Hi, I have a male eclectus parrot 🦜 Their diet is approx 70% sprouted seed and veg to 30% fruit. My boy Ripper does get pretty sticky at times, but enjoys a shower so it’s easy to deal with. Of course they are messy, as are all birds. They are also highly intelligent and very trainable as well as the ability to be fantastic talkers. They truly are a fantastic companion parrot, but I agree probably not for the first bird.

For beginners I totally understand this list. For anyone with parrot experience, it won’t be that bad. I went from a Green Cheek Conure to a Congo African Grey and our African Grey is honestly easier aside from requiring more toys & general stimulation. She’s never bitten anyone hard enough to break skin, and likes to just hang out most of the time. She’s holds a grudge, but is generally very sweet and loving, even to strangers. My conure on the other hand used to attack, constantly. He’d fly for peoples faces and literally rip / bite through skin for seemingly no reason. I’ve honestly had better luck with big birds for temperament than the smaller birds. Though cockatiels are angels in my experience.

I have a rescue red sided eclectus that spent a couple of years (before me) locked in a cage in a closet. I've had Pepper about 2 years now, and he's fully feathered again, stopped his toe tapping and is finally relaxed and happy. After I got him, it took him 2-3 weeks to stop biting me just for the hell of it. It took him about 18 months to actually enjoy being touched and cuddled. He's learned to speak a few more things than when he first arrived, but talking is definitely something that is on his terms. A lot of people don't understand that these birds do EVERYTHING on their own terms and at their own pace. Rescuing an eclectus (or any parrot) is one of the most rewarding things, but OMG does it require patience and persistence. My son rescued a 35 year old triton cockatoo. And i absolutely agree with you here. None of these are beginner birds or for the impatient, but they are amazing birds. But really, nothing beats the morning singing of a sweet little cockatiel. I will always have major love for those guys. I would recommend them every time.

Budgies are actually great talkers and are really smart, most people don’t realize this because they get them at pet stores as adults and they were never raised to be socialized with humans. It’s best to get them from a store or a breeder that specializes in birds when they’re about 6 weeks old because this is when they’re old enough to leave the nest but still young enough to bond with you. If you want your bird to talk, you should get a male. I’ve never successfully got a female budgie to talk but the bond will still be there if you just want a buddy. For best results, you should take your budgies out as much as possible. Only keep them in their cage when they sleep and when you go out, they learn to talk by being around you and the more social they are, the longer and happier their lives will be

I find African grey and Eclectus are good for beginners as they aren't as complicated as you think. Quiet, easygoing and intelligent. Eclectus's diet are the same as every other parrot. Fresh fruits and Veg daily. Caique are the one where beginners need to avoid, as they are hyperactive and plays very rough! They will break your skin if they don't get what they want!

Absolutely disagree. Africans require a ton of attention and stimulation. There are too many in foster care due to people not being able to handle them. Take it from the experts who have years of experience working with them.

@@68mwsully I’m actually considering an African grey. I know they need a lot of attention but that’d work in my case because I’m at home all day anyway, so plenty of time to spend with one. lol. Granted I’ve got some bird experience (grew up with birds and reptiles, granted my mother made the mistake of getting a COCKATOO as her first bird, man that thing was a screamer. I started small-budgies). This won’t happen for a couple of years though, we’re moving to another state in a few months and I don’t want to put a bird through that. Would rather be in our permanent home before bringing a bird home.

@@68mwsullyhis. Their comment is exactly WHY Greys go through so many homes & are in so many sanctuaries. Absolutely ridiculous. This is also why AGS end up plucking & having severe issues bc ppl like this think they are low maintenance. Edit: I have an African grey & he requires more than my budgies. There’s a reason we compare them to toddlers.
@thomasbangash5808
@thomasbangash5808 5 ай бұрын
@@68mwsully: the reason for them being over-represented in the shelters and sanctuaries is not really due to their high maintenance, per say … that is because way too many people go out and get the African Grey for the sole purpose of them “TALKING” without realizing that majority of them DONT.

