Testing Methodology:
The scooters were ranked by Ingress Protection: "IP Rating" against water. Braking performance on wet pavement, fender protection, wet vs dry tire traction and deck traction in the wet. The scooters were also subjectively scored for wet weather ride quality.
The IP rating of a scooter is a score for resistance to being exposed to solids and liquids. A typical IP rating for a scooter would be something like IP54. Here, "5" is the dust protection rating, and 4 is the water protection rating. The main thing to know is that the last digit is the one you care about for rain. Higher is better, and the bare minimum for riding in the rain is going to be IPX4.
Braking performance on wet pavement was exactly that. We measured braking performance in the wet and compared stopping distances. This is the only score in the evaluation where a smaller number is better. The winning combination here is a short stopping distance that doesn't supernatural braking skills to pull off.
Fender protection was measured by laying a straight surface from the edge of the tire to the rearward edge of the rear fender. This shows what direction water will spray when leaving the tire and fender. Zero degrees would be no fender at all, with water shooting straight at the rider's ankles and above, where 60 degrees would hit the rider's waist and above, 90 degrees would shoot water straight up, and 180 degrees would shoot water straight back at pavement level. Score is 0 deg to 180 degrees, with higher being better. The most critical number is that the angle be above 90 degrees, so water is going away from the rider rather than towards the rider.
Wet vs dry traction was measured with a drag test. Literally pulling a weighted scooter sideways and measuring the amount of force required to break traction. In this case the wet traction score of each scooter was only compared to the dry traction of that same scooter, giving an indication of how much you would need to adjust your riding on that scooter in the wet vs how you would ride it in the dry. A score of 90% would indicate that you have 90% as much traction in the wet as in the dry. Of course, higher is better with 100% being the highest score and indicating the same traction in the wet as on dry pavement.
Deck traction was measured in a similar manner, pulling a weighted shoe across the deck. Here we were able to compare absolute traction from scooter to scooter, since the weight and contact patch of the dragging device was the same for each test. A higher number here indicates more foot traction.
The subjective score for wet weather ride quality doesn't appear as a score in the video, but was weighted equally to the other criteria when determining the final rankings. The ride quality score takes into account, things like: skill level required to achieve maximum braking in the wet, ease of throttle control, and things like slipping off of the deck of the EMOVE Cruiser during the brake test (something that actually happened, though the slip in the video was staged, of course).

It's not the fastest, prettiest or coolest scooter, but the Ninebot Max is easily the most reliable and upgradeable scooter you can buy. I have taken the Max through torrential rain, slush, crashes, road salt, scorching heat, steep hills, emergency braking and it still works. Obviously this isn't all maintenance-free. You'll need to upgrade some common points of failure like a steel folding mechanism, rear fender reinforcement, valve stems, and bearing replacements, but it is well worth the time and money to do so. The modding community for the Max is also the largest of any scooter. Battery upgrades, firmware hacks (which include fixing the speedometer to show the correct speed), hand-made replacement parts etc. all exist and are easy to find and do. It is the best single-motor scooter you can buy. 4000Km logged and very pleased with it.

I'm curious to hear about the bearing replacements. I always thought sealed bearings lasted a long long time. We almost never had problems with them when I ran repair warehouses for the sharing market, but I have heard of bearing issues on G30's from time to time. What bearings do you recommend. Do they last longer than stock?
@TyrKohout
@TyrKohout 3 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricScooterJuice I purchased SKF 6001 and 6003 bearings for the front and rear respectively. Sealed bearings do last a long time, but the difference here is that industrial automation bearings can withstand significantly higher temperatures without expanding, are sealed more tightly for less leakage, and the balls themselves are less pitted and therefore will allow more power to reach the road (and more smoothly since there is less friction). The first thing I noticed on SKFs was the smoothness of high speed riding and how I felt more stable. They are expensive but well worth it. You will never have to replace a SKF.
@karlax
@karlax 3 жыл бұрын
@@TyrKohout I bought these exact bearings a few weeks after I acquired the Max in May 2020, mostly after hearing horror stories on Facebook owners groups that the factory bearings weren't that great. I waited for these to fail before changing them, and I'm still waiting 3000 kms later... So far so good! The only major maintenance I had to do was changing the rear fender, which broke after 1000kms or so... I reinforced the next one and never had an issue since.... Just to say the Max is quite reliable overall, driving in the rainy streets of Paris (France) non-stop... 😁

Thanks for posting this! Glad to see both the Apollo Explore and Ninebot Max make the list. I recently received my Apollo to replace my Ninebot. The Ninebot performs great in rain, but it is just too slow and I was tired of riding through these NYC streets w/o suspension. Also, I am not a big fan of commuting in the highest speed mode, full throttle, 100% of the time. Can't wait to see how my Explore performs in rain. In addition to the Max and Explore, I have also owned the Cruiser - the Apollo Explore is the best scooter BY FAR!!!

