As a microbiologist I can only comment and acknowledge that what you said here is 100% true. Especially when it comes to dosing. The stuff you mentioned (disrupted chlorella cells) is made available to plants by bacteria indeed. And it's much better to feed bacteria first, instead of feeding plants directly through KNO3, K2SO4, KH2PO4 and so on, because this way those minerals are released slowly so that algae don't really have a chance to take over - which might happen when supplying inorganic stuff in large amounts directly into water column. Another advantage is that this way you also help microbial community to develop correctly. Especially in tanks like this one, which is rather oligotrophic, so organic matter content is low. Very nice tutorial!

Sławek B. I’m no expert, but have been doing the planted tank hobby for a while now. When I first got into this hobby, a very wise fish store manager told me: all plants get most of their nutrients from roots, not the air or water column. So don’t worry about the water column nutrients. It’s all in the substrate. That simple explanation has been my guide for any planted tank project I do, and it works for me. Great vid, and glad to see others inspiring people to the hobby. ;)

Hey looking good, Dave! How do you balance the light in a tank where there are plants near the surface and also down at the substrate? I have a tank similar to your icelandic setup. I am struggling because if the light is positioned where my grass gets enough, then it just rocks everything near the surface and causes problems. Just wondering if you have any experience with this.

Keeping your tank lighted for longer can be done by using different lights, you can use lower level lights that won’t cause it to grow out of control and then use good grow lights for consistency and growth, I always keep a smaller LED light in the front of the tank just for observation, it can still add to the growth cycle but you can leave it on a lot longer without causing too much damage.

The thing about faith is very interesting, even though many "modern-day" people would disagree. Scientists have to put faith in their methods, because knowledge alone doesnt accomplish anything without faith, otherwise there would be no consistency, let alone patience. And above that is wisdom, which helps us to know what to do with said knowledge. When you find a method most appealing, you believe it, put faith in it and from then on you follow it through. Especially with aquariums, you have to be religious about it. The more you know and care about it, the more faith and patience you stick into it, the more successful you will be. Very important is also listening to other opinions, there are many ways to succeed by learning of different methods. Man I love this hobby!! Your Aquariums are awesome!

aliciacb8284747274 the best way is to dilute it with RO water. Have you tried this? It is more about lowering the carbonate hardness in the water KH, more than it is about the pH value, but they tend to correlate to each other, but not always.

fuckin love actually getting to hear the science of planted tanks. do you know off the top of your head which videos you talk about the benefit of a mature substrate (mainly referring to when you talk about plant root mass) I hear you mention you've done vids about it, but have yet to find em. thanks man love the vids

I have my tanks on a timer. But I forgot to change it this past time change. It comes on later and turns of later. Should I update the timer? The only reason why I ask it because of the indirect light. Its not strong but its there,

Yes if you want to reduce the indirect light for more aesthetic reasons than anything. Otherwise you can just let it stay where it is at. I haven't changed my timer either.

Unfortunately I don't have an area that i can mineralized my soil. Thus must use ferts. What are your favorite ferts? What ferts do you like for red plants?

my substrate is floramax with osmacote plus pellets topped off with a small layer of fine quikrete sand on top, should I worry about plants dying or bacteria?
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 7 жыл бұрын
No that will work. It just doesn't have as many nutrients, so it is good you are using the O+. Some areas that become saturated with nitrogen may become oxygen deficient within the substrate, but it would only be anaerobic areas here and there, nothing to worry about. I assume the sand doesn't have any clay in it? Is it just pure quartz based sand?
@madmax13326
@madmax13326 7 жыл бұрын
Its just the fine quikrete sand, the hope is the plant roots sink down deep enough to bind with the floramax and Osmocote plus

Hi, i love your vids, awesome information. In this particular one you are talking a lot about sand instead of soil as a substrate. My question is, do you think that one could have more difficult plants with just a sand base? I am thinking about building a scape, using Bacopa Australis, Rotala Colorata, Micranthemum Montecarlo, Staurogyne Repens and Alternanthera reineckii mini. The Rotala Colorata and the Micranthemum Montecarlo concern me the most out of this plants, since they count as hard to hold ones. CO2 and Fertilizers should not be the Problem, i have everything for another tank, but i do not want to spent about 150 bucks for the substrate if it's not needed. Sorry for my bad english, i am not a native speaker. I would really appriciate you answering my questions. Have a nice day and keep on doing this great videos and scapes, simply awesome.

Yes you can have more demanding plants in sand. Look at my older "Dutchagumi" aquascape video. I am using just sand and gravel. You just have to dose fertilizers to the water column, and dose pressurized CO2 for the more demanding plants. It can be harder to balance, but it you are very consistent it won't be that hard to do actually.
