A few months ago I got a 2002 Carrera 4S. It is without question the best car I've ever driven. I was lucky enough to get the car with a 4-page CarFax service history, new clutch, new tires, IMS ceramic bearing and rear main seal all fixed. My car has 154,000 miles on it and drives like new. It does 0-60 in 4.5 sec and tops at 180mph, handles like a dream in dry or wet and cost me $19,000. It's the performance car deal of a lifetime! ....also my daily driver in Pennsylvania. Great video - thanks for sharing!

For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745

I had one for 6 years and they great cars. Took it for a track weekend. It ran all out all day with no problems. I spent about $2,000 CAD a year and put on about 50,000 km. The 99s the IMS is fine because they are a dual row bearing unlike the later models which have a larger single row bearing. Because of that the 99s were excluded from the IMS class action suite. That said, the seal does leak ie. the three pronged IMS cover needs to be replaced every 40,000 km or so. Other than that they are as great as the video says. And you can get after market cup holders if you want.

I bought my 2001 996 in 2005. I like things new so I replaced the interior and top. Also, I had the car chipped added a cold air intake and short shifter. I changed the tires Michelin Pilot Sports and wheels to 18 inch original Carrera Chrome Wheels which I bought from LA Wheel. Recently I replaced the IMS bearing (didn't want to take chances) and since I am the 3rd owner decided to replace the clutch since they are their anyway. I only have 32K on the car and being it is over 15 years old able to get Classic Insurance which is cheap. My car looks and runs like new and had may offers to sell, but that's not happening. Take care of the car and you will keep it and not want to sell.

I'm thinking about a 996. Two years ago, I got a '99 986 for 9 grand, 50K miles. Since then I have put $700 into it to replace the window regulator, alternator, and battery- no other needs besides new tires and oil change. Yes, thank you haters and mass market economics for making this car affordable, and thanks Ferdinand for making it alternately a pleasure and a thrill to drive. If this is a "hairdresser's car," I'm gonna go to beauty school- they must know something the rest of us don't.

I had a 996 for a couple years, they are an incredible value and such a well engineered car. It's crazy how the base 911s and the Cayman S' and such haven't really evolved a ton as far as performance. You can get 90% of the newer Porsche performance in the 996.

Germans have made a great car with the Porsche name. I have a 2003 C4S 996 with under 50,000 miles. It's incredibly made, unlike the cheap BMWs with spray on plastic that peels, glass windows that fall down, water container for windshield cracked and this car was expensive. BMW 330i and the car feels like a piece of junk! It was junk. Got rid of it and never will buy another BMW! Porsche is built like a TANK!!! Love my C4S 996 with enhanced exhaust system. Get the IMS, RMS and Clutch fixed and I don't worry. Enjoy a bona fide well- made top of the line PORSCHE! Rather have it than a turbo. More money to fix when things go wrong and make sure to get a stick shift. Many thieves don't know how to drive a stick shift.

Great positive review and totally agree! My 996 has been good to me and so much fun to drive. Only 5% of cars had issues with the IMS bearing and typically go before 50 miles. Find a good local Euro mechanic and the cost of maintenance is not bad at all. Search for deals. Paid only $1200 (CDN) for a set of Michelin Super Sports per spec. Manual transmission drain and fill, fuel filter and brake flush for $350, for example. It was my dream to have a 911 and now a reality!

Tires were the biggest expense on my 986, and same on my 997.2 to date. My 2001 986 (which I owned from 2005 until 2013) was the most reliable car I ever owned, and the cheapest to run. The only reason it wasn't the least expensive to own was the rapid depreciation in the later years as cheap, beater 986s took over the market. But my loss on that car is now a buyer's gain as 986 & 996 have likely bottomed out in value. 996TT, all 997.1 & 997.2 cars are now going up in value... so this may be the last days of the bargain 996!

I sold my 2003 996 Cabriolet in black two years ago. This hard top brings the longing fresh again. It was mechanically sound but when I sold it the were some things that were broken that were expensive to fix. The radio had stopped working, the left turn signal stopped working, the top would not go up and down and it was time to replace the wires in the convertible top. All in all about $6,000 of repairs and maintenance items. My next Porsche will be a hard top. Some other known maintenance items that will fail in the first 60,000 miles are the water pump, the oil pressure sending sensor and O2 sensors.