@boilcoildoyle
@boilcoildoyle 2 жыл бұрын
@@wilfredocubero2254 Sure! This is a personal take as I think the cruiser beats out the Explore when it comes to miles per charge, water resistance rating, and keyed “ignition”. For me, the Cruiser did not have a responsive throttle. It was either 0 or 100 with no in-between. I find the Explore to have a much smoother throttle response, not perfect, but smoother.

We chose the Explore because it’s rear wheel drive. I’d be fine with a Pro, but I’d probably run it single motor. Also rear fender protection on the Pro may not be that great. You could end up with a wet leg.

I have the Cruiser and it’s not water resistant . Got caught in a light shower, the throttle started glitching (supposedly waterproof) and upon further inspection the electrics at the front were soaked. This is due to the multiple seams at the front and no gasket of any sort. I suggest you open it up and see if the electrics are dry after hosing it down like that. Emove customer service was 5 stars, but I don’t want to contact them every-time it rains! On the other hand my Ninebot Max has been amazingly dependable and v well constructed. It can take anything you can throw at it! Don’t want to hate on the cruiser (emove), as it’s v good all around, but water resistance is a weak point. Thanks for your content 👍

Thanks. We've put a ton of miles on ours in the rain and have had good results. Glad to hear Voro supported you. My favorite thing about the Max is being able to just hammer the brakes in the wet without really thinking about it, and it just stops with no drama. Not that exciting to ride in the dry, but in the wet not-exciting is exactly what I'm looking for. :-)

I ride my kugoo m4 pro in the rain and snow. But I don't trust it to go in the puddles. The side deck led lights used to do the rainbow color change thing. But since riding it in the snow, there was some steam/smoke coming out and now it only stays a green color. Plus the charging port is on the lower part of the deck board. And yes there is back voltage at the charger port. and if you unplug the charger from the wall maybe by accident and still plugged into scooter, then the charger led will light green instead of red. Also it comes with a cheap rubbery plastic cover that doesn't fully keep water out. But I do trust my gotrax 250 watt scooter. Only 15mph. But I rode that thing through puddles that were above the deck board.

ATTENTION KAABO WOLF WARRIOR OWNERS...... I'm gonna share this,its pretty cool! I own a wolf warrior and looked everywhere for a steering damper and couldn't find one so I bought a exercise band off Amazon called THERABAND grey heavy they are about 7ft long 6inches wide and very thin. I tried a knot around the center red part that the forks turn on and then wrapped it tightly through the 2 forks and the center red part like a figure 8 in and out around the fork stems and red center part then tied another knot at the end. It acts as a steering damper because it holds the front end straight and gives a little resistance when turn but always wants to return to center. THE DIFFERENCE AT HIGH SPEED IS INCREDIBLE TO ME. IT EVEN ALLOWS ME TO RIDE SAFELY WITH 1 HAND IF I HAVE TO ADJUST SOMETHING. It dont hurt to try..... you'll love it!

@ElectricScooterJuice
@ElectricScooterJuice 3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question. I haven't tried it yet, but my first inclination would be to go to Tap Plastics and buy some matte black plastic of similar thickness to the fender. Then I'd cut it to roughly the shape of the existing fender, and then heat it and bend it to match the curve of the existing fender, and then attach it with three allen bolts, 6 little washers (1 each above and 1 each, below) and then drill holes in the fender and extension and bolt them together, being sure to use nylock nuts.

I’ve owned the cruiser for over 6 months and have had and solved a ton of common issues, as well as know voros customer service in and out,so I’m familiar with this scooter. The scooter itself , meaning the deck and where the battery is encased, is ipx6 water resistant. However all of the components aren’t water resistant at all. Meaning the throttle, the headlight, and the turn signals are not safe from even light rain . You will hear noises after getting the scooter wet, ranging from the beeping the turn signal makes, to loud frequencies or loud cracklings sounds all coming from the front headlight. The noise will stop a few hours or a few days after you’ve gotten the scooter wet. This always happens to me. As soon as I turn the key in the ignition I’ll hear an annoying sound coming from the headlight. There’s times where I have to deal with it for up to 4 days until it randomly stops. Also watch out for the scooter powering off. That will happen if your commuting for long in the rain. You have to keep powering the scooter back on . It can be dangerous if your not aware of that and the power cuts while your in an intersection. That issue as well will randomly solve itself after a few hours up to a few days. There’s been countless times where I have to ride while staring at the throttle to make sure it doesn’t shut off. But every time, eventually it’ll just work like normal again. If you have any questions or issues with the cruiser, I’ve probably experienced it so feel free to ask.

