@@aaaa-cm1tq im at 150k miles on my FSI jetta and its kind of both, I can understand repairs and maintenance being a hassle, especially on vw cars, thats why if you are going to buy one second hand, I would emphasize that you buy one that you KNOW has been well maintained, cause it could be a real snowball if not. But if you genuinely take care of these cars, they will take care of you, and these cars engines are tanks when treated good tbh. I have needed repairs done on my car however my reasons were due to poor maintenance from the previous owner, however the only big boy repair that was needed that actually costed me were needing new fuel injectors (the last owner still had the original fuel filter on the car! It was completely clogged up which is what ended up burning my cylinder 4 injector and caused the misfire issues i was having, without counting that, Ive never had to do anything crazy expensive to the car got her fixed up now and shes now runs just as smooth as when I bought her! All thats next is a new diverter valve for my turbo and new cv boots both parts less than $60 each and shes 100% good to go, shes gone 30k miles since then keep your oil and transmission in check, and keep an eye on that cam follower to the fuel pump and youre golden these engines do not like dirty oil so change it every 4000-5000 miles around there and only use FULL synthetic do your transmission service before 40k miles and keep up with changing the cam follower to the fuel pump, its like $12 for a new one, get a new one every 20k. If you can do those 3 things, you can own a gti/jetta everything else is just common maintenance

I've had my 2007 GTI for a year now. Put 30,000miles on it in my year of ownership. The poor thing had a previous owner in the form of a high school kid, which means the car was abused, and poorly maintained. I probaby spent $3k putting everything to how it should be, which is to say: perfect. I had to replace the turbo, radiator, timing belt kit, valve cover with the gasket, PCV valve, cam chain and tensioner, oil filter housing, several vacuum lines, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, and a full exhaust system since he cut the old one out. But with this all done, the car drives beautiful, and really really moves. I'm Uni Stage 1 right now, after I'm done doing rust repair, shes going stage 2 with the downpipe. I love the damn thing and it has over 170,000 miles on it.

My last car was a MK5 GTI, and it really was a very lovely machine. My main issue with it had to do with the self-adjusting clutch mechanism in the slave cylinder/throw out bearing. If you did a rev-matching downshift where you have to rev fairly high (4k+), about 1/10 times the clutch pedal would stick down and you would have to pop it up with your foot. I brought it to so many mechanics. I bled it so many times, swapped the master cylinder, removed the fluid limiter that slows down how quickly it engages, you name it. The only thing left was a slave cylinder, which would require pulling the entire bell housing off and would probably have taken 5+ hours of mechanic time just to get to, and if you're doing all that you had better swap the whole clutch, and even then you aren't guaranteed that that will fix the problem if it's crank endplay, which is basically a "throw the engine away" problem. I loved how it handled, how smooth the power came on, how easily I could balance the snap oversteer to have fun on twisties, but without a happily functioning clutch the whole car was always just 1 pop away from pissing me off ;( Now I drive a BMW 135i and need to trail break into corners I used to just drop the hammer on with the GTI. The steering is much stiffer on my hydraulic assisted rack (2012) and transmits a lot more information to the wheel, but the gearing isn't as nice and without a LSD the car can't do a burnout or maintain a powerslide or anything. The GTI was just as fun, and if I had one that never gave me a clutch issue, I would still be driving it today.

Hi there, nice video. I always appreciated the quality and effort you put in these videos. I just have one question, maybe it might be sound familiar for you. Since last month when I bought my first MK5 GTI I have noticed there are some slooow coolant leaks on the transmission box. Every day when the engine is cold I stick my hand underhood to clean it. And it leaks even when not driving, I just left it overnight and checked in the morning and another fresh drop of leak was present. As you can see below, I have also some maroon "dirt" on the lower part of the brake boost vacuum pump (I think it's sealant, can't clean it, so I think maybe the last owner tried to seal the pump - he doesn't answer the phone or e-mails of course), and it leaks even more slowly, but it leaks engine oil (Soon I'll take the engine cover off, battery and check the sealing for that pump and replace it in the first place). But the coolant is not coming from that pump, because that pump is filled only with engine oil as humble mechanic showed in one of his fixing videos. Any idea where the coolant leak might come from? The engine is 2.0 TFSI, AXX engine code (european), 200HP stock. Brakes are working well, acceleration the same, nothing seems different than normal driving... Here's a video I made when I first saw the problem: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pp9-qaaFvqjVeac.html and this is a more recent video (where I learned to focus the camera first, then worry about the light) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJehaquIxLrLiIE.html and here are some photos: imgur.com/gallery/EFVzWdq and here some to form an idea where it's located: imgur.com/a/sucM7UB Cheers. edit: timing belt was last changed on September 2016 if this info makes any difference.
@RatchetWrenches