To the people who don't know this, don't get a bird from a petstore! Yes its easier to just go to your local petsmart and get a budgie but most of these birds just really won't bond with you in the way you might want. I got 2 budgies from a petstore and I tried EVERYTHING to get them to at least tolerate me but even after 2 years they still don't want anything to do with me (idk if this is just my birds tho) oh and another thing about petstores, unlike breeders they just send you off with your bird and you can't ask questions about your bird when necessary. My advice is to go to a bird show/fair and look at many different types of birds, that way you can know that is the bird you truly want and will dedicate to be with that bird till the end. Bird shows are also good to find a good breeder in your area. In summary just go to a breeder ( this comment is for new bird owners who need to hear this )

My absolute dream bird is a Moluccan Cockatoo, but my husband works from home so it’s just out of the question. I live down the street from a woman with one and we became very close. When she would go out of town, I would watch him for her. He was so incredibly kind and cuddly and easy to read. I’m wondering if the Crimson bellied Conure would be a good bird for me. I have researched quite a bit pros and cons with them. A lot quieter than most Conures and a good family bird, but also form a strong bond with me. I’m a very clingy Bird mom. I love to cuddle and have my bird with me all the time. Even when traveling. What do you think???

I had/have three of the parrots on this list. My first parrot was a sulphur crested cockatoo, which I got as a kid. She was my beginner bird, & she was not hard to look after. I see cockatoos often mentioned in lists of parrots that are not ideal beginner birds, & yet, mine was the easiest of all my birds to look after. Noise was not an issue. She sometimes squawked in the evenings, but a cocky squawk is not shrill or abrasive like some other parrots. I presently have an Amazon & eclectus. The Amazon is not difficult to look after. Even though he’s loud, he’s not noisy. He likes spending time with me but is also happy to chill out on his own. I’d agree that eclectus are high maintenance. I wouldn’t recommend one as a first, second or third parrot. Diet is a big deal with mine. I can’t feed him pellets because they make him toe tap. Unlike the eclectus on this list, mine is noisy & wants the most attention. On the positive side, he’s got a sweet personality & has never bitten anyone or me (whereas the Amazon bites). My eclectus has a larger than life personality & loves showing off in front of people. But his excitable nature makes him noisy, & most of his noises are shrill & high pitched.

There is no beginner bird man. And never buy from a pet store. Find a bird rescue and visit a bunch of times. Dont buy a baby bird. There are plenty of birds that need homes. A bird is a lifetime commitment. They are expensive and chew. I have Amazon's. 3 of them. They are very chill . All birds are not the same. Let the bird pick you. This kid acts like he knows everything about every bird. He does not. Ive had birds 50 years. Get to know a bird before you bring it home. Theyre awesome creatures. If they pick one person in the family and bond with them then you have a life long friend.

Very fair statements. Big birds require more of everything…lol…time, attention, larger enclosures, they are louder, more destructive, need bigger toys and more clean up, varieties of stimulation, socialization and interaction. Oh and their beaks can do way more damage when they bite. Start with a cockatiel…or a budgie…see how you do.

Generally getting multiple birds I recommend against as birds will tend to flock together and turn mean against their owners. Also mixing species is generally advised against. However, it is doable as I got a mix of 5 different parrots of all different species in my flock and they all get along with me and each other for the most part. It's really down to the individual and you should be getting another parrot with the mindset you will spend additional time out of your day with the second parrot. Don't get one thinking they'll become friends. In my flock, some of them don't get along with each other but it's fine because in the end, they all would rather spend time with me.

I just saw a video of wild cockatoos tearing up milled wood on various buildings in Australia. This outdoor children's playhouse was completely decimated. F-ing amazing and gives pause to the thought of having one of those loose in the house. Definitely any of the bigger birds or more hyper birds you don't want to have unless you are willing to go into free flight training. Personally, I wouldn't have a bird without having it as a flying pet with recall training. Some cage time IS necessary, but get a fish tank before you get a bird that is mostly going to be in a cage.

I started out with 2 red factor son conures, I then jumped over to a congo african grey and then to a Moluccan cockatoo, then finally my current goffin cockatoo My Conures werent tamed so I tamed them myself by doing excercises and seeing what a bird likes and prefers and got rid of its hand fear, over time they did learn but no to the extent i hoped so I exchanged for a african grey. They are intelligent, id like to let people know that in their absence their african grey will start throwing things down from tables and other places as an entertainment which could cause a little damage. When i moved to the cockatoo it was a whole new world, They are literally gentle giants, so playful and cuddly and loving, they need proper time and care but are the most loving birds out there. Sadly when i got my cockatoo he was already very old and soon passed due to old age. I currently own a goffin cockatoo, he is super loving and affectionate and spends alot of time with me ive been with him 2 years now and i couldnt ask for a better parrot :))

The owner of the bird store I go to won't sell mini macaws because she says they're more aggressive. She said the bigger the macaw the less likely they are to bite.
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
I've also heard the opposite as well as people who say that. My personal experience has been they're great. I think it might depend on the breeder pair they used. It's why I hugely advocate interacting with a parrot FIRST before buying because there's something to be said about gambling the genetic lottery for a nice one as well as sometimes the bird chooses you, not the other way around.