As you mentioned, the ability to take Porsches to the track or autocross repeatedly without having any problems is one of my favorite reasons for owning one. The brakes wont fade, the engines won't overheat, it won't go into limp mode, it won't throw codes like all other cars. When I go to the track or autocross, I see many of the other cars having problems when pushed hard because they aren't built for it. Also, at the end of the day, you can drive it home & run errands with it on a daily basis. I drive mine every day & will always have a Porsche in my garage.

Euphorica I mean, i'm not a purist. Becuae i don't like those ppl, they only think that classic Porsches are good. That's very narrowminded. I don't deny that cars like the Macan are anything less than amazing. But i have a petrolhead heart and i don't like those new age nerds either. They're TOO openminded. My petrolhead heart, it's bleeding now that Porsche has soo lil backbone and throws EVERYTHING overboard. I have nothing against modern cars. Yet that doesn't mean i don't value heritage and principles. Also, cars are being PUSSIFIED and less involving. The 90's-2008 cars were still communicative. Even a 991 GT3 RS, NOT delivered as a manual..... electronic powersteering, silly gadgets, several suspension modes, eco-fascist rubbish, digital gismos, safety features, driver's aids, 4 wheel steering, no atmospheric engines. Only the 911R is pure, but that's a very limited edition. NONE of the new 911s have the magic of the 996. But the biggest shock came last week. TAKE A DEEP BREATH and HOLD TIGHT! Porsche announced............ That their newest 911 in the future will have a 4 cylinder hybrid diesel engine!!!!! O H M Y GOD....... they are INSANE! This is the biggest automotive heressy EVER. And there have been plenty forms of blasphemy in the sports/supercar industry already.

I had one of these for nearly 2 years until recently and it's the only car I ever had where I would get one again. Repair costs can be high but you can do a lot yourself - as I did. Lots of info on youtube how to and a lot of it is common sense if you know a bit about cars. Make sure you use the proper fully synth mobile1 oil. If you are buying one - service history is essential and good idea to get it looked over by a specialist. But - the MAIN reason to get one of these now is because prices are on the up and it could be now or never.

The 996 is the BEST 911 model by far! Sure the newer ones looks cooler and got the latest gadgets but because they have more computers they are more likely to break as oppose to the 996 that doesn’t have a lot of computer work! And they are fun to drive! I used to own a 2002 porsche 911 Cab! I recommend anyone to get the 996 if they are in the market to buy a porsche!

I have a 996 carrera 4 cab. I had a supercharger on it when the IMS hit me at about 32k miles. Porsche had a program at the time and they were swapping our cors left and right on 996s and boxters for about 12 grand. So of course they removed the vortec. always wish I'd spent the extra 10 grand for a used turbo but 70k was a little too rich for my blood in 2005. Still is and I'm still paying it off but that flat six boxer engine still idles perfectly smooth and cant touch the performance for 10k but I'd never sell mine. hell I spent 7500 just for some new wheels and tires. These cars are pretty high end given they cost close to 100k when new.Like little tanks they have incredible light awd systems one touch convertible tops. very sophisticated and full of features. Just make sure you save 2k for a new clutch, or 1600 for a tune up. everything on a porsche cost 1000 it seems but u cant beat the driver experience and modern amenities.

High mileage 996 intend to last way longer then a low mileage 996 anything under 40,000 miles are likely to have the highest failure rates of IMS failures. if you think about buying a low mileage 996 have a technician inspect the IMS bearing as soon as you can to see if the bearing is'okay my suggestion is even if the bearing is good I would add the direct oil feed which feeds clean filtered oil onto the bearing that way It can stay nice and cool and also avoid a failure in the future.

I owned a 993 in 95, fun car...I just purchased a 2000 996 with 193k...received 4 pages of service from 17k on...2 previous owners and I am #3...the car looks brand new, no paint and performs like a mouse with slippers going to his first ball... less than 5% of 996 will experience IMS and altho I suggest lower miles porsche owners to have it diagnosed, my mechanic who I have a very good relationship with has emphatically stated that if IMS will happen it would generally be in first 100k...and a high mile porsche may just be what the Dr ordered if it has been maintained meticulously say over a low mileage track ride beat to shit...A big indicator is if the car was CPO and qualified for this program...mine was I am having the time of my life with this car and I picked it up for 15k...and I will continue the care and love for this car like its past...the only concern I have for the 996 is that it doesnt slip into the 928s4 curse where when they were dumped in the 90's for 8-12k it opened the market for a budget buyer with no pension for maintenance and thus these incredible machines were laid to waste...a 928s4 GT is something to drive...I digress, great video and happy driving!!!!