Claudiu B. Shit I just saw this but honestly there’s so many things that can cause that leak. It could be the thermostat since it’s over by there. Could be lines running to it. It’s so hard to diagnose things over videos and not seeing it in person so I don’t wanna mislead you but I’m sure there’s a pinhole or something in one of the coolant lines
@ClaudiuB
@ClaudiuB 4 жыл бұрын
@@RatchetWrenches, You're right. It seems to be coming from the thermostat. I hope it's just a line, and I don't have to change all of the case. I noticed that somehow it's coming from the connector in the video which is right under the brake boost vacuum pump, as it's wet and right after I clean the coolant, another two-three drops are falling on the transmission box exactly from the connector. But idk what is that connector for. Maybe it's a sensor for coolant and it has a bad sealing. Will check after this weekend (I have a long ride to do, so don't wanna touch anything before). Thanks and Cheers!

@@RatchetWrenches it gets the car to another level! First of all you are gonna need some extra upgrades to get the most out of the K04, like an intercooler (s3 would do!), high pressure fuel pump etc. Bigger brakes should also be considered if you drive aggressively! Software upgrade for the dsg should also be installed, in order for your gearbox to handle the extra torque. A well built mk5 dsg K04 can compete with much higher cars!

I love my GTI. I impulse bought it when it was for sale a dealer in town, the interior is solid af but it has some rust and the paint clear coat is peeling off. I've had it for a few months. Also I have a baby on the way so I put it on sale as the boot wasn't quite big enough and I wanted 2k more for it and had a buyer ready, however I test drove some SUVs and station wagons and on a beautiful day I said fuck it, I'm going to keep it and make it work as it was just amazing on a nice day. It has chip upgrade too and a throaty filter so it's just fun to thrash it every chance I get. Wish it had rear parking sensors and a sunroof but I am very very happy about it. If my entrepreneurial projects succeed I will source a mint normal GTI Mk5 and keep it forever. Also, fun fact, Henry Catchpole, an accomplished and highly regarded car journalist from UK, stated that the GTI Mk5 has one of the best steering wheels of all time and I have to agree! Go ahead and buy these cars guys, they are amazing do it all kind of cars!

I'm 15, and my dad recently bought a candy white 2009 mk5 GTI. It was pretty cheap, I don't remember the exact number, but it was cheap. It needs some work, the previous owner neglected it's maintenence, and we want to get everything fixed before driving it. So far it seems like a great car, reviews everywhere agree its wonderful. Personally I didn't really like the mk5's styling, but its started to grow on me. I would just do some color matching to the black plastic bumper, and side skirts. I also hate the way the fake fents look (around the fog lights), so would opening those vents do anything negative to the stock engine??
@RatchetWrenches
@RatchetWrenches 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah now these things are going for pretty cheap! But I agree the color matching will change the appearance big time! I’ve been meaning to do that. I actually switched my fake vents to ventilated ones and there wouldn’t be any harm in that. I doubt it but it could even be more helpful allowing more air flow into the engine. I doubt it’s much but fresh air is always better

The Mk5 with the FSI is damn near indestructible if you maintain it properly. You could floor it and shift your gears at 7000 rpm all over town 99% of the time and the only thing it'll hurt is your wallet because of the extra gas you'll have to buy XD. I've got about 106k miles on my GTI running a Custom stage 2+ (upgraded HPFP) high torque tune and dsg map that runs about 20-25 lbs of boost and essentially runs a race setup A/F ratio, and she's still rocking the original turbo. there are little things that usually need to get replaced every so often, like maybe your DV needs to be replaced/upgraded, maybe you need to replace you valve cover, etc which really isn't all too difficult or expensive if you're willing to do it yourself. The mk5 will give you the same amount of love back as you give it. Not only that but for a 4 banger, the FSI sounds amazing. It has this visceral, deep, screaming roar that not many other 4 cylinders have under WOT, and don't forget the DSG farts.
@RatchetWrenches
@RatchetWrenches 4 жыл бұрын
Biggest facts I’ve heard bahah. So true. Like as long as you maintain it, it’ll run like a charm. I love my FSi! And I whip it around town hence so many speeding tickets but still you can’t beat this engine/car.

Before swapping the old FSI engine it never really failed on me. The only time I swapped an MK6 R engine was because of the engine blowing up when I went Stage 3 😁.