Could be that mini macaws aren't worth anywhere near the big ones hence maybe not worth breeding for that particular store.

Haha, I mentioned the Parrotlet on your Top 5 best, but they still aren't easy and even though very trusting, they are fickle and territorial and can be loud as well, but on the other hand even though not playful as such, they do like to be with you and can be clowns but all on their terms, as they are a big parrot in a tiny body! 😅

I agree with most of them but eclectus if you have the will power and the love for the bird and can take care of it I wouldn’t say it should be your first bird still I’d say get a smaller bird first I adopted 5 budgies and I’m adopting a eclectus this Friday

My amazon parrot is always chilling. He can happily stare through the window like a romantic school boy. Likes to talk in the morning and the afternoon and doesn't care about any spotlight. I agree with being bossy, though. Everything has to be according to his rules and hates being petted by anyone but me. Would be awesome to have an amazon parrot video!

I'm very confused about why a tropical fruit diet automatically equals difficult. Wouldn't that depend on what you live and how readily available tropical fruit is? Is there something I'm missing? I've considered getting an ekkie in the past but I always find people saying their diet is too hard and giving no other reason. (I did eventually give up on the idea, but that's because they can apparently be very hormonal, not because of their diet.)
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
Compared to how most parrots really just need a pellet diet as the staple, something like a daily mix that needs the be fresh is a bit more difficult, and if you're on vacation and need a caretaker, it's a lot more difficult to train others to do it.
@maggieharris2613
@maggieharris2613 3 жыл бұрын
@@Fivesaflock That makes sense. I hadn't thought about the caretaker aspect. I'm coming from the perspective of someone who already keeps reptiles, so I borderline-forgot that most petsitters aren't going to be used to providing a more "exotic" or involved diet.
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
@@maggieharris2613 What do you keep? I also used to keep a number of reptiles. But yeah, the caretaker aspect is a big deal. I've lost some reptiles in the past because of caretaker issues. Losing a parrot would be an even worse feeling.

@@Fivesaflock I have snakes and invertebrates, but I once petsat a bearded dragon for over two months. But yes I agree. I know one person I'd trust with an ekkie diet and I don't know if she even takes birds. (Actually three but two definitely wouldn't take a parrot.)

this might be a strange question, and the answer may seem obvious, but i want a definitive answer from someone who knows what they're talking about. i worked with all sorts of birds as an animal carer for about 6 months. this included birds of prey, parrots and even common birds like jackdaws but my favourite birds to work with was a pair of macaws. for the past while i've been considering getting a macaw, but i'm worried that since i've never kept a bird as a pet, only as a job, it might be too much as a beginner. what's your thoughts on this?
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock Жыл бұрын
If you worked with birds as a job, you understand bird body language. I would say you'll be fine with a Macaw. I don't recommend them to most people cuz most people have never even handled a bird to begin with before. But I would think you're more than prepared.

Where do Indian ring necks land as far as beginner bird?
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue is they often get rehomed because beginners don't understand Ringnecks go through a massive "teenage phase" where it looks like they just hate your guts. If you to go through the scars and bites with them and never stop interacting with them and eventually they get over it after a few months to a year. After that, they become one of the best pet birds you can get. They're definitely a bird that you can't have at their best unless you have them at their worst.

I had a blue and gold. he was extremely sweet and affectionate and CLINGY. I can tell you buzzard was a handful. He needed ALL your attention or he would scream a lot. Never again. On the other hand we had a orange wing Amazon in the family and that bird was simply amazing! I cannot begin to tell you how hilarious baby was and how intelligent she was. Although she was very affectionate she was also independent and could handle being alone. She was full of surprises and I didn’t find her hard to care for at all after dealing with the macaw. Again macaws are amazing creatures but never again.

I have male and female eclectus parrots, and the males and females have very different personalities. So I must disagree on one itsy bitsy point - the males are very social birds. My boy Johnny loves to interact, and is very easy to train because he's so damn eager to train. Its the females that like to sit back and watch the world burn.
