoes Swampert at what it does when it's available. Gyarados is a strong water pokemon in every game it appears in, but given that it doesn't have the same easy access to ground-type moves (and lacking Ground STAB), and it doesn't hit as hard with Water or Ice type moves due to lower SpA, Swampert still just carries hard throughout the game with its wide movepool. 3. I'd disagree that Blastoise is even that good to be considered top 5. Blastoise is middling in all stats, and its 85 special is outdone by a freshly caught Tentacool right after you get the old rod in Dewford Town, which has 100 special. Yes. Tentacool (before it evolves to Tentacruel) outdamages Blastoise, assuming both are at the same level. Not to mention Tentacruel evolves at Level 30, which is sooner than Blastoise. It's also got access to Swords Dance + Double Edge, in addition to Wrap, and the obligatory Blizzard + Surf. Yes, Blastoise can use Dig early, and all that, but if we're just looking for a middle-of-the-road Pokemon that clears RB easily and solo, Nidoking does it better and can be in your party as soon as you get to Mt Moon and get your first Moon Stone. It also learns Surf, though it doesn't get the STAB and it's off a lower 75 special stat. Yes. These non-starter alternatives I list aren't starters and don't deserve to be in a top 5 overpowered starter list, but I find it hard to argue that starters can be "overpowered" if they get outdone by easily caught non-starters. It puts into question "Why use this starter if I can just catch and use the clearly better instead, less than an hour or two into the game?"

Never pick based on the first gym, the latter gyms are vastly harder while the first are easy. Torchic may be weak against the rock gym, but Combusken one shots them all. Treeko is good here, but suck for Wallace the ice leader, the psychic gym, the flying gym, the fire gym, Team Magma, the ice Elite four member and most of Steven's Pokémon. Mudkip is a good second, but Blaziken slays all of them bar the psychic gym which is the only real obstacle unless you grind a bit more.

Rillaboom is so underrated as a starter. I feel like no one else noticed the level 30 palpitoeds running around the wild area well before the first gym that Grookey can take out at level 10. Cinderace may be busted with stats and pyro ball but Rillaboom makes grinding so unintentionally easy. My team in shield had Rillaboom, Gyarados, and Arcanine before I even reached the first gym just by eating a couple palpitoeds and finding a fire stone.

GSC Cyndaquill is bottom 5 starter. Especially if you play with LV cap. 1. learn ember at level 12. Which might not sounds that bad until you realize the lvl cap for Falkner is 9. Which mean you're stuck with just tackle to beat Falkner. GOOD LUCK!!! 2. It's only stab option is ember until level 31 when it learn Flame wheel. 3. Quillava cannot learn punching move. Typhlosion is the one who learn the punching move. Which mean yes you stuck with ember until 31. 4. It evolve way to late. Unlike Feraligatr who evolve at 30 or Meganium who evolve at 32. He evolve at 36. Which mean the only time he will be able to bring out the punching move is against Claire who resist all of the punching move.

@@riqua27 I definitely was not using a level cap challenge when I played gold version. Seems kinda irrelevant to bring up tbh. Even if you wanna talk about a level cap challenege, I am certain the other starters wouldnt fair any better against falkner at lv9. The video focused on type matchups mostly and cyndaquil only has a bad matchup against Clair which all 3 of the starters also have bad matchups since dragon resists all 3 starters. In the elite four there are only 3 problematic pokemon out of 20 total and lance himself for typhlosion. But again, all 3 of the starters struggle against lance. Typhlosion is clearly king in gen 2.

@@TheWarlordShogun 1. Not really. There's a reason why speedruner and minimum battle run use totodile as their starter. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htVpi9melq6vnqM.html 2. Totodile actually fare better than Cyndaquill in every way. He stay neutral most of the game. Rage is just so OP it carry you half the game. Also Lance and Claire is not a problem for Feraligatr Cause he learn Ice punch. Not to mention in LV cap run Feraligatr is actually not having the same issue with Typhlosion cause he evolve at level 30. 3. Why I talk about LV cap? A lot of reason. You see if you playing Nuzlocke LV cap is usually the rule they implement. Outside of Nuzlocke LV cap is actually one of the method you use to judge Pokemon equaly. You see in Pokemon you can overlevel any Pokemon and beat the game. You've seen right that people beat the game using Weedle. Because of that LV cap is a way to equalize the Pokemon when it come to comparing Pokemon.

@@TheWarlordShogun the problem is that you are forgetting how good of a type ferraligatr is. it has access to earthquake and ice beam, which means, its 2 biggest problems, grass and electric goes from a disadvantage to a 50-50 at worst. it is also like blastoise in that its pretty much the only starter of its gen which can deal with its "weak match up" incredibly easy.

@@riqua27 In fact, it is a way to compare Pokémons and the Level Cap is always 100. You compare Pokémons at level 100, and not before. Now, if you want to compare a Pokémon at a certain point in the game, you must consider the in-game experience available until then, the available catchable Pokémon, the viability or not of team compositions or a solo run, and not arbitrary nuzlocke LV Cap that does not represent the official way of playing the games. That said, Todile is better Lol.
