America has had many steam locomotives preserved and in terms of operational steam that number appears to be growing a lot, however some weren't so lucky being scrapped due to no one wanting them anymore, poor condition, or flat out negligence.

Ok Thunderbolt. Also as a bonus for the other scrapped steam locomotives. Baltimore & Ohio EM-1 659 could’ve been displayed at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland to this day, Norfolk & Western 2143 could’ve been displayed at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin with a new tender built, Buffalo Creek & Gauley #15 could’ve been displayed at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s Train Station in Cumberland, Maryland, Buffalo Creek & Gauley #16 could’ve been undergoing restoration at the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad for return to operation. And as for the locomotive in the thumbnail and ending part of this video Norfolk & Western 2189 could’ve been displayed at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia.

Man I wish GTW 5629 was still with us. The reason I adore this loco is because of how she looked. Not only was she a USRA, and not only was the contrasting black and graphite paint scheme a classical look, but the addition of the long haul tender resulted in a very pleasing combination that captured the classic lines of mainline steam power. But no, Jensen had to throw her away in a fruitless attempt for the almighty dollar. Update* BTW, I know ACL 1504 and "GTW" 5632 are still around so you don't have to remind me. I was just stating why 5629 is one of my favorite locomotives.

It’s a tragedy 5629 got scrapped mostly because of a devious plan by Jenson. No wander nobody likes him anymore after he caused its demise. I used to be on the wrong side and claim it was mostly Metra’s fault. I haven’t been like that against them eversince learning the real truth about Jensen in 2022 from HITD.

It's scrapping stings a lot considering the reason it was scrapped was because it was replaced by another steam locomotive *After* the era of dieselization. Granted it was in atrocious condition, but it's a pity #17 wasn't simply plinthed in a park instead of being cut up for what little scrap value it had left.

In terms of excursion stars on this railroad, particularly Yellowstones No. 222 and 224 of the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railroad. Yellowstone 222 pulled some of the very first excursions on the railroad in July 1958 and pulled some in 1960, it also pulled the last steam powered ore train on the entire railroad in July 1960. it was also seemingly very well taken care of during its career up until it was sadly retired and scrapped in 1963. Yellowstone 224 was given the special honor of pulling an excursion train dubbed “The Illini Special” for the Illini Railroad Club in July 1961, along with Preserved Yellowstone 225 pulling an excursion for the Minnesota Railfans Association. 224 would also be scrapped in 1962. I really do feel that 222 and 224 should’ve been preserved, for their final glory days and the special memories they likely impacted on the railfans to who’ve witnessed them.

Idea for Scrapped Excursion Stars:Southern Pacific 4412
@williamclarke4510
@williamclarke4510 6 ай бұрын
The Bird Brothers bought United Iron in Roanoke. They had lawsuits brought against them in Great Britain and wanted to scrap it because of their experiences there. I was a Roanoke Chapter member 1971- 77. I had not heard anything said about preserving the 2174 at any chapter meetings. Before the February, 1972 meeting, when people were standing around talking, I went up to Carl Jensen and Joe Austin, two of the clique that controlled the chapter. I said "Excuse me. That Y-6 is in that scrapyard to be scrapped, soon It could be gone" They had nothing to say about my comment and turned around and kept talking about whatever they had been talking about. I never heard any discussion of saving the 2174 at any chapter meeting. At one of the chapter meetings , I think March, 1973, there was a business report that the Roanoke Chapter had over $13,000 in cash. In April, 1976, there was a picture of the 2174 being scrapped in The Roanoke Times. The caption read "End of the Line.". I called the Southern Steam Program shop in Irondale AL and contacted my former supervisor, Steve Wickersham, American Freedom Train Chief Mechanical Officer on the Reading T-1. I told him "There's an N&W Y-6 being cut up right now in Roanoke. It has the same type of stoker and feedwater heater that your engine has. Do you want me to try to get you any parts off of it?" ""Yeah, get me the distributing table." he responded. When I got there,I found it, but it had been cut in pieces. So much for any serious effort to save the 2174 by the Roanoke Chapter.

I simply asked Darkness if he'd like to collaborate for a video, he was apparently looking forward to one (being a fan of my content, I'm a fan of his too) and he joined in for the video sneaking in some adlibs that were too funny to leave out. As for the info there's a link in the description.
