6. Get a buoy like seac seamate. It will be more effective visually and since it has 3 big balloons, if needed, you can jump and rest on it Big help 7. The suit must be good material and not a cheap one and in order to keep you warm, MUST apply VERY good on your body, in order to keep it warm. If there are gaps between the suit and your body, water will fill those gaps and will loose warmth really really fast. Hence, will loose dive time

Excellent choice of upgrades. I just got some fiberglass fins that are night and day compared to my cheap plastic scuba fins. Weight vest and pee tube are very soon coming.

If you get a weight vest make sure to get one with a ball at the back and not a clasp. It's really hard to ditch your belt with a clasp. They can be great just make sure you and your buddy know how to ditch. For the pissette you can get a one way check valve instead of the neoprene. You only have to make a small hole and they work really well.
@kouvanos
@kouvanos 6 жыл бұрын
BurninatorTheTrogdor neoprene works better than any other accessory. You just have to add anelastic rope on the front of the pissette, for not let any water to come in. So... Open the elastic rope, pee, close the pissette again with the elastic rope. I do it for 6 years now and works like a charm ! At winter time, you don't have to go deep. The most common fishes in the water, are mostly sea bass and mulet and octopus. And you find them at 0,50 - 4 meters... There's no real danger in those depths. Just be cautious where you are diving and that's all.

1: Dive computer check. Got a GARMIN MK1 a few weeks ago, not dived with it yet 2: Carbon fins I don't have. I use plastic I wanna upgrade, but that will be a good while before I do I think 3: Reel I don't have. I use floatline and a belt line. So gun is attached to floatline and floatline to my belt. Quite genious system 4: Weight West Yes I got one a few weeks ago when I bought computer. Not used it yet. Alos got ankle weights. I need like 11kg of lead so gonna be nice to not have all on belt. 5: Was thinking about it, but i find it easy enough to just go on land or on the boat and fold the pants down and do my buisiness.

Hi Joe, a great and informative video, like all your videos. I'm just getting into spearfishing been doing it a year or so. Have been borrowing a friends old spear wetsuit. But going to invest in a new suit that fits me better. I'm diving south Cornwall so would love to know your thoughts on this...What thickness suit would you recommend for spearfishing through most of the year. 5mm or 7mm.? And is it worth getting a camo colour or is black not a issue? Big thanks
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Reuben. Thanks for checking out the videos. I always opt for a 7mm jacket and 5mm trousers. With 3mm socks and gloves. This seems to be the answer for most of the Devon/Cornwall Spearos year round. You'll need about 6Kg of lead. Camo or black really doesn't matter. Well done on focusing on what matters! A suit that will keep you warm and a mask that is comfortable is the main event to begin with. The rest can come later. Hope you get some nice fish! And stay tuned for some more helpful videos I'll make this winter!

Great advice.... just what I wanted to hear. I really got into spearing after fishing my local spots for years and wanting to take a better look at how the fish move and are using the structures underwater. But I'm hooked now and do both about the same. On a different note, I run a Stand up paddleboard website and KZfaq channel called SUPboarder. If you haven't already SUPing is great for spearfishing. Smaller then a boat and so good at holding gear and fish and you have the ability to move spots up the coast pretty easy too. Inflatable SUPS are great for harder to get places to. Means more gear though🙁. Anyway thanks again and from a fellow KZfaqr keep up the good work. Reuben.... ps have you done a video on your breath up techniques??

Thanks for the tips Joe. Regarding your Epsealon weight vest, how much weight and what type of weights fit in it? Is it easy to ditch if you needed to in an emergency? Cheers.
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 6 жыл бұрын
My weight vest is actually mares, but they'll all take your standard kilo of lead in each compartment. I use 3Kg in mine and 4kg on the weightbelt. Ditch weightbelt in emergency, not weight vest.

