Great Video! I for one, absolutely love my SX190. Very reliable, great ski boat, and lots of room and comfort up top. I would definitely recommend a Yamaha boat for a first time buyer and will continue to own Yamaha boats.

The engines are made for running at high rpm. They are the same motors that were designed for Yamaha's waverunner line and they all have their roots in race motorcycle technology. Yamaha makes a great engine. As for the plugs, what you're reading about is called a plug blowout and, while they don't happen often they do happen. Typically it is from someone installing the plug incorrectly. We have developed a system that helps with preventing this from happening (accidental improper installation)

How well do the engines hold up running at those high rpm's and some people I read complain about problems with some water plugs in the boat near the engines? Im thinking about buying one for a new location Im moving to down at Saint James City on Pine Island new Boca Grand. Like the shallow water abitlity to explore the island s around there like Cayo Costa. How is the mileage aruning say around 25mph?

Great presentation ! Lot of info - even dealer can't tell you that because they simply don't know ... I am considering AR190 - can you provide some link out of manufacturer web site with tech data, fuel consumption etc. BTW is there any possibility that engine - power system - will suck small stones from the bottom of the lake when cruising on shallow water ? Thanks !

Im seriously thinking of buying this boat, just nothing comparable for the money, entry level person like me, wants reliability, value, and its a good looking boat, and i like the fact it does not have props, as well as getting in and out is a breeze, probably the SX190 is fine for me.
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 11 жыл бұрын
The AR190 will not pick up rocks off the bottom unless you're running at RPM greater than idle in water under 2 feet deep. When you are in minimum safe idle depth (about knee deep water) the boat will not ingest large debris into the intake if the engine rpm is at idle power. I have a video to prove that. As for the data that you're requesting search KZfaq for a boat test.com video called Yamaha 190 Series Test 2012- By BoatTest.com.

I totally get what you're saying but from a manufacturer's perspective here's how I see it. Yamaha is in the lead in this part of the boating world and can raise prices if they are still well below the competition. I would do that if I were in their shoes. They also do innovate and have been demonstrating that all througout their sport boat history. Look at the first 4 stroke 230 model. You can now buy a 19 footer that has nearly as much overall seating as the original 23 footer.

New to boating and live in the St Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Would this boat (or any jet drive) be suitable for island hoping between St Thomas, St John and the BVI? Or am I stuck with a power cat or deep V? Thanks
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 7 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of customers island hopping from Bimini to other smaller islands and I even have some travelling as far as Nassau. These boats are ideal for shallow water and places where you're not familiar with the bottom. If for some reason you were to come into contact with the bottom you don't run any risk of dragging a lower unit or prop across the bottom. To be safe monitor your depth gauge which is very accurate on the newer model boats and try to keep the boat in at least knee deep water to prevent sand ingestion into the pump. I hope this helps.

I don't like the Rotax motors, and I assume the Yammy's rev at the same high RPM. I had an older Seadoo Challenger jet boat that was superior because it had the Mercury sportjet 240 HP motor. That thing was bulletproof! I removed the oil injection system, which is the only thing that caused these motors problems, and it was then the simplest boat on the water. Absolutely no maintenance except a fluid change every couple yrs. Another great thing about the Merc is that it was a 2 stroke motor--more efficient power-wise than a 4 stroke--just not as ecofriendly since they burn oil while running.
@sauniergmail
@sauniergmail 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry man, but your info is all great, for 15 years ago.. the brp 4 strokes are incredible engines that are ultra efficient and darn near bulletproof . Since 2004, the 4tec engines are simply badass. Before that, seadoo rorax 2 strokes were shit. Too many problems. But the 4 strokes are superior in every way. As stated earlier, your statements are correct, but for 15 years ago. No one, and I mean, no one that is educated today would buy a 2 stroke over today's 4 strokes.

I am new in this world, i would like to have this boat can i have it on a marina overwater? It do not affect anything on the boat, when i go to the closest marina i never see any jetboat the closest thing that i see is a tiara 35000 why is this? Between the chaparral 285 ssx and the yamaha 242 limited s which is better for weekend trips twice a month?
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 9 жыл бұрын
You don't want to leave a Yamaha jet boat in salt water for extended periods of time such as 1 week or more. The boat will do fine hanging in a slip or on a lift. I am not familiar with the Chaparral 285 but it sounds like a bigger boat. The Yamaha is great for day trips but I am not able to give you good info as to your specific needs without knowing how many people that you plan on taking and where the boat will be located.

