Never force a certain handstyle, learn the fundamentals of some letters you like to combine and the style will just come naturally. Personally I sat every night for hours at a time, just repeating the alphabet over and over again. Naturally, I started getting bored so automatically I just started doing small changes in the letters while keeping the basic fundamentals, and I just got better with time.

what do i do if one just came naturally? like i was learning about basics and then i was picking out things i had liked and thought "what if i did this instead?" and then did that and fell in LOVE with it. should i practice the fundamental lettering or the lettering im actually gonna be doing? (I know im late, sorry)
@Arismory

1.Keep your bottom letters on the base line as a beginner.You don't go off base until you get the flow right. 2.Make sure all your letters are close together by the same amount.Negative space manegnent is important for letter structure.Only overlap if you know what your doing. 3.Make all your letters readable! That's the most important thing. Style comes later on with practice along with the 3 basic rules ✅'d out.Extensions come once you get the style down with practice.

I filled a blackbook with just practice for each letter and countless designs for throws only to realize the sickest one I could come up with was the simplest out of them all. But I’ll try to send you a pic for a critique hopefully you get the chance to see it and tbh say whatever because it’ll only help out 🤘🏽

They do Mach 10 speed tags, they don’t listen to my advice, and they don’t understand it at all. And since they have an outlet for materials which is me, I take them to some chill spots and stuff and literally one of them bombed the chill spot...they came in with a full can of black, stock tip. @sageseventh
@sageseventh 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on their level. If they are dedicated to put in that much work to master multiple styles, all power to them. From my experience, I would say to anyone starting or intermediate. master your style of lettering first then master characters. Then explore new lettering. If you’re a bomber, focus on tags first, then throw ups then piece throw ups. Challenge & Explore yourself, I had no idea I was good at art till I started branching off from wild style pieces.

For me, my hand got much better as soon as I realized that my letters weren't structured evenly. When I first started I was crazy sloppy, but as soon as I realized that when I wrote letters like - A's E's G's or F's - the horizontal lines that cross these letters weren't even/ crossing at the same level. As soon as I fixed this, my handstyle took off. Also, keep your letters the same hight/width because this helps keep tags balanced. If you're wondering why your tag is sloppy, or just plain ugly, trying paying attention to the little SIMPLE details that usually go unnoticed. - radRAKSter
@swine13
@swine13 4 жыл бұрын
Not an attack on you personally, since youve figured it out, but tbh the fact that anyone even feels the need to explain this specific point makes me want to lower my face into a blender. Cause imagine how many people - pretty much every day - come online like "plz give me crits how 2 improve style?" - they are happy to bombard you with 3hrs of questions but they wont listen to the answers for them, and the whole time theyre missing all the crucial, fundamental stuff like this. And its because they think they are better than the basics! Its just so naive. Why does _no one_ ever stop, take a step back and think "maybe theres more to this that im not seeing"? Is it to do with how they teach you things in school these days? Im genuinely curious about where that attitude comes from, and why its so overwhelmingly prevalent in young people who show an interest in graffiti and letters. Its annoying cause it shows a complete lack of humility, something that's always been important if you didnt wanna go getting into beef all over the place. The internet has created a landscape where you can apparently run your mouth all day and nothing really ever comes of it. Long story short: Absolute base level toys wanting advice on extensions and "style" etc is like a 3 year old asking to do your taxes for the financial year. Even if you gave them the info and tools they need, they wouldn't know the first thing about how to use it and when you checked up on them in an hour, all your valuable stuff will be covered in wet patches of shit and the baby has produced nothing of value.
@irishpolish80

@@swine13 Hahahaha your absolutely right! The whole idea behind my comment was to hopefully get these toys to stop missing the obvious, and extremely crucial, elements that keep their hands looking like garbage. I know it takes some time to learn but one of the biggest mistakes I see is an inadequate attempt at making the letters uniform. I think having a cohesive flow even if basic should come before trying to add to much style. Master each step and work your way up never stop trying to progress. Handstyles will expose you for not knowing the basics.

from my years of experience teaching i have learned that if this is a question you are asking then you shouldnt have any style in any of the tags you do as you likely need to learn the basics. In short, yes you can swap styles but keep it simple and do basic print font to learn the basics otherwise all of that style will fail 100% of the time

Until you get good enough to go out and not play yourself in public, try keeping all of your letters pretty simple and only adding style to one of your letters, the 1st or the last. Then go from there. This is a good way to practice. It helped me a lot when I was just starting. I'm from philly, here it's all about your hand. In philly the most respected writers have at least 4 basic hands: tall hand, wicket, (as seen in this video by karma) stiff hand, and lower case. Practice and Don't play yourself.

When I do my tag I just write my name as if writting it normal, just print font, I have one that it's More stylezed, but I have practized it a lot. I do rush sometimes because you know, the thing that you are tagging may move or you may have to stay low because you know. I do see tags in places where I tend to rush, and they are tags that you see people took Time to do it, but maybe too much because they messed up everything with too much style. If I have time I preffer to do some Street art, and just tag it down. But I feel you, everyone are just into 20mm or 15mm nibs, and when they find something small to hit, they just mess it, that's why I preffer something like 8mm

And IMO thats completely fine. Youre right - its not always as simple as it sounds to walk up to a wall and get it right, and no one can really hate on people who are smart enough to get away except the cops. There's even IG pages devoted to paying respects to flicks of unfinished panels. I dont mind it at all, imo he has a normal voice... anyway you can always mute it and turn on closed captions if its really that bad for you.

@@helthlopez8201 ok if you're willing I'd like to have a legit discussion about this like a friendly debate just you can know I'm not trying to belittle and you can express your points freely. If You feel graffiti has no rules then can you explain that to me? If I do apexe's tag but with snoopy inconsistent lines, I misspell the name, letters all over the place with inconsistent sizes and I even make the R look more like a K or B is that ok, does that still say apex and is mine better than his or is he better? Also does graffiti not use line, shape, form, value, space, color, texture, all the elements of art ( the laws of art)

I disagree with you. Tag is your own expression. Even if there is too much style it is your own style. Nobody Can do like you do. Don't have to be perfect. Just must be your's. Just like people are different tags have to be different. You don't have to like everyone. EVEN UGLY TAG IS BETTER THAN NO TAG! . Keep tagging.

What? No. 1000x no. If youre talking about actual illegal graff - an ugly tag is NOT better than no tag. Dont be so self-important to think people want to see your trashy scribbles on every surface - its toy tags like that that gives graff the worst of its bad reputation, and is also the hardest shit to defend when people ask why anyone would do graffiti. You can defend murals, pieces, throws and even most good tags on the fact they have a real artistic merit. But this "fuck it - do whatever, wherever" kind of mentality is literally just destruction of property, and feel free to try to argue against society that there is some greater value in the 12ft outline of a penis you drew on some small business owner's fence... see how you get on. You can post all about how well that goes right here, when youre done. 👍 To add to that, destruction of property on its own is literally only defensible if you live in an area of significant social oppression (think black people in the ghetto over the last 50yrs) and when its a clear and obvious way of fighting against the established order for your own rights. 98% of people getting into it these days are not living in that kind of place, they're privileged rich kids from coastal US and Canada who frankly have everything they could want, so for them to destroy stuff is just selfish and ruins the image of all the people that had real reasons for doing this shit. TLDR: there are reasons you dont put crap on walls. Get good before you get up or expect to get crossed and possibly dropped, depending where you live.