Hey Joe, I watched several of your excellent videos today. I've used Beuchat Competition fins for years and like the footpockets. I notice you use Beuchat carbon fins and I think you maybe on your second pair now, going from soft to medium stiffness. I wonder what your stiffness recommendation is now and what you think of the Beuchat carbon fins? FYI I dive from shore and am quite large 6', 90-100kg. BTW I often dive in S. Hams on holiday and stayed in "downtown" Kingsbridge with my family a couple of years ago.
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony sorry about my late reply. I actually find the Beauchat carbons a little on the stiff side for me. I have sold these fins now and have invested in some soft/medium blades with pathos footpockets. If you after some new fins and diving south hams way you should pop in and see Barcley at the spearfishing store in Totnes! Some of the new carbons in are superb
@tonyy6436
@tonyy6436 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoePkSpearfishing Oh, it's in Totnes now? That is more convenient. I visited the old store in Brixham last year, technically closed at the time, they very kindly helped me out. Thanks for the info. Also saw since that Ryan E. damaged his Beuchat carbon fin blades (and lost a carbon fin from your boat!).

Try to put your belt more downwards. You shouldn't wear the belt so high on your waist. In long terms, waist problems will appear to you. Try under the bones you have, on your left and right of your belly and sometimes even lower. It depends on how shallow or deep you want to hunt.
@richchallis9013
@richchallis9013 6 жыл бұрын
What carbon fins are you using Joe? I am looking to upgrade and trying to get some comparison of stiffness between brands. I was looking at the omer carbon stingrays, but then heard they are softer than other brands, so I am unsure now.
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, I wouldn't like to give advice on the exact type of fin, it depends on you and the kind of diving, how deep, and how powerful you are... I think the fotpocket is critical, well fitting, I have pathos, and then the blade, perhaps medium stiffness is best, too soft and you lack power. Sorry the late response.
@richchallis9013
@richchallis9013 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Joe. The omer footpocket fits me well, so I will be sticking with that. I will look into which carbon blade would suit me best. Cheers.

Awesome video mate. Do you recommend soft carbon fins for beginners or medium? Also if I want to start with shallow diving, is a 90cm gun too long? Preferably wouldn't want to buy again so want to get the right gun to start with. Any recommendation appreciated. :)
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Personally I wouldn't go too stiff with the fins, soft suits me but get some other opinions. Definitely start with a 75 gun :)
@kouvanos
@kouvanos 6 жыл бұрын
Dinesh Thirupuvanarajah soft fins and watch a video of "how to swim with carbon fins". You must do it right, in order to get the best of it. The length of the gun... Well.... It depends on how clear the waters are in your area. But a 75 is a "must" in every spearos' gear. I suggest you buy one with a reverse trigger, 2 bands of 14mm and a 115cm shaft with 6,25mm thickness, with shark fins on it.
@dineshthirupuvanarajah6735

Great tips Teo. Thank you for this. I've been looking at both Cressi cherokee 75 as well as the Rob Allen Scorpio 80. However, I've decided to visit a shop locally to talk to them as compared to buying it online. So will definitely ask them about the reverse trigger and the 2 bands. Once again thank you for this. :)
@kouvanos
@kouvanos 6 жыл бұрын
Dinesh Thirupuvanarajah They will probably suggest you with a single 17,5 band. I've tested both options and the Two 14mm works better on this shaft and this length of a gun. And the best thing is that you can load them effortless

If you don’t mind keep like this but if you’re a sensitive hearted, later you may blame yourself. Mine is a neighborly comment only.

denmyos very wise to get comfortable with equalising, always surface and take your time. 10m is a pretty good depth for a lot of stuff, however the pollock certainly tend to be deeper. And 15m is very useful. Unless you're in Cornwall. All the best with your progress. What watch are you using?

Great, once you start going deeper than 10m It can pay to wait for a calm day with great vis and sunshine, dive to 10 and you'll get negatively buoyant, then freefall, focusing on being relaxed. A consistent routine to relax and breathe up too.