My nanrobot d5+ is definitely not water proof in anyway... It's got 5000 miles and bin through snow mud rain high wind rain through deep puddles and sunk in wet sand and some how it seems to keep going... I bought it broken for 600 bucks with just under 400miles on the odo which isn't entirely accurate and fixed it with 33 dollars in parts and bin going ever since regular maintenance and some tweaking on the breaks every now and then the only thing is it has mechanical disc breaks it has electronic break assist I turned off due to I'm light and it almost threw me over the bars at lightest intensity. After a good wet ride I will occasionally dry the deck inside where the battery sits but to my surprise the controllers never get hit with water

The front half-fender is terrible when it rains, I eventually starting wrapping the scooter in cling film (plastic wrap, saran wrap) as cleaning the scooter every journey just became annoying, The water shoots up towards the stem then goes everywhere, I ended up buying the full front fender so when it's going to rain i use the full fender and in dry i use the half fender, The full fender makes a massive difference and i don't need to use the wrap, the only downside is the full fender rubs slightly against the front forks when you go over bumps and makes some awful sounds.

I have ridden an older scooter that I have in the rain. The brake switch stopped working (switch on the brake lever to operate the e-brake, rear brake light and auto disconnect cruise control). I can’t be sure of that was actually from the rain or cheap Chinese parts. The board makes these creaking and cracking sounds now. After I finish my ride, water that collected under the board (where the battery is) slowly seeps back out. So in conclusion, water and electric don’t mix so regardless of the IP rating, I won’t be riding in the rain.

There are 2 scooters on the market with water ingress included in the warranty ESG! Check out pure electric (Uk and Europe based retailer) who sell the pure air and pure air pro scooters. Both are ip65, 10 inch pneumatic tires, Bluetooth for an app, drum brakes and regen brakes, max load 120kg. The cheaper air is £400 ($550) and is 250 watt rear wheel drive, the pro is £589 ($800) and is 350 watt front wheel drive. The water ingress is covered by warranty for the first year which is great for us in the Uk where we get lots of rain! Only downer is no suspension but very much a xiaomi/ninebot rival!Really want to know ESG’s opinion on these two so get in touch with pure electric! 😀👍🏻

Maybe I'm just horribly unlucky, but I will never ever EVER ride an emove cruiser in the rain again. It's not sealed properly and on more than one occasion the throttle has had severe electrical issues in light rain. I can't believe it's on this list. My experience has been the complete opposite.

So sorry to hear that; we've had good experience with our EMOVE Cruiser in wet conditions, and even opened the deck to inspect for water damage. However, it's true there can be quite a few lemons among electric scooters when they ship. We suggest reaching out to the seller to see if it's worth replacing/fixing (so you don't lose out on your inve$tment). Voro Motors has had a good reputation for responding to customers. Hope you're still riding and thanks for watching! - Trina

@@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide yeah I've gone that route, and they were nice enough to send a new throttle, but I think the controller itself got wet and caused it to be on full throttle permanently until it dried. Apparently my unit came without a front fender, causing the front wheel to literally shoot water directly onto the front of the deck while riding. Eventually a few drops got in and messed with the controller. Fortunately they're sending me a fender as well, but I'm still gonna seal the deck with rubber tape and be extra paranoid whenever there's rain from now on. Thanks for the reply, love your channel!

But it will shred off when you ride it on concrete. My kugoo m4 pro is only rear wheel drive but I did have the tie wire on front wheel because the front will slide to the side. It did help hahaha. When I looked down at my speedometer at a comfortable speed, I was going 20 kilometers per hour. And my GPS tracker that updates every 60 seconds had said my max speed was 16mph. And when the streets were clearing up, that tie wire was slowly shredding off and the front was kind of swaying above 35 kilometers per hour.

who gives these iP ratings? I have opened quite a few Chinese scooters and even the ones with high IP ratings they look very poorly designed to resist moisture. There is hardly any attempt to protect the electronics and displays. They just sort of snap into place, typical of Chinese third world engineering. I think this channel spreads a lot of misinformation about these low quality Chinese products:not a single Chinese scooter survives even light rain, let alone "top 5 for the rain". They are expensive toys, not any sort of alternative green commuting machines we hope for. The future awaits better quality products from somewhere else, not China.