Awesome garage inventory of cars selected I really like that SRT but only con is im not much of an American Muscle type of guy. So Porsche 911 is definetely on my list because they seam to have a higher opportunity of become a futures classic and they hold value for a long time which is another perk drive for a year or two sell for almost the same price it was originally purchased at. WIN/WIN but never the less, great content "The Fast Lane Car" keep up with the videos u gained ur self a new subscriber today. Thanks again for all the necessary information!

The MR2 spyder is somewhat like a Boxster, but more fun at low speeds due to it's low weight and size. Also, they're bulletproof reliable and well made (not quite porsche well-made, but surprisingly nice). Definitely can't hang with the boxster on a track but anybody who says they're not fun simply hasn't driven them. This is all talking stock of course, a 2ZZ spyder might even be able to outrun a Boxster S.

I still own a classic porsche. I went into it completely unaware of the cost to maintain it. I got it to go to the track. I would say on average I was spending 15k a year. I still own it and I take it out now and then for just short fun drives. But really it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I will probably never buy another porsche. More important, I will never take an expensive car to the track. I will stick with mazda, honda and subaru for the track.

@VirusTornado
@VirusTornado 8 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I must say that at 90k miles, any car's service history starts shining through, and your car was probably thrashed especially being a 4S model (basically a Turbo without the Turbo). Anyway, the point it 90K miles is A LOT of miles for any sports car.
@Fahmbo
@Fahmbo 8 жыл бұрын
any well made modern ICE car should last 200,000 miles or more. I've had a few cars, some sport some not, that go past 200k. Being a sports car is no excuse for lack of durability. If I design a jet and not an airliner, I cannot tell the pilot "oh yeah well it's made to go fast so it wont last." Upkeep is important, but plenty of hi performance cars go the distance without needing constant attention. Porsche makes a fantastic car, but they are still VW - room for improvement.
@VirusTornado
@VirusTornado 8 жыл бұрын
Fahmbo With all due respect, your analogy is ridiculous. My point is the car's service history has a lot to do with how well it lives past 60-70-80-90k miles. This is especially true for a sports car. Naturally aspirated 911s put a lot of stress on the engine due to their high-revving nature. That's why a 911 Turbo is sometimes more reliable (revs less). My point still stands, you need to maintain your car well to get good results. 911s are known to be reliable, I know from experience as well. Don't tell me "any car can be reliable if you maintain it". That's absolute BS. In 2006, my dad fancied a Jaguar... The lights and other electronics started to go out on their own at less then 20k miles. Needless to say, he sold it.
@alexstern3583
@alexstern3583 8 жыл бұрын
VirusTornado Service history is everything I agree. I leaned a few hard lessons with that car and I understand that some people have good experiences with them. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully I will own another 911 again someday because I love how they drive, but for now I realize cars like that have a reason for being $87k in 2003 and $25k just 10 years later.
@VirusTornado
@VirusTornado 8 жыл бұрын
Alex Stern Here's the thing though; 997s didn't depreciate as much as the 996's. Furthermore, 996 prices already started picking up. A 996 Turbo is fairly expensive now, and X51 996 Turbos are going at stupid prices. C4S 996s are demanding a good premium over a C2S. Porsches literally always appreciate in value over time, but they must hit rock-bottom first. GT3s hold their value best.

Im able to buy a 02 911 Carrera Cabrio that is silver with a black top and black interior. Original owner car, never seen bad weather always kept in heated garage Undercover. It has 23k on it and also has had that expensive ims bearing just done and always maintained. The car is a 9.5 out of 10 only not giving at that point five because it isn't brand new. I could buy it for 25k right now. What do you think I should do I would love to own it? The watercooled cars have a GREATLY reduced tendency to go off the road backwards due to the longer wheelbase and strut-type suspension (no more trailing arms). And many/most 996s came with Porsche Stability Management which reduces that tendency even more. In the same corner where your M3 is starting to step out the 996 would likely just be glued.