@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 9 жыл бұрын
In what way? I'd like to hear how in one year of jet boat production Chaparral could make a better jet boat than the near 20 year veteran Yamaha.
@virtual_warbirds
@virtual_warbirds 9 жыл бұрын
Because Chaparral is arguably the best sport boat manufacturer in the world. Yamaha couldn't dream to compete with them in terms of the boat itself. I would agree that the yamaha power plant is better than brp (minus the closed cooling), but Yamaha just doesn't mass produce boats like Chaparral so they can't afford to use the same quality materials. So, you have a thick kevlar reinforced hull vs. a normal hull, you have an extended v-plane hull vs. a normal hull, you have 36 oz. expanded vinyl vs. normal vinyl, you have a gel coated helm vs. a plastic one. Also, Chaparral uses ame 4000 resin to prevent hull blistering, in addition to their superior quality gel coat. I like yamaha. I have a yamaha sterndrive on my Chap, but you can't compare a yamaha jet boat to a world class boat like a Chaparral or Cobalt with jet power.
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 9 жыл бұрын
If I am not mistaken Yamaha does mass produce boats, somewhere to the tune of many thousands per year. I am not at liberty to share the exact number but it is not a small company. Now with that said, I do believe that the Yamaha will not have the level of fit and finish in regards to the list that you just brought up, and Chaparral will have a leg up in that regard. But the end result customer does not buy a new boat solely on those factors. They first have to be educated on what you just mentioned and then they have to believe all of what you said is true. I am not an expert on Chaparral boats or their hulls so I will have to trust you and your statements and their validity. From my own experience in selling these boats for many years now, I have found that Yamaha boat buyers are drawn to the 5 things that were mentioned in the video. When this video was produced these three new boat makers did not have a dog in the hunt. With that said I believe that Yamaha will be forced to innovate in some of the areas that you mentioned. They will get better. They are great, but they can improve. Bottom line is that in the jet boat game, no one is going to swoop in with a name brand and do any substantial damage to Yamaha's market share with zero time under their belts in the jet boat business. If they have the stay power and stamina to grow their presence in the jet boat market then they could do well. You see, the real hurdle for Glastron and Chaparral is going to be an internal fight to win over their own sales team, their stern drive experts who've bashed the little toy jet boats for the past decade. They have to be won over and get on board with pushing this new breed of boat. Jet Boats are not much different from any other boat when it comes to the sales process. It really comes down to getting your entire organization on board with making the product successful. Yamaha is very good at that and I believe that even if they had a boat that had some short comings by comparison to the Chaparral, they would still outsell them for many years into the future.

Yamaha lists 220 Fsh at $64k my out the door price was $79k. Factor off the lot depreciation and you’re instantly under water. Depreciation is based off the msrp and not what I would pay. When you say best fuel economy "in class" what class are you talking about? Jet boats? 😂😂 Yes jet boats have improved a lot in efficiency but so have every other type of boats, outboards are 4 cylinder and fuel injected too, and still far surpass a similar jet powered boat, jet boats slip more than a boat with a prop, yes they have advantages but this can never be overcome they simply have more power train loss due to slip and will never be as fuel efficient as a propeller on a similar boat/motor setup

Everyone of these points addresses why JETBOATS are better, but none explain why YAMAHA is better. Why is a Yamaha jet boat “better” than a Scarab, for example?
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 3 жыл бұрын
At the time we shot this video Yamaha was the only jet boat maker. SeaDoo had stopped making boats and chaparral/Scarab had not begun making jets. But to answer the question, Yamaha is better than the other brands because they have been making jetboats since 1996. That's 25 years of R&D, learning from customers, learning from dealers, learning what works and what does not. Scarab and Chaparral make a fine boat but they're just getting started and it will take them years to catch up with the leader Yamaha. Additionally nothing outperforms a Yamaha engine in salt water.

Bottomline you have to NOT know ANYTHING about boating, to buy a Yamaha boat. Think about it, put everything aside for a minute, the brand itself is all over the place. Do they specialize in boats, motorcycles, or music equipment??? Scarab blows Yamaha away from every standpoint in the jet boat market. Yes, it is more expensive but you get what you pay for. I am a high performance inboard/outboard sterndrive guy. Been so for 30 years... Just got a Scarab 255 impulse and let me tell you, my 2008 Baja 30 Outlaw is going to see a lot less water (even though it is modified to be an 85 mph boat). Jet boats, BY NATURE, NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE MANUFACTURED BY YAMAHA, are a lot easier to maintain, more fuel efficient, and their shallow draft make it in sort that you can go places you could not go before. On the downside, you can't really take them offshore unless its the perfect day. This video just proved to me that Yamaha is desperately hanging on to the image of reliability, that they have somehow earned with their outboards, and trying to spread that image across their jet boat line, because that is the only thing they have going for them. The problem for Yamaha is that reliability is not really a major concern when it comes to jet boats. They are basically glorified jet skis, and jet skis have always been pretty reliable. In my opinion, and I know its subjective when it comes to matters of taste, but the design of their boat is not all that. The engines are not powerful enough, especially since you can not trim up a jet boat (not yet anyways; waiting for the press release from Scarab stating that trim is now available, since Scarab seems to be the one to come up with innovations that resolve inherent jet boat issues, such as IST). The quality, attention to detail, and the fit and finish of the materials used are not above average either. Guess what? That is why they can sell them at the price point they are selling them at. The articulating keel is simply a band-aid, a "duck tape fix". And they really should not call it a total package, when all they are giving you is an ugly trailer, manufactured by a third-party. I don't know if Scarab manufactures its own trailers, but at least, it sure as hell looks like they do, as it matches the looks of their boats. Chaparral took their original boat and put jet engines in them. Whether that is good or bad, remains to be seen. Common sense tells me that its better to have a boat designed for a specific purpose. Chaparral is a good quality product, as a sterndrive... As a jet boat? I don't know... Its all about balance, power / weight ratio. Even with the strongest Rotax engines on the market, is the Chaparral light enough? I doubt it.

Thank you for that insult. I bet if you ask around you might find out that I do know a thing or two about modern jet boats. I actually have been around Scarab quite a bit as well. They make a fine boat but I still stand by my opinion that Yamaha is the best option. Have a nice day.

Raif Akar I stood in a scarab ON LAND and felt like I was going to fall out, the seats felt like cardboard the steering wheel was like grinding sandpaper on sandpaper and when we did take it on the water we where in three foot waves and buried the bow. Not worth it for safety or for price.
